## The short verdict

Yes, especially between May and October, and if you want an easy first city in North America. Night buses fill the gap after the metro, central hostels have women-only rooms and the queer Village is two stops from downtown. The catch is a long, hard winter and a bill that creeps up because many prices are shown before tax.

- Best season: May–Jun
- Daily budget for one: 95–250 CAD (mid 150)

From London or Dublin, Montréal is the easiest way into North America on your own. It is not the prettiest city on the continent, but it is legible: four metro lines, night buses from 1am to 5am, an airport bus that never stops and hostels with women-only rooms. You can switch between French and English and people switch with you, which takes the edge off a first solo trip.

The winter is the honest drawback. The UK Foreign Office warns of frequent storms, freezing rain and blizzards from November to April, and in those months life moves indoors. Go in February for Igloofest or the museums, not for long walks. The second drawback is the bill: BIXI, Igloofest and the hostels all quote prices before tax, so what you pay is always more than the number you read.

On safety, the Italian foreign ministry asks for normal precautions and notes that theft and violent incidents, including with firearms, are rising in Canada's big cities. Neither the Italian nor the British advice names a Montréal neighbourhood to avoid. Keep your bag zipped on the metro and plan your ride home, and that covers most of it.

For New Yorkers the comparison is simpler. The metro is smaller and calmer than the subway, a 24-hour pass costs CAD 11.25, around 8 US dollars, and the queer Village is a ten-minute ride from downtown.

## Who it's for

- First-time solo travellers in North America who want transport that works late
- Women travelling alone who want women-only rooms in a central hostel
- LGBTQ+ travellers looking for a proper queer neighbourhood reachable by metro
- Anyone who likes outdoor festivals between May and October

## Who it's not for

- People who hate the cold and can only travel from December to March
- Very tight budgets that do not want to factor in sales tax
- Anyone after wilderness on the doorstep without hiring a car

## Where to stay alone

### Downtown (Centre-ville)

- Pro: Central, a short walk to the Museum of Fine Arts and the Lachine Canal path. Hostels here run a café, a bar and weekly activities.
- Con: Busier and less neighbourly, and the office streets empty out in the evening.
- At night: Main streets are lit and busy. After 1am you are on the 300-series night buses or a taxi.
- Price band: mid
- Place to stay: Saintlo Montréal, 1030 rue Mackay, 4- or 6-bed rooms either mixed or women-only, breakfast included, dorms from EUR 23.32 (Hostelworld list price, October 2026)

### Latin Quarter and the Village

- Pro: Berri-UQAM metro is five minutes from M Montreal, the Village is next door and the Quartier des spectacles theatres are walkable.
- Con: Loud late at weekends, and some streets around the station are scruffy.
- At night: Plenty of people out until 3am on the bar streets. Walk back on the main roads, not the empty side streets.
- Price band: low
- Place to stay: M Montreal, 1245 rue Saint-André, 4- to 14-bed dorms including female dorms, bar open 8pm to 3am, dorms from EUR 19.31 (Hostelworld list price, October 2026)

### Plateau-Mont-Royal and Mile End

- Pro: The nicest area to wander on foot or by bike, with cafés, bookshops and bagel bakeries open almost round the clock.
- Con: Further from the old town, and the outdoor staircases on the houses get icy in winter.
- At night: Quiet and residential. Commercial streets like avenue du Mont-Royal stay lively late.
- Price band: mid
- Place to stay: Auberge du Plateau, 185 rue Sherbrooke Est, five minutes' walk from Sherbrooke metro, breakfast included, dorms from EUR 24.30 (Hostelworld list price, October 2026)

### Old Montréal (Vieux-Montréal)

- Pro: The old port district, home to Igloofest in winter and riverside walks in summer.
- Con: Touristy and pricier for food, and almost deserted on off-season evenings.
- At night: Outside events the streets empty early. If you stay here, take a taxi or walk back with others after midnight.
- Price band: high
- Place to stay: The Alternative Hostel of Old Montreal, dorms from EUR 23.31 (Hostelworld list price, October 2026)

## How to meet people

- **Free activities at Saintlo**: The hostel runs free pub crawls and bike tours, and its breakfast café turns into a bar in the evening. Booking a bed there is the low-effort way to have company on night one. (1030 rue Mackay, downtown; Free for guests)
- **Nights at the M Bar**: M Montreal's bar has a different activity every night, from karaoke, live music and comedy to games, pasta nights and Latin dance lessons. At midnight it is usually still full. (Every night, 8pm-3am; 1245 rue Saint-André, Latin Quarter)
- **Piknic Électronik**: Outdoor electronic music parties at Parc Jean-Drapeau. The 2026 season ran from 17 May to 18 October; check the site for 2027 dates. (May to October; Parc Jean-Drapeau)
- **Igloofest**: The winter version, outdoors in Old Montréal over four weekends between 14 January and 6 February 2027. Dancing in a parka makes small talk with strangers easier than you would think. (January-February, weekends; Old Montréal; From CAD 49 plus tax)

## Things to do alone

- **Montreal Museum of Fine Arts**: The collection costs CAD 30 at the online rate and is free for anyone aged 25 and under. From 26 September 2026 to 14 February 2027, Wednesday evenings (5pm-9pm) open only the Chiharu Shiota exhibition. (Downtown; CAD 30)
- **Jardins de lumière at the Botanical Garden**: The lantern trail at the Jardin botanique runs from 3 September to 1 November 2026. A slow evening that asks nothing of you socially. (3 September-1 November 2026)
- **Getting around by BIXI**: A one-way pass is CAD 1.60 to unlock plus 21 cents a minute, or 36 cents on an e-bike. The seasonal membership runs from 15 April to 15 November. (CAD 1.60 + CAD 0.21/min)
- **Jean-Talon Market**: One of the biggest markets in North America, open all year. Alongside the growers and cheesemongers there are counters where you can eat standing up. (Mon-Sat 8am-6pm, Sun 8am-5pm; 7070 avenue Henri-Julien, Jean-Talon metro)
- **A show at Cabaret Mado**: The Village cabaret has something on most nights, from improv to bingo, and sitting at the bar alone is perfectly normal. (1115 rue Sainte-Catherine Est)

## Eating alone

- **St-Viateur Bagel**: The Mile End bakery is open every day from 6am to midnight. You order at the counter and eat as you walk. (263 rue Saint-Viateur Ouest, Mile End)
- **Schwartz's**: Smoked meat since 1928 on boulevard Saint-Laurent. Tables are tight and often shared, so a party of one gets seated fast. (3895 boulevard Saint-Laurent, Plateau)
- **Poutine at La Banquise**: Open 24 hours with more than 28 kinds of poutine. It is where people end up at 4am after the Village. (Plateau-Mont-Royal)
- **Lunch at Jean-Talon Market**: Market counters and ready-food stalls are the easiest solo lunch. Numbeo users put a meal at an inexpensive restaurant at about CAD 26.50, roughly 14 pounds; the market can come in under that. (Little Italy; Around CAD 26.50 (Numbeo))

## At night

- Going out: The Village along rue Sainte-Catherine Est for queer bars and cabaret, the Latin Quarter for student bars, the Plateau for sitting down with a drink. Many places, including the M Bar and Unity, close at 3am.
- Getting back: From 1am to 5am the 300-series night buses cover most of the island, every 4 to 45 minutes depending on the area. From 7:30pm to 5:30am anyone travelling alone can ask to be dropped between stops, telling the driver one stop ahead. The 747 airport bus runs all night.
- Avoid: Downtown office streets after midnight, which are empty rather than dangerous, and unlit parks. In winter, the real hazard on the walk home is ice.

## Safety

### General

The FCDO advises against leaving bags unattended, keeping passport and valuables somewhere safe and carrying a copy of your passport for ID. The Italian foreign ministry adds that violent incidents, some involving firearms, and petty crime are increasing in Canada's large cities. Neither source flags a specific Montréal area to avoid.

### Women

The STM's Between Stops service runs from 7:30pm to 5:30am all year and lets anyone travelling alone get off between two stops. It does not apply on shuttles, express buses or the Pie-IX BRT. Unity, one of the main Village clubs, has a stated zero-tolerance policy on harassment.

### LGBTQ+

Same-sex couples have been able to marry anywhere in Canada since 2005, and Quebec was the first Canadian jurisdiction to add sexual orientation to its human rights charter, in 1977. Interligne runs a 24/7 helpline for LGBTQ+ people.

### Trans people

Since 2017 federal law has protected gender identity and gender expression from discrimination, hate propaganda and hate crimes. Canadian passports offer an X marker. Advice on airport screening and matching names on tickets and documents should be reviewed by a trans editor before publication.

### At night

Night buses cover almost the whole island. Walk back on main roads and allow for ice in winter.

### Common scams

The FCDO warns about unofficial websites that charge to submit eTA applications. Apply only on the Government of Canada site, where the eTA costs CAD 7.

### Emergency numbers

- Police, ambulance, fire: 911
- FCDO in London (24 hours, for friends and family): +44 20 7008 5000

- **Bar Le Cocktail**: Village bar with karaoke and shows; tickets via Lepointdevente. (1669 rue Sainte-Catherine Est)

- **Interligne**: Help and information line for LGBTQ+ people and those close to them, 24 hours a day. https://interligne.co/en/

## Dating

- App: Tinder, Bumble, Hinge, Grindr
- Norms: The city runs on French and English, and a bilingual profile opens more conversations. A typical first date is a coffee or a beer in a neighbourhood bar.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is Montréal safe at night for a woman on her own?

Neither the UK Foreign Office nor the Italian foreign ministry flags any Montréal neighbourhood to avoid, though the Italian advice notes that theft and violent incidents are rising in Canada's big cities. On STM buses from 7:30pm to 5:30am you can ask the driver to let you off between two stops, closer to where you are staying.

### How much does a day in Montréal cost for one person?

A dorm bed, two cheap meals and a 24-hour transit pass come to about CAD 95-100, roughly 51-53 pounds or 68-71 US dollars at late-October 2026 rates. Add a mid-range dinner and a museum and you are nearer CAD 150.

### How do I meet people in Montréal when travelling solo?

Start with the hostels. Saintlo runs free pub crawls and bike tours, and the bar at M Montreal has something on every night until 3am, from karaoke to Latin dance lessons. In summer there is Piknic Électronik at Parc Jean-Drapeau; in January and February, Igloofest in the Old Port.

### Is Montréal good for LGBTQ+ travellers?

Yes. Same-sex marriage has been legal across Canada since 2005, and federal law has protected gender identity and expression since 2017. The scene is concentrated in the Village on rue Sainte-Catherine Est, and Fierté Montréal drew more than a million participants in 2026.

### When is the best time to go?

May to October, when the city lives outdoors. The FCDO notes frequent winter storms from November to April, and summer wildfire smoke can affect air quality. If you go in winter, plan around Igloofest, 14 January to 6 February 2027.

### How do I get from the airport to downtown late at night?

The 747 bus runs between Montréal-Trudeau and downtown 24 hours a day. The fare is CAD 11.25 and works as a 24-hour pass on buses and the metro in zone A. Night routes 356 and 378 also serve the airport.

### Where should a solo woman stay?

Downtown or the Latin Quarter. Saintlo on rue Mackay lets you choose between mixed and women-only rooms, and M Montreal, five minutes from Berri-UQAM metro, lists female dorms among its rooms.
