## The short verdict

It depends on where you sleep and how you get around. In Roma, Condesa, the Centro and Coyoacán, hostels run something most nights and meeting people is easy. The real risks are unlicensed taxis, express kidnappings and spiked drinks, all spelled out by the FCDO. It works well for people who stick to app cabs at night, far less for those who improvise.

- Best season: Nov–Apr
- Daily budget for one: 700–2500 MXN (mid 1300)

Mexico City is one of the easiest cities in the Americas to make friends in, and one of the strictest about the basics. Both are true at once. Hostels in the Centro, Roma and Condesa run something almost every day, from lucha libre nights to boat trips at Xochimilco, and an average dorm bed costs about 15 euros, under 13 pounds. What matters most is not where you eat dinner but how you get home afterwards.

The official advice is detailed and worth reading as written. The FCDO reports robberies and assaults by unlicensed taxi drivers in the city, short opportunistic kidnappings in which victims are forced to empty accounts at ATMs, and robberies after drinks were spiked. It also notes protests against gentrification in central and tourist areas since July 2025. Italy's foreign ministry adds theft in crowded places such as the metro, bus terminals and markets, and names Tepito and Iztapalapa as areas to avoid. None of this is a reason to skip the city. It is a reason to book every night-time ride through an app.

For American readers, the US advisory as summarised by the media puts Mexico City at Level 2, the same level as the country overall, while several western and northern states sit at Level 4. For context, INEGI's June 2026 urban survey found 59.8 per cent of adults in Mexican cities feel unsafe where they live, but in the Benito Juárez borough (Del Valle, Nápoles) the figure falls to 17.4. Neighbourhood choice really does change the trip.

The city is high up, and the Italian advice urges caution for anyone with heart or breathing problems, also because of pollution. Take the first two days slowly.

## Who it's for

- Solo travellers who want instant company through hostel activities
- Museum and street-food people who explore on foot by day
- Budget travellers, given dorm prices
- Anyone happy to use app cabs and authorised taxis without exception

## Who it's not for

- People who want to walk between neighbourhoods alone late at night
- Travellers with serious heart or respiratory conditions who cannot manage altitude and smog
- Anyone looking for a quiet city

## Where to stay alone

### Roma (Norte and Sur)

- Pro: Leafy streets full of taco spots and mezcal bars, small hostels that are social without being party places.
- Con: Rising prices, and since July 2025 the FCDO has reported anti-gentrification protests in central and tourist areas.
- At night: Lively late on the main streets. Use an app even for short hops between neighbourhoods.
- Price band: mid
- Place to stay: Casa Columpio, Nayarit 86, Roma Sur, rooftop terrace and free city tour, dorms from EUR 12.08 (Hostelworld list price, October 2026)

### Condesa

- Pro: Parks and pedestrian boulevards with bars close by. Hostels focus on day and evening activities rather than partying.
- Con: Pricier than the Centro or Roma for food and drink, and busy with visitors.
- At night: Bar streets stay full until late. Keep your drink in hand; the FCDO reports robberies after spiking.
- Price band: mid
- Place to stay: Kuxan Condesa, avenida Álvaro Obregón 290, morning yoga, salsa nights, lucha libre and food tours, dorms from EUR 13.53 (Hostelworld list price, October 2026)

### Centro Histórico

- Pro: The cheapest and most sociable hostels, a few blocks from the Zócalo and Templo Mayor. Walkable by day.
- Con: Some streets empty out at night, and Tepito, which the Italian advice says to avoid, lies north of the centre.
- At night: Stick to lit pedestrian streets and take an app cab back after dinner rather than walking north.
- Price band: low
- Place to stay: Viajero CDMX Centro Hostel, San Ildefonso 38, on a pedestrian street, dorms from EUR 10.53 (Hostelworld list price, October 2026)
- Place to stay: Massiosare El Hostel, Revillagigedo 47, women-only 4-bed dorm with its own bathroom, dorms from EUR 13.37 (Hostelworld list price, October 2026)

### Coyoacán

- Pro: Calmer and residential, a few minutes' walk from the Frida Kahlo Museum. Good if sleep matters.
- Con: Far from the Centro and from Roma and Condesa nightlife, so every evening out means a ride.
- At night: Quiet. The risk is the trip back from the centre, which should be by app.
- Price band: low
- Place to stay: Hostal Cuija Coyoacán, Berlín 268, next to the Casa Azul, dorms from EUR 13.53 (Hostelworld list price, October 2026)

## How to meet people

- **Activities at Viajero CDMX Centro**: A daily calendar with lucha libre tours, Xochimilco trips, salsa lessons and karaoke, plus mezcal tastings, bike tours and Saturday theme nights. The quickest way to never head out alone in the evening. (San Ildefonso 38, Centro)
- **Tuesday lucha and Spanish at Massiosare**: The hostel goes to lucha libre as a group on Tuesdays, holds welcome hangouts on weekdays and Sunday evenings, and runs Spanish lessons. Reviewers describe it as not a party hostel, with people up for doing things. (Tuesdays for lucha; Revillagigedo 47, Centro)
- **Yoga, salsa and food tours at Kuxan Condesa**: Day and night activities, from morning yoga to salsa, with a happy hour that works as the meeting point. (Álvaro Obregón 290, Condesa)
- **Lucha libre at Arena México**: CMLL stages lucha libre on Tuesdays and Fridays at Arena México. Going with a hostel group and coming back by app is the relaxed way to do it. (Tuesdays 7:30pm, Fridays; Arena México)

## Things to do alone

- **Frida Kahlo Museum (Casa Azul)**: Closed Mondays; open Tuesday to Sunday 10am-6pm, from 11am on Wednesdays, with a Thursday Blue Night from 5:15pm to 9pm. The 320-peso ticket, about 13 pounds, includes entry to the Anahuacalli. Buy only through the official channel. (Londres 247, Coyoacán; MXN 320)
- **Cycling with Ecobici**: A one-day pass is 134 pesos for unlimited 45-minute rides; three days 263, seven days 441. The pleasant way to get between Roma and Condesa by day. (MXN 134 per day)
- **A night of lucha libre**: At Arena México on Tuesdays and Fridays, with tickets from the box office or the official channels CMLL lists.
- **Xochimilco by boat, in a group**: The canals are seen by boat, and the trip is better with company. Viajero CDMX Centro runs it as a hostel activity.
- **A hostel mezcal tasting**: Viajero CDMX Centro's mezcal tastings let you try several without having to pick a bar on your own.

## Eating alone

- **Tacos at Taquería Orinoco**: Trompo or chicharrón tacos, from a chain with branches in Mexico City and Monterrey. Quick food where nobody notices you are alone. (Avenida Álvaro Obregón 100, Roma Norte)
- **Lunch at a fonda or cheap restaurant**: Numbeo users put a meal at an inexpensive restaurant at about 200 pesos, around 8 pounds or 11 dollars. (About MXN 200 (Numbeo))
- **Kuxan Condesa's food tour**: If eating street food alone feels awkward at first, the hostel food tour fixes it. Taste in a group, then go back alone to the places you liked. (Condesa)

## At night

- Going out: Roma and Condesa for bars and mezcal, the Centro for hostel-run nights, Arena México for Tuesday and Friday lucha.
- Getting back: Sitio taxis from authorised ranks, cabs ordered by your hotel or restaurant, or Uber, which the Italian advice considers generally safer than street taxis. Do not walk between neighbourhoods after dinner.
- Avoid: Tepito and Iztapalapa, isolated ATMs at night given express kidnappings, and unattended drinks. The FCDO also reports deaths from methanol-tainted alcohol in Mexico.

## Safety

### General

The FCDO says crime is a risk to foreign nationals particularly in major cities, that express kidnappings happen mainly in cities, and that anti-gentrification protests have taken place in central and tourist areas since July 2025. Italy's foreign ministry reports theft and robbery in crowded places and names Tepito, Iztapalapa and, in the wider metro area, Ecatepec, Naucalpan and Nezahualcóyotl as areas to avoid. The US advisory, as reported by the media, places Mexico City at Level 2 of 4.

### Women

According to the FCDO, women travelling alone on public transport have been harassed, robbed and sexually assaulted, and sexual offences have been reported near hotels in tourist areas, especially after dark. In practice: app cabs at night, a women-only dorm if possible, and your drink always in sight.

### LGBTQ+

The FCDO says same-sex relations are generally tolerated rather than accepted and public affection may be frowned on. Queer life is visible in the city, but many people choose discretion outside venues.

### Trans people

Legal gender recognition rules vary by state; check the ILGA World Database. We found no current official source on airport screening for trans travellers, so this section needs review by a trans editor before publication.

### At night

The main night-time risk is the journey, not the venue. Use apps or authorised taxis, and withdraw cash by day inside banks or malls.

### Common scams

Italy's foreign ministry warns about so-called virtual kidnappings by phone, where callers threaten you or claim to hold a relative; it advises not complying and contacting the police and your embassy. The FCDO warns about spiked drinks and tainted alcohol.

### Emergency numbers

- Emergencies (ambulance, fire, police): 911
- Mexico City Tourist Police: +52 55 5207 4155
- Tourist Police, WhatsApp: +52 55 4891 1166
- LOCATEL public information line (English-speaking staff): 55 5658 1111

### Hospitals

- Médica Sur, Puente de Piedra 150, Toriello Guerra, emergencies 800 999 8743
- Centro Médico ABC, Observatorio campus, Sur 136 No. 116, +52 55 5230 8000

## LGBTQ+

- Same-sex relationships are legal
- Marriage: legal by Supreme Court ruling (2015)
- Legal gender recognition: varies by state; self-ID in many
- Spartacus Gay Travel Index 2026: #32
- Checked on 2026-11-02

Same-sex marriage is legal across Mexico; for state-by-state detail the reference is the ILGA World Database. Social attitudes lag behind the law, and the FCDO says so plainly. We have not yet verified current venues or Pride dates and have left them out until we can.

## Dating

- App: Tinder, Bumble, Grindr, Hinge
- Norms: First dates are often dinner or drinks in Roma or Condesa, and later in the evening than in the UK.
- Safety: The FCDO reports robberies and assaults after drinks were spiked. Meet somewhere public, go home in your own app cab rather than with someone you just met, and tell someone where you are.

## Cost for one

| Tier | Per day (MXN) |
| --- | --- |
| Low | 700 |
| Mid | 1300 |
| High | 2500 |

Checked 27 October 2026. Low: a dorm bed (average EUR 15 on Hostelworld, about 310 pesos at the ECB rate of 20.78), two inexpensive meals at 200 pesos each according to Numbeo users, and a few transit rides. Mid adds a mid-range dinner (900 pesos for two on Numbeo, so 450 each) and a museum like the Casa Azul (320). High is an editorial estimate with a private room and app cabs. At Banxico's FIX rate of 18.65 pesos to the dollar, 700 pesos is about USD 38; at ECB rates it is about GBP 28.

## Recurring events

- **Day of the Dead (Día de Muertos)** (Culture; October, November): The festivity for the dead, from late October to early November, on UNESCO's intangible heritage list since 2008. https://ich.unesco.org/en/RL/indigenous-festivity-dedicated-to-the-dead-00054

## Getting around

- From the airport, also at night: At the airport the FCDO says to use only authorised pre-paid taxis, which AICM lists among its ground transport options. Ignore offers of rides in the arrivals hall.
- In town: The metro and Metrobús cover the city, but the Italian advice flags theft in crowded places like the metro and urges maximum caution on public transport. By day, Ecobici at 134 pesos a day works well in the central neighbourhoods. For earthquakes, the FCDO points to the 911 CDMX app, which can give up to 60 seconds' warning.
- App: Uber, Ecobici, 911 CDMX
