## The short verdict

Yes, if your budget can take it: the subway runs 24/7, volunteer greeters will show you around for free, and New York State tops Spartacus's state-by-state index. The problem is price. A dorm bed averages about $43 a night and a cheap meal runs $28, so travelers on a tight budget need to plan where every dollar goes.

- Best season: May–Jun
- Daily budget for one: 110–340 USD (mid 170)

New York is a city where being on your own is the default setting. Nobody notices if you eat at the counter, walk into a museum alone or ride the subway at 3am, because the subway really does run 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. For a solo traveler that's a huge advantage: the night ends when you decide, not when the last train leaves.

The catch is the check. Numbeo users put a cheap meal at $28 and a beer at $8, and Hostelworld's dorm beds start at an average of about $43. You can do the city for around $110 a day, but that means market food and a lot of walking. The single supplement here isn't a percentage; it's the difference between a pod the size of a closet and a real room.

The official safety advice is measured. The UK Foreign Office says violent crime rarely touches tourists but advises against walking alone through empty areas at night. Italy's foreign ministry notes a nationwide rise in violent crime and, in New York specifically, counterfeit electronics in the small shops around Times Square.

For LGBTQ+ travelers New York is the exception in a divided country: the state ranks first in Spartacus's state-by-state index, while the US as a whole sits 47th. Trans travelers should still read the federal rules on documents carefully, because they apply here too.

Flying in from London or Dublin, you'll need an approved ESTA before you board. Your pound goes about as far as $1.33 at late-October rates, which makes that $28 meal roughly £21.

- Budgets under $100 a day that won't compromise

## Safety

### General

The UK Foreign Office says violent and gun crime rarely affect tourists; Italy's foreign ministry reports a rise in violent crime nationwide and advises caution in some big-city areas in the evening. The US ranks 134th of 163 in the 2026 Global Peace Index.

### Women

On the subway, ride near the middle of the train, where the conductor usually is, and keep your belongings in sight. In an emergency: an MTA employee, a police officer, a Help Point intercom or 911.

### LGBTQ+

New York State ranks first of 51 in Spartacus's 2026 US index. Same-sex marriage has been legal nationwide since 2015.

### Trans people

A January 20, 2025 executive order directs that passports, visas and Global Entry cards show sex as defined at birth; on November 6, 2025 the Supreme Court let the passport policy take effect while the case continues. For travelers on a foreign passport, the UK Foreign Office says anyone whose passport sex differs from their sex recorded at birth should contact the US Embassy. A change of sex on your documents means a new ESTA. This section needs review by a trans person.

### At night

The overnight subway works; pick the middle car and check late-night service changes on the MTA site.

### Common scams

Counterfeit electronics in Times Square shops. Rentals paid upfront by bank transfer that turn out not to exist: Italy's foreign ministry says pay by credit card only. Unlicensed airport rides.

### Emergency numbers

- Emergency (police, ambulance, fire): 911

### Hospitals

- The Mount Sinai Hospital, 1 Gustave L. Levy Place (212-241-6500), open 24 hours
- NYU Langone, Ronald O. Perelman Center for Emergency Services, 570 First Avenue (212-263-5550)

## LGBTQ+

- Same-sex relationships are legal
- Marriage: legal nationwide since 2015
- Legal gender recognition: varies by state; federal IDs use sex at birth
- Spartacus Gay Travel Index 2026: #47
- Checked on 2026-11-02

The US is 47th in the 2026 Spartacus Gay Travel Index, but Spartacus also publishes a state-by-state index, and New York tops it with 16 points, ahead of California, Nevada and Washington. In the city, the history is in Greenwich Village: the Stonewall Inn, the national monument across the street, and the first Pride March, organized a year after the 1969 uprising.

Areas: West Village, Greenwich Village, Chelsea

- **The Stonewall Inn**: The bar of the 1969 uprising, with piano bar on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, karaoke on Fridays and a Sunday drag show. 21+ with physical ID. (Mon-Fri 2pm-4am, Sat-Sun 1pm-4am; 53 Christopher St) https://thestonewallinnnyc.com/
- **Henrietta Hudson**: A queer bar built by lesbians, as it describes itself. (Wed-Sun 6pm-2am; 438 Hudson St) https://www.henriettahudson.com/
- **Cubbyhole**: Neighborhood bar open since 1994, with an events calendar on its site. (Mon-Thu 4pm-2am, Fri 4pm-4am, Sat 2pm-4am, Sun 2pm-2am; 281 W 12th St) https://www.cubbyholebar.com/

- **The LGBT Community Center** https://gaycenter.org/
- **Heritage of Pride**: The nonprofit that produces New York City's official Pride events. https://www.nycpride.org/about

## Dating

- App: Tinder, Bumble, Hinge, Grindr
- Norms: We don't have a reliable source on local dating habits. One practical point: bars card at 21 and want physical ID, so bring the real thing, not a photo on your phone.
- Safety: Meet somewhere public, get home on the 24/7 subway or in a licensed cab. Same-sex relationships are legal and marriage equality applies nationwide.
