## The short verdict

Yes, especially if eating alone is what worries you: in Japan the counter seat is the norm and nobody looks twice. It ranks 10th of 163 in the 2026 Global Peace Index and the trains run to the minute. Two caveats: you'll have to make the effort to meet people, and same-sex couples get no national legal recognition.

- Best season: –
- Daily budget for one: 8000–24000 JPY (mid 12000)

Japan is the easiest country on earth for anyone who dreads walking into a restaurant alone. Counter seats, ramen booths, ticket machines at the door: the whole system is built for one person at a time, and a solo dinner surprises nobody. Tenth place in the 2026 Global Peace Index matches what you see on the street, which is order and very little crime.

The flip side is distance. English is thin outside the big cities, and hostel life is cooler than in Europe or Southeast Asia. If you're going to meet people you'll have to go and find them: guided walks, six-seat bars, public baths where at least you share the hot water.

Some risks don't show up in the rankings. Japan is a major earthquake zone, typhoons come between June and October, and summer heat in Tokyo and the Osaka-Kyoto area has passed 40°C in recent years. Drug laws are zero tolerance, cannabis included, so leave the CBD at home.

For LGBTQ+ travellers Japan is easy to visit and harder to live in: no criminal laws, but no national recognition of same-sex couples. Spartacus ranks it 59th for 2026, against 32nd for the UK, 28th for Ireland and 47th for the US.

Two practical points before you book. UK visitors get a visa on arrival for up to 90 days, with no application in advance. And the departure tax tripled to ¥3,000 (about £14 or $19) on 1 July 2026; it's folded into the ticket price, so you won't pay it at the airport.

## Who it's for

- Anyone who wants to eat alone without feeling watched
- First-timers in Asia who want punctual trains and orderly streets
- Travellers who want to keep to themselves

## Who it's not for

- Anyone hoping to make friends without trying
- Anyone who wilts in humid summer heat
- Budgets calibrated on Southeast Asian prices

## Safety

### General

Tenth of 163 in the 2026 Global Peace Index. Italy's foreign ministry reports occasional scams and robberies in big-city nightlife areas, with overcharging, card fraud and drinks laced with sedatives, plus a rise in bag snatching around Tokyo. High earthquake risk; typhoons from June to October.

### Women

Groping and upskirting happen on commuter trains. Police advise shouting and asking another passenger to alert staff. Sexual assault is rare, but the burden of proof on victims is heavy.

### LGBTQ+

Same-sex relationships are legal; there's no national recognition of same-sex couples.

### Trans people

Since 2023, sterilisation is no longer required for legal gender recognition. Needs review by a trans person.

### Emergency numbers

- Police: 110
- Ambulance and fire: 119
- Japan Visitor Hotline (24 hours): 050-3816-2787
- Japan Helpline (24 hours): 0120-461-997

## LGBTQ+

- Same-sex relationships are legal
- Marriage: not recognised; case at Supreme Court
- Legal gender recognition: court and diagnosis, no sterilisation since 2023
- Spartacus Gay Travel Index 2026: #59
- Checked on 2026-11-02

Same-sex relationships are not a crime. But Japan recognises neither marriage nor civil partnership nationally: the 2026 Spartacus Gay Travel Index gives it zero in that category and ranks it 59th overall with -1. For trans people, on 25 October 2023 the Supreme Court unanimously ruled the sterilisation requirement for legal gender change unconstitutional, and sent the requirement on genital appearance back to a lower court. In cities queer life is visible: in Tokyo it centres on Shinjuku Ni-chome, and Tokyo Pride is held in June.

## Entry and documents

UK visitors can get a visa on arrival for tourism of up to 90 days; the current rules are on the FCDO's Japan entry requirements page (checked 27 October 2026). This is not legal advice.

## Culture and customs

In public baths you bathe naked, in water around 42°C. In bar alleys like Golden Gai, don't smoke or drink in the street, and ask before taking photos. Drug laws are zero tolerance, cannabis included, with severe sentences for tiny amounts. Expect fingerprints and a face photo at immigration.
