## The short verdict

Yes, and it's one of the easiest Asian capitals to handle alone. The UK Foreign Office calls crime in Taiwan extremely low, night markets are built for grazing stall to stall, and hostel beds start at NT$580 (about £13). It works especially well for LGBTQ+ travellers. The catch is the weather: humid heat, and typhoons from May to November.

- Best season: Nov–Apr
- Daily budget for one: 1200–5200 TWD (mid 2600)

Taipei is the Asian capital we'd send you to if you want Asia without the chaos. The metro has no-food, no-drink zones, licensed taxis are yellow with a small red light, and convenience stores stay open around the clock. The UK Foreign Office calls crime in Taiwan extremely low. In the evening the city moves to its night markets, where you eat standing up from one stall to the next and nobody counts the people at your table.

It's also Asia's queer capital, and not as a slogan. Taiwan was the first country in the region to open marriage to same-sex couples, under a law in force since 24 May 2019, and its late-October Pride is, in the FCDO's words, the largest regular LGBT+ event in Asia: around 150,000 people in 2025. In 2026 the parade falls on Saturday 31 October, the day after the 8th Trans March. On the Spartacus index Taiwan is 28th, four places above the UK.

The downsides are practical. From April to October it's hot and humid, and typhoon season runs from May to November; in late October 2026 a typhoon even shut down an LGBTQ+ helpline for two days. The island is seismically active. And restaurants serve dinner between 5pm and 10pm, so if you arrive late you'll often find kitchens closed and end up at a night market or a 24-hour convenience store.

Money is easy to work out from home: at the Bank of Taiwan's late-October rate a pound buys about NT$43 and a dollar about NT$32.5, so a NT$150 night-market meal is around £3.50 or $4.60.

## Who it's for

- First-timers in Asia who want an orderly, easy city
- LGBTQ+ travellers who want a capital where the law is on their side
- Anyone happy to eat standing at a stall at any hour
- Mid-range budgets that want to spend less than in Japan

## Who it's not for

- Anyone who can't cope with humid heat and rain
- Anyone after big club nights every night
- Anyone unwilling to risk a typhoon between May and November

## Where to stay alone

### Datong and Main Station

- Pro: The airport line starts at Taipei Main Station. Well-reviewed hostels are a short walk away, some with breakfast included.

- At night: Busy around the station until late. No area here is flagged by the official sources we checked.
- Price band: low
- Place to stay: Star Hostel Taipei Main Station (4F, No. 50, Huayin St.): shared rooms from NT$580, private from NT$1,400, breakfast included
- Place to stay: Corner Hostel & Cafe (Datong): dorms from €21.59 on Hostelworld, rated 9.0

### Zhongshan

- Pro: The district with the most addresses on the Taiwan Tongzhi Hotline's list of LGBTQ-friendly venues, along Linsen N. Rd. and Xinsheng N. Rd. MacKay Memorial Hospital is here too.
- Con: We haven't verified any hostel here: sleep in Datong and come over by taxi or metro.
- At night: Bars open late on the main roads; get home by licensed taxi or app.
- Price band: mid

### Songshan and Xinyi

- Con: A way from Dadaocheng and Ximending, and no hostel here verified by us.
- At night: The market stays packed until late; get back by taxi or app.
- Price band: mid

## Eating alone

- **Raohe Street Night Market**: About 600 metres of stalls in a line, 95 metres from Songshan station. You eat walking or standing, which is exactly right when you're on your own. (Raohe St., Songshan) https://eng.taiwan.net.tw/m1.aspx?sNo=0002016&id=R177
- **Shilin Night Market**: About 300 metres from Jiantan station. Shilin sausage, giant fried chicken, the big pancake wrapped round a small one, and a food court. (Shilin, Jiantan MRT) https://eng.taiwan.net.tw/m1.aspx?sNo=0002016&id=154
- **24-hour convenience stores**: Most open around the clock, some 7am to 11pm. Your fallback after 10pm, when restaurants have stopped serving dinner.
- **Fox Picnic**: Restaurant listed as LGBTQ-friendly by the Taiwan Tongzhi Hotline. (No. 22, Lane 281, Longjiang Rd., Zhongshan)

## At night

- Going out: Night markets until late, Zhongshan's bars, Taipei 101's observatory until 9pm. Restaurants serve dinner from 5pm to 10pm.
- Getting back: Yellow taxis with the red light on when free, with meters and receipts; or the Taiwan Taxi, Uber, LINE TAXI and yoxi apps, which show a fare estimate. There may be a late-night surcharge. Check the Taipei Metro Go app for the last train.
- Avoid: Anyone offering rides outside recognisable taxis. And any contact with drugs: penalties go as far as the death sentence.

## Safety

### General

The UK Foreign Office says crime in Taiwan is extremely low; Italy's foreign ministry cites sporadic bag snatching and theft from foreigners. The serious risks are natural: the island is highly seismic (in March 2024 a magnitude 7.4 earthquake near Hualien killed 18 people) and typhoons arrive between May and November.

### Women

The official sources we checked carry no warnings specific to women. The free 113 line covers domestic abuse and sexual assault.

### LGBTQ+

Same-sex marriage in force since 2019, discrimination on gender and gender identity illegal. Taiwan is 28th in Spartacus 2026.

### Trans people

Discrimination on the grounds of gender identity is illegal. The Taiwan Tongzhi Hotline has a page of trans-friendly medical resources, and the 8th Taiwan Trans March is on 30 October 2026. Rules for changing Taiwanese documents don't apply to visitors on a foreign passport. Needs review by a trans person.

### At night

Streets around markets and stations stay busy. Use recognisable taxis or apps.

### Common scams

The sources we checked don't flag typical scams. Watch the rules instead: no photographing military installations, and no bringing in animal or plant products.

### Emergency numbers

- Police: 110
- Ambulance and fire: 119
- Emergency with poor signal: 112
- Domestic abuse and sexual assault: 113
- Information for foreigners (English): 0800 024 111

### Hospitals

- MacKay Memorial Hospital, No. 92, Sec. 2, Zhongshan N. Rd., Zhongshan (02-2543-3535)

## LGBTQ+

- Same-sex relationships are legal
- Marriage: legal since 2019
- Legal gender recognition: surgery by rule; courts case by case
- Spartacus Gay Travel Index 2026: #28
- Checked on 2026-11-02

Taiwan is 28th in the 2026 Spartacus Gay Travel Index with a score of 8, and gets 2 points for marriage, like Iceland. Its late-October Pride is, per the FCDO, Asia's largest regular LGBT+ event. Venues are spread out; the Taiwan Tongzhi Hotline's list puts several in Zhongshan. The list is undated, so check hours before you go.

Areas: Zhongshan

- **Scorpio PUB**: Bar for gay men on the Taiwan Tongzhi Hotline list. (1F, No. 110-1, Sec. 1, Xinsheng N. Rd., Zhongshan)
- **Longxing**: Bar for gay men on the Taiwan Tongzhi Hotline list. (2F, No. 132, Linsen N. Rd., Zhongshan)
- **Fox Picnic**: LGBTQ-friendly restaurant. (No. 22, Lane 281, Longjiang Rd., Zhongshan)
- **Tongguang Presbyterian Church**: Church for LGBTQ+ people, on the list of friendly spaces. (7F, No. 65, Guangfu S. Rd., Songshan)

- **Taiwan Tongzhi (LGBTQ+) Hotline Association**: Founded 1998. Phone counselling on 02-2392-1970, Monday and Thursday to Sunday, 7pm to 10pm. https://hotline.org.tw/english
- **Taipei City LGBT+ information site**: Run by the Department of Civil Affairs, covering registration, healthcare, work and an LGBT+ information line. https://lgbt.gov.taipei/

## Dating

- App: Tinder, Bumble, Grindr, Hinge
- Norms: We don't have a reliable source on local dating habits. One practical point: dinner service runs from 5pm to 10pm, so a dinner date starts earlier than it might in London.
- Safety: Meet somewhere public and get home by recognisable taxi or app. Same-sex relationships are legal and same-sex marriage is recognised.
