## The short verdict

Yes, and it's gentler than Bangkok. The old city is walkable, a hostel bed starts under £10, and cooking classes, meditation retreats and elephant sanctuaries put you in a group without trying. The weak spot is the air: during the crop-burning season the smoke haze is real, so anyone with breathing problems should choose the month carefully.

- Best season: Dec–Jan
- Daily budget for one: 800–5000 THB (mid 2200)

Chiang Mai is where Thailand gets easier on your own. The old city inside the moat takes an afternoon to walk, and most of what people come here to do happens in groups: a cooking class at your own station, half a day with rescued elephants, a meditation course at a temple. You arrive alone, and by lunchtime the group has done the introductions for you.

It's cheap. Hostelworld dorms start at about €5, and the best-reviewed ones sit between €10 and €15. Numbeo users put a cheap meal at 75 baht, under two pounds. The Michelin Guide gives 18 places a Bib Gourmand, most in the lowest price band, khao soi included.

The air is the problem nobody puts on the postcard. The FCDO flags seasonal smoke haze in Chiang Mai from farmers burning trees and crops, which aggravates asthma and sinus conditions. It doesn't name the months, so check live readings before you book. Nightlife is also much smaller than Bangkok's, and we haven't verified specific bars yet.

## Who it's for

- People who want to learn something on the trip, from Thai cooking to meditation
- Budget travellers who want a walkable city
- Remote workers after coworking with long hours
- First-timers in Asia who find Bangkok too much

## Who it's not for

- Anyone with asthma or breathing problems travelling in the smoke season
- Beach seekers
- People who want big-city nightlife
- Travellers who won't use shared songthaews or apps to get around

## Where to stay alone

### Old City

- Pro: Everything on foot, a temple on most blocks and a coworking space by Tha Phae Gate. The A1 airport shuttle runs along the moat.
- Con: Lanes inside the moat are narrow and busy, with few pavements.
- At night: Quiet streets after dinner. National precautions apply.
- Price band: low
- Place to stay: Give Me 5 Hostel, inside the old town, dorms from €10.95 (Hostelworld list price)
- Place to stay: The Yard Hostel Chiang Mai, dorms from €14.55 (Hostelworld list price)

### Chang Moi and Tha Phae

- Pro: Just outside the moat, five minutes from Tha Phae Gate. Hostels with something on every night, and the Night Bazaar is on the shuttle route.
- Con: Noisier than the old city, especially near hostel bars.
- At night: Lively late around the hostels.
- Price band: low
- Place to stay: Stamps Backpackers, 1/11 Chaiyapoom Road, pod-style dorms with lockers

### Nimmanhaemin (Nimman)

- Pro: Modern cafés and bars, and the A1 airport shuttle stops here for 40 baht.
- Con: Pricier and further from the temples, so the old city needs a ride.
- At night: The area with the most places open in the evening.
- Price band: mid
- Place to stay: Rimnim Hostel Chiangmai, near Nimman, dorms from €1.52 (Hostelworld list price)

### Suthep and Suan Dok

- Pro: West of the old city, next to Wat Suan Dok, where Monk Chat and meditation retreats are held, and near the university hospital.
- Con: Fewer hostels and little going on in the evening.
- At night: Quiet, with few people about after dinner.
- Price band: low

## How to meet people

- **Thai Farm Cooking School**: Everyone gets their own station, but you cook and eat together. Air-conditioned minivan transfer if you're in the pick-up zone. For same-day or next-day places, call or WhatsApp. (Half day (morning or evening) or full day; 1,200 THB half day, 1,500 THB full day)
- **Elephant Nature Park**: A sanctuary where elephants don't work and aren't ridden. Day programmes start in the morning with hotel pick-up, or from the office on Ratmakka Road. (Pick-up 07:30-08:45 depending on programme; 2,500-6,000 THB)
- **Monk Chat and retreats at Wat Suan Dok**: The Buddhist university based at the temple runs conversations with monks and meditation courses from one to four days, plus half-day sessions. A two-day retreat was on the October 2026 schedule. (Wat Suan Dok, Suthep Road)
- **Nights at Stamps Backpackers**: Something on every night, from hostel-run activities to group outings. Dorms are for sleeping; the socialising happens at the bar. (Chang Moi)
- **Punspace coworking**: Two sites in the old city, one in a converted soda-bottle factory at Wiang Kaew, one by Tha Phae Gate. For remote workers it's the quickest way to have colleagues for a few weeks. (09:00-18:00, 24/7 for members)

## Things to do alone

- **Stamps lantern night**: For Yi Peng the hostel runs an evening with two sky lanterns, a hanging lantern and transport back. The 50-baht discount only applies if you book at reception. (24-25 November 2026; 1,300 THB)
- **Half a day with elephants**: Elephant Nature Park's shortest programme, morning or afternoon. Children aged 3 to 11 pay half. (2,500 THB (about £56))
- **Meditation retreat**: One to four days at Wat Suan Dok. The calendar changes monthly, so email the organisers before you plan around it.
- **Farm cooking class**: Morning or evening half days, or a full day. Each person has a cooking station. (1,200-1,500 THB)
- **Green Guide Fest**: In 2026 TAT ran a sustainable-tourism festival at Railway Park in late August. Check whether it returns. (28-30 August 2026)

## Eating alone

- **Khao Soi Mae Sai**: The khao soi on Michelin's Bib Gourmand list, in the cheapest price band. Curry noodle soup, eaten quickly, often alone. (฿ band)
- **Roti Pa Day, Tha Phae Road**: A Bib Gourmand street food stall on the road running from the old city towards the river. (฿ band)
- **Lung Khajohn Wat Ket and other Bib Gourmand stalls**: Michelin lists 18 Bib Gourmand places in Chiang Mai, including street stalls such as Lung Khajohn Wat Ket and Tue Ka Ko Na Prince. The simplest way to eat alone without thinking about it. (฿ band)
- **The 75-baht meal**: Numbeo users put a meal at an inexpensive restaurant at around 75 baht, about £1.70. (75 THB)

## At night

- Going out: Nimman and the Tha Phae area are busiest in the evening, but we haven't verified individual bars, so none are listed.
- Getting back: Yellow and Red city buses run until 23:30. After that, shared red songthaews and taxis. Numbeo users put a ride at around 30 baht and a taxi flag-fall at 40.
- Avoid: Unattended drinks and spirits of doubtful origin, given the methanol warnings for the whole country.

## Safety

### General

The national warnings apply: spiked drinks, methanol in spirits, rental scams. Italy's foreign ministry also flags fake tech job offers in the north near the Myanmar border that lead to abduction into scam compounds. Turn down any job offer that turns up while you're travelling.

### Women

We have no Chiang Mai-specific data. The FCDO reports sexual assaults in tourist areas near bars late at night, so sort out the ride home before you go out.

### LGBTQ+

National law applies, with marriage equality since 2025. The FCDO calls Thailand generally safe for LGBT+ travellers.

### Trans people

Thailand has no legal gender recognition. This section must be written and reviewed by trans contributors before publication.

### At night

Buses stop at 23:30. After that, songthaew or taxi, ideally shared.

### Common scams

Bike rentals holding passports over claimed damage, copycat Thailand Digital Arrival Card sites, job offers that look too good to be true.

### Emergency numbers

- General emergency and police: 191
- Ambulance: 1669
- Tourist police: 1155

### Hospitals

- Chiang Mai Ram Hospital, Boonruengrit Road (private, tel. 052-004-699)
- Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital (university hospital, Faculty of Medicine, 110 Intawarorot Road)

## LGBTQ+

- Same-sex relationships are legal
- Marriage: legal, law enacted in 2024
- Legal gender recognition: not possible
- Spartacus Gay Travel Index 2026: #52
- Checked on 2026-11-02

Same-sex marriage has been legal in Thailand since 23 January 2025, and the FCDO considers the country generally safe for LGBT+ travellers. For Chiang Mai we haven't yet verified venues open today or the date of the local Pride, so none are listed. Trans people cannot change the gender on Thai documents.

- **Rainbow Sky Association of Thailand**: National LGBTQIA+ health and rights organisation with clinics in several provinces, offering bookable HIV testing and PrEP. https://www.rsat.info/

## Dating

- Norms: We don't have a verified source on local dating habits, so we won't describe them.
- Safety: Meet in public and keep your drink in sight. The FCDO reports spiked drinks across Thailand's tourist areas.

- In town: Walk inside the moat. Beyond it, shared red songthaews that go where you ask, or the Yellow and Red buses. A ride costs about 30 baht according to Numbeo users.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is Chiang Mai safe for solo travellers?

Official advice doesn't single out Chiang Mai for risks beyond the national ones, which are spiked drinks, methanol and rental scams. The more concrete local issue is air quality. The FCDO mentions seasonal smoke haze from farmers burning trees and crops.

### How much does a day in Chiang Mai cost?

Less than Bangkok. A dorm bed at €5 to €11 list price, 75-baht meals per Numbeo users and a couple of songthaew rides comes to around 800 baht, under £20. A cooking class or half a day with elephants takes you to 2,000 to 3,500 baht.

### How do you meet people in Chiang Mai?

Through group activities. Cooking classes with your own station, day programmes at Elephant Nature Park, meditation courses at Wat Suan Dok, and hostels such as Stamps Backpackers that run something every night.

### When is the lantern festival in 2026?

Yi Peng and Loy Krathong follow the November full moon. In 2026 hostels hold their lantern nights on 24 and 25 November. Book early: prices rise and discount codes don't apply during festivals.

### Is Chiang Mai good for LGBTQ+ travellers?

National law applies, with marriage equality since 2025, and the FCDO calls Thailand generally safe for LGBT+ travellers. We haven't yet verified LGBTQ+ venues or events currently running in the city.

### How do I get from the airport into town?

Shuttles A1 and A2 cost 40 baht and serve Nimmanhaemin, the old city moat and the Night Bazaar. Yellow and Red city buses run 06:00 to 23:30. Everything leaves from Gate 12 at the international terminal.

### Is Chiang Mai a good base for remote work?

Yes. Punspace runs two coworking spaces in the old city, open 09:00 to 18:00 and around the clock for members. Check air quality before committing to a month in the smoky season.
