## The short verdict

Yes, especially on a tight budget. A bed in a four-bed women's dorm in the Old Quarter costs $12, student volunteers from Hanoikids show you round for free, and every Saturday there's a group run open to walkers too. What you pay in return is the motorbike traffic, which makes even crossing the road tiring, and the odd phone snatch.

- Best season: Nov–Feb
- Daily budget for one: 400000–2000000 VND (mid 1000000)

Few capitals make being alone this cheap, in money and in social effort. In the Old Quarter a bed in a four-bed women's dorm costs $12, and Hostelworld lists dorms from just over €4. Hanoikids, a club of student volunteers, will show you round in English for free; you cover tickets and food. On Saturdays there's a group run that welcomes walkers too.

The road is what wears you down. The FCDO says motorbike travel in Vietnam is much riskier than in the UK and that bag-snatching by passing riders is common. Even crossing the street and walking on the pavement need care, Italy's foreign ministry adds. Give yourself two days before you stop flinching at every junction.

The food makes up for it. Michelin gives 22 Hanoi places a Bib Gourmand, many of them phở, bún chả or bánh cuốn counters where eating alone on a low stool is completely normal. Numbeo users put a cheap meal at 52,500 dong, about £1.50.

One timing note: the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum complex is closed until 2 November 2026.

### Old Quarter (Hoàn Kiếm)

- Pro: The solo traveller's base. Hostels with women's dorms, Bib Gourmand food counters, Hanoikids evening food tours.
- Con: Constant motorbike noise, pavements used as parking, and crossing the street takes practice.
- At night: Busy until late. Keep your phone away from the kerb.
- Price band: low
- Place to stay: Little Charm Hanoi Hostel, 44 Hàng Bồ, four- and six-bed women's dorms and an indoor pool
- Place to stay: Mad Monkey Hanoi, 11 Mã Mây, dorms from €6.10 (Hostelworld list price)

- Con: Far from the museums, so you'll rely on taxis or apps.
- At night: Quieter than the Old Quarter.
- Price band: mid

### Ba Đình

- Pro: Government buildings and the Ho Chi Minh complex, plus Family Medical Practice on Kim Mã.
- Con: Wide boulevards and few places to eat in the evening. The Mausoleum complex is shut until 2 November 2026.
- At night: Quiet after dinner.
- Price band: mid

### Đống Đa

- Pro: Home to the Temple of Literature, with evening openings three times a week, and the Hanoi French Hospital on Phương Mai.
- Con: Fewer hostels and less going on if you want other travellers.
- At night: Ordinary residential area. Snatching precautions apply everywhere.
- Price band: low

## Things to do alone

- **Temple of Literature (Văn Miếu – Quốc Tử Giám)**: Open daily 08:00 to 17:00. On Wednesdays and at weekends it reopens 18:30 to 22:00 for a night programme with its own ticket. (70,000 VND)
- **Hỏa Lò Prison**: Open every day 08:00 to 17:00, holidays and Tết included, at 1 Hỏa Lò Street.

- **Metro line 2A**: The elevated Cát Linh to Hà Đông line runs above the traffic, a calm way to see the city from above. Trains run 05:30 to 22:00. (05:30-22:00)

## Eating alone

- **Phở Gia Truyền (Hoàn Kiếm)**: A Bib Gourmand phở counter. You eat a bowl and free the seat, so solo is the default.
- **Bun Cha Ta and Tuyết Bún Chả 34**: Two Bib Gourmand bún chả places, the first on Nguyễn Hữu Huân. One dish; pointing works.
- **Bánh Cuốn Gia Truyền Thanh Vân (Hàng Gà)**: Steamed rice rolls on the Bib Gourmand list. A quick breakfast or lunch in the Old Quarter.
- **The 52,500-dong meal**: Numbeo users' average for a meal at an inexpensive restaurant, about £1.50. Most solo dinners start here. (52,500 VND)

## At night

- Going out: We haven't verified individual bars yet, so none are listed. Evening crowds gather in the Old Quarter.
- Getting back: The metro stops at 22:00. After that, book Grab or Xanh SM and set the full route in the app. Numbeo users put a taxi flag-fall at around 20,000 dong.
- Avoid: Cyclos and motorbike taxis at night. Homemade spirits and cocktails because of methanol. Isolated streets around train and bus stations.

## Safety

### General

Phone snatching by passing motorbikes, aimed at people standing on the pavement, is the risk named most often, and it rises around Christmas and Tết. Traffic is the bigger danger. Leave your passport and spare cash in the hotel safe and carry a photocopy.

### Women

The FCDO reports harassment and groping, particularly when walking alone, and assaults often linked to unlicensed taxis. Use apps and pick a hostel with a women's dorm.

### LGBTQ+

No criminal penalties, no marriage recognition. The FCDO describes Vietnam as generally tolerant.

### Trans people

The FCDO notes no criminal penalties for changing gender. Advice on documents and screening must be written and reviewed by trans contributors before publication.

### At night

No cyclos or motorbike taxis late, no driving after dark. Get home in an app-booked car.

### Common scams

Free airport shuttles you didn't book, unlicensed taxis, bike rentals keeping your passport, police fines for minor or non-existent offences.

### Emergency numbers

- Police: 113
- Fire: 114
- Ambulance: 115

### Hospitals

- Hanoi French Hospital, 1 Phương Mai, Đống Đa (private, emergency +84-24 3574 1111)
- Raffles Medical Hanoi, 51 Xuân Diệu, Tây Hồ (private, 24-hour emergency)

## LGBTQ+

- Same-sex relationships are legal
- Marriage: not recognised
- Legal gender recognition: in Civil Code, no procedure exists
- Spartacus Gay Travel Index 2026: #59
- Checked on 2026-11-02

Same-sex relationships are legal in Vietnam and same-sex marriage is not recognised. Hanoi is home to the iSEE institute, which runs an LGBTI rights programme. We haven't yet verified venues open today or dates for Pride in the city, so none are listed.

- **iSEE Institute**: Research institute with an LGBTI rights programme. https://isee.org.vn/

## Dating

- Norms: We don't have a verified source on Hanoi dating habits. Italy's foreign ministry notes that a foreigner may share a hotel room with an adult Vietnamese partner without being married, as long as both show valid ID.
- Safety: Meet in public and get home in an app-booked car. The FCDO warns that the burden of proof in assault cases is higher than in the UK.
