## The short verdict

Yes, especially for a first solo city break: the centre is walkable, transport is cheap and Numbeo users rate it safer than Budapest. The real problems are pickpockets on the trams to the Castle and street money changers. If you want quiet at the weekend, stay in Vinohrady or Holešovice rather than the Old Town.

- Best season: May–Sept
- Daily budget for one: 1000–3400 CZK (mid 1900)

Prague is easy alone because it is compact and cheap to get around. Half an hour on the trams costs 36 koruna on the app, about £1.25. In a single day you can walk the Old Town, cross the bridge and climb through Malá Strana, and in the evening there is always a bar where nobody wonders why you are on your own. At Lokál Dlouhááá the bar is almost seventy metres long.

The centre is also where the trouble concentrates. The UK Foreign Office puts pickpockets first, on transport from the airport and on the Castle trams, then street money changers handing over counterfeit notes, and fake plain-clothes police who ask to see your cash. In clubs it warns about spiked drinks and consumption cards that carry a penalty if you lose them.

The simplest fix is to sleep outside the Old Town. Vinohrady, Žižkov and Holešovice are a few tram stops away, cost less and are calmer at night. Women travelling alone have an extra option close to the centre: two hostels that take women only.

## Who it's for

- First-time solo travellers who want a small, walkable capital
- Women looking for a women-only hostel near the centre
- Rail travellers pairing Prague with Vienna or Dresden
- Winter travellers: the Christmas markets run from late November to early January

## Who it's not for

- People who want an Old Town room and quiet on Saturday night
- Anyone who won't keep track of ticket validation and 1,000-koruna fines
- Those after a queer scene on the scale of Berlin's

## Where to stay alone

### Staré Město (Old Town, Prague 1)

- Pro: Everything on foot. Two women-only hostels are here, along with Lokál Dlouhááá, the LGBT+ Community Center on Železná and the Friends club.
- Con: Pickpocket and street money-changer territory. Bars and restaurants on the squares are the most expensive in the city.
- At night: Busy until late. The reported risks are theft and club bills rather than assault.
- Price band: high
- Place to stay: Women's Only Hostel Prague, dorms from about 16 euros, 300 metres from the centre
- Place to stay: Luna Female Hostel, dorms from about 12 euros, 600 metres from the centre

### Vinohrady and Vršovice (Prague 2 and 10)

- Pro: Residential and a few stops from the centre, with Lokál Korunní for dinner at the bar. Czech Inn on Francouzská has its own bar and café.
- Con: Czech Inn is about 2.5 km from the centre, so you will use trams for sightseeing.
- At night: Quieter than the Old Town. Residential streets empty out after midnight.
- Price band: mid
- Place to stay: Czech Inn, Francouzská 76, dorms from about 10 euros
- Place to stay: Prague Retreat Vinohrady, dorms from about 12 euros

### Žižkov (Prague 3)

- Pro: Cheaper than the Old Town. Sir Toby's Midtown on Dalimilova has its own bar.
- Con: About 2 km from the centre, walkable by day but you will want a tram at night.
- At night: Calmer than the centre. The usual care on night trams applies.
- Price band: low
- Place to stay: Sir Toby's Midtown, Dalimilova 10, dorms from about 11 euros

### Holešovice (Prague 7)

- Pro: Low prices and a hostel with a proper pub, Sir Toby's on Dělnická.
- Con: About 2.7 km from the centre, so the tram becomes routine.
- At night: Calm, with the normal precautions on night trams.
- Price band: low
- Place to stay: Sir Toby's Hostel, Dělnická 24, dorms from about 10 euros

## How to meet people

- **Queer Support Group in English**: Prague Pride runs a free English-language support group, plus free legal and one-to-one counselling. Also a way into the local community if you are staying a few weeks. (Free)
- **Thursdays at the LGBT+ Community Center**: The centre at Železná 18 hosts debates, screenings, workshops and groups. Open Thursdays from 15:00 to 21:00, September to June. (Thursday 15:00-21:00; Železná 18, Prague 1)
- **Sandemans free tour**: A tip-based walk around the centre. The simplest first contact with other solo travellers, and it gets you oriented before you go off alone. (Pay what you like)
- **The bar at Sir Toby's**: The Holešovice hostel has a pub on site and runs events, and the Žižkov branch has a bar too. Ask reception for the week's programme. (Dělnická 24 and Dalimilova 10)
- **The bar at Lokál Dlouhááá**: Beer from 12 tanks and Czech pub food. At the bar you stand or sit next to strangers, which is the most natural way to start talking. Book if you want a table. (Mon-Sat 11:00-24:00, Sun 11:00-22:00; Dlouhá 33, Prague 1)

## Things to do alone

- **Prague Visitor Pass**: Unlimited public transport including the airport, free or discounted entry at more than 70 sites, guided tours and a Vltava cruise. 2,700 koruna for 48 hours (about £93), 3,300 for 72 and 3,900 for 120. (2,700-3,900 CZK)
- **Prague Spring festival**: The city's international classical music festival. Tickets for the 82nd edition go on sale in early November 2026. Before that, the Rudolf Firkušný Piano Festival runs from 3 to 9 November 2026.
- **Christmas markets**: On Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square from 28 November 2026 to 6 January 2027. The Wenceslas Square market opens 10:00 to 22:00. (28/11/2026-6/1/2027)
- **A day trip by train**: Czech Railways run direct trains to Dresden and to Austria, with tickets on the Můj vlak app. Prague works well as a base.
- **A night at Friends**: Long-running gay club on Bartolomějská, open daily from 21:00 to 06:00. Its site says non-gay guests are welcome too. (Daily 21:00-06:00; Bartolomějská 11)
- **Vltava cruise and tram 42**: Both included in the Prague Visitor Pass. Two ways to see the city sitting down after a day on your feet.

## Eating alone

- **Lokál Dlouhááá**: The chain's longest bar, almost seventy metres, and Czech food. Alone, you can eat at the bar without a booking. (Dlouhá 33; Numbeo puts a cheap meal in Prague at 230 CZK, about £8)
- **Lokál Korunní**: The same formula in Vinohrady, handy if you are staying that side. Open from 11:00 (12:00 at weekends) until 23:30. (Korunní 39, Prague 2)
- **Manifesto Market Anděl**: Street food market with separate stalls. Everyone orders for themselves and sits wherever there is room. (Anděl)
- **Christmas markets**: From late November you eat standing at the stalls on Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square, the easiest winter dinner for one. (28/11/2026-6/1/2027)

## At night

- Going out: The Old Town for clubs, Vinohrady and Žižkov for neighbourhood bars. In clubs the Foreign Office advises refusing drinks from strangers and watching out for consumption cards, which carry a penalty if lost.
- Getting back: Night buses 907 (via the main station and Karlovo náměstí) and 910 (via Kačerov) connect the airport and the city, about 45 minutes to the centre. In town, standard PID tickets apply: validate before boarding, as the on-the-spot fine is 1,000 koruna.
- Avoid: Unmarked taxis. Use a major company and check the posted rates before getting in. At the airport Uber can be booked through the app or at a kiosk.

## Safety

### General

Numbeo users (738 contributions) give Prague a safety index of 75.4 out of 100. The Foreign Office flags pickpocketing on transport from the airport and on Castle trams. If you are robbed, report it in person within 24 hours: the central police station is open round the clock with English-speaking interpreters. Lampposts carry six-digit numbers you can give police to show where you are.

### Women

We found no recent official data on street harassment in Prague. Numbeo users score walking alone at night at 73.8 out of 100. The specific risk the Foreign Office highlights is drink spiking in bars and clubs.

### LGBTQ+

Same-sex relationships and partnerships are legal; marriage is not. The Foreign Office warns that public affection between same-sex couples may attract unwanted attention.

### Trans people

Since July 2025 a Ministry of Health methodology allows legal gender recognition without surgery or hormone treatment, on a psychologist's certification and signed informed consent. ILGA-Europe still calls for removing requirements such as compulsory divorce. This section needs review by a trans person before publication.

### At night

The centre stays busy late. On night trams and in clubs, follow the Foreign Office's advice on theft and drinks.

### Common scams

Street money changing with counterfeit notes; fake plain-clothes police asking for your passport and cash (offer to walk to the station, or call 112); unmarked taxis; club consumption cards.

### Emergency numbers

- Emergency (police, ambulance, fire): 112
- FCDO London, 24 hours: +44 20 7008 5000

### Hospitals

- Všeobecná fakultní nemocnice v Praze (General University Hospital), U Nemocnice 499/2, Prague 2 (switchboard +420 224 961 111)
- Nemocnice Na Homolce, Roentgenova 37/2, Prague 5

## LGBTQ+

- Same-sex relationships are legal
- Marriage: not recognised
- Legal gender recognition: sexologist diagnosis, no sterilisation (2025)
- Spartacus Gay Travel Index 2026: #52
- ILGA-Europe Rainbow Map 2026: 41.72%
- Checked on 2026-11-02

Czechia is 24th of 49 in ILGA-Europe's Rainbow Map 2026. Since January 2025 same-sex unions are called "partnerství" and carry rights such as joint property and survivor's pensions, but marriage was not extended and adoption remains restricted. Prague has a community centre in the Old Town, a long-running club and a Pride in August.

Areas: Staré Město, Vinohrady

- **Friends Prague**: Gay club in the Old Town, open to everyone, daily from 21:00 to 06:00. (21:00-06:00; Bartolomějská 11, Prague 1) https://www.friendsclub.cz/
- **LGBT+ Community Center**: Meeting space run by Prague Pride, with debates, screenings, groups and a queer library. (Thursday 15:00-21:00 (September to June); Železná 18, Prague 1) https://www.praguepride.com/en/

- **Prague Pride z.s.**: Besides the festival it runs the community centre, free legal advice, a bias-attack reporting form and Qalendar, a guide to queer events. https://www.praguepride.com/en/

## Dating

- App: Tinder, Bumble, Hinge, Grindr
- Norms: For a first meeting pick somewhere you know, a Lokál or a Vinohrady bar, rather than an Old Town club.
- Safety: The Foreign Office reports drink spiking in bars and clubs and steep bills tied to consumption cards. Don't leave your glass unattended or accept drinks from strangers. For any problem, 112.
