## The short verdict

Yes, if your budget can take it. Copenhagen is compact, the metro runs around the clock including to the airport, and Denmark tops the Women, Peace and Security Index 2025/26. Cost is the real obstacle: Visit Copenhagen puts a tight budget at about 700 kroner a day. Best for people who like bikes, saunas and harbour swims.

- Best season: May–Sept
- Daily budget for one: 700–4500 DKK (mid 1800)

Copenhagen may be the easiest capital in northern Europe to do alone, provided you accept the bill. The metro runs 24 hours a day and goes to the airport, and nearly everything else is a short cycle or walk away. Visit Copenhagen itself compares the cost level with London and Oslo, and its tight-budget estimate of 700 kroner a day comes to about 78 pounds before you have sat down in a restaurant.

The weak spots are few and specific. Pickpockets work Central Station, Nørreport, Strøget and Christiania, and the FCDO advises extra care in Christiania and Nørrebro late at night because of gang violence. Winter days are short and dark. Danes are polite, but conversations with strangers rarely start on their own.

What works here is doing things alongside other people: a shared sauna session on the harbour, a hostel game night, a beer in a bar that has been part of LGBTQ+ history for decades. Drink the tap water, use the 60-plus public fountains, and do not worry about tipping, which is optional.

## Who it's for

- Anyone who wants a safe city to cover by bike and metro at any hour
- Women travelling alone who put safety first
- LGBTQ+ travellers looking for historic bars and a queer film festival
- Sauna, cold-plunge and harbour-swim fans

## Who it's not for

- Tight budgets that still want to eat out every night
- Travellers hoping for easy chats with locals
- Anyone who struggles with short winter days

## Where to stay alone

### Indre By (centre, Kongens Nytorv)

- Pro: Everything on foot, the airport metro at Kongens Nytorv, and most LGBTQ+ bars in the Latin Quarter and around Rådhuspladsen.
- Con: High prices, and Strøget and Rådhuspladsen are pickpocket hotspots.
- At night: Strøget, Rådhuspladsen and Gothersgade get crowded at weekends. Getting home by metro is easy.
- Price band: high
- Place to stay: Generator Copenhagen, Adelgade 5-7: female-only dorms and private rooms, a bar with shuffleboard

### Vesterbro

- Pro: The old red-light district now mixes family life with nightlife and boutiques. Close to Central Station and to Vela, the lesbian bar.
- Con: Pickpocketing is common around Central Station, and a few streets still have sex shops.
- At night: Lively until late. Keep your bag in front of you near the station.
- Price band: mid
- Place to stay: Steel House Copenhagen, Herholdtsgade 6: four and six-bed dorms from 145 kroner, single rooms, free events
- Place to stay: Danhostel Copenhagen City, H.C. Andersens Boulevard 50: 1,040 beds over 17 floors, walking distance from Central Station

### Nørrebro

- Pro: The city's most multicultural district, with cheap food and a more relaxed street life than the centre.
- Con: Both the FCDO and Italy's foreign ministry advise care at night because of gang violence.
- At night: No particular issues by day. Late at night, stick to main roads and the metro.
- Price band: mid

### Christianshavn and Refshaleøen

- Pro: Canals, Christiania and, further north, Refshaleøen with Reffen street food and CopenHot's saunas.
- Con: Christiania needs care at night, and Refshaleøen is a long way from the metro.
- At night: The FCDO advises extra care in Christiania late at night. Plan your way back in advance.
- Price band: mid

## How to meet people

- **Game night at Steel House**: Phone-based party games for two to eight players in the hostel lounge. Free, and explicitly pitched at people who turn up alone. (Wednesdays at 8pm; Herholdtsgade 6, Vesterbro; Free)
- **Live music and free walking tour at Steel House**: Free live music on Monday nights, and a free walking tour every day leaving from the hostel, booked online. (Music Mondays 9pm, tour daily; Herholdtsgade 6, Vesterbro; Free)

- **CopenPay harbour clean-ups**: Through CopenPay, actions like cycling or helping clean the harbour unlock rewards such as museum entry or a coffee. An easy way to do something with other people.

## Things to do alone

- **Swim at Islands Brygge harbour bath**: The public harbour bath at Islands Brygge is within walking distance of Danhostel City.
- **Harbour sauna at CopenHot**: Wood-fired saunas and hot tubs on Refshaleøen, looking over the old shipyard. HotDays sessions are shared, so they work well on your own. (350 DKK per person)
- **MIX Copenhagen**: The LGBTQIA+ film festival, founded in 1986. The 2026 edition runs from 30 October to 8 November.

## Eating alone

- **TorvehallerneKBH**: Covered food market where you eat at the counter or standing. Coffee and pastries from 7am. (Mon-Fri 10am-7pm, Sat-Sun 10am-6pm; Frederiksborggade 21, by Nørreport)
- **Reffen**: Harbourside street food on Refshaleøen with kitchens from all over the world and shared tables. Open every day in October. (Refshaleøen)
- **Oscar Bar & Cafe**: Gay bar and café beside City Hall on Rainbow Square, an easy place for a solo bite. (Rådhuspladsen)

## At night

- Going out: The centre around Gothersgade, Strøget and Studiestræde for bars and clubs, Vesterbro for a younger crowd, the Latin Quarter for LGBTQ+ bars.
- Getting back: The metro runs 24 hours a day between the centre, the neighbourhoods and the airport.
- Avoid: Christiania and Nørrebro late at night, where the FCDO and Italy's foreign ministry report gang violence. Do not go looking for drugs in Christiania: all illegal drugs, cannabis included, carry severe penalties in Denmark.

## Safety

### General

The FCDO rates crime as generally low but lists pickpocketing hotspots at Central Station, Nørreport, Strøget, Christiania, Nyhavn, Kongens Nytorv and inside the airport. Italy's foreign ministry adds reports of youth gangs behind thefts and assaults.

### Women

Denmark is first of 181 in the Women, Peace and Security Index 2025/26. Generator has female-only dorms. The usual night-time caution applies in Christiania and Nørrebro.

### LGBTQ+

Visit Copenhagen describes the city as safe for LGBTQIA+ people. The FCDO confirms same-sex relationships and marriage are legal.

### Trans people

Denmark has allowed legal gender change by self-determination since 2014, with a reflection period, and passports can show an X marker. This section needs review by a trans person before publication.

### At night

The 24-hour metro makes getting home simple. At weekends Strøget, Rådhuspladsen and Gothersgade are packed, so watch your phone.

- Medical helpline (non-urgent): 1813
