## The short verdict

Yes, if you want a tidy northern city where everything works alone, from public saunas to a day ferry to Helsinki: Numbeo users rate its safety at 78.6 out of 100. Evenings out are not cheap, with a half-litre of beer at about 6 euros. Anyone after midweek nightlife or warm weather should look elsewhere.

- Best season: May–Jul
- Daily budget for one: 50–190 EUR (mid 105)

In Tallinn the things you do alone are the things everyone does. You go to a public sauna, eat lunch at the market, catch the morning ferry to Helsinki and come back for dinner. The old town is walkable and transport is paid by tapping your bank card on the validator: 2 euros an hour, capped automatically at a day ticket.

The catch is the bar bill. Numbeo users put a half-litre of beer at 6 euros, about £5, and a cheap meal at 15, both more than in Ljubljana and roughly double Budapest. Beds are cheap by comparison, with dorms from 8.50 euros, so your budget is decided in the evening rather than overnight.

On safety Tallinn does well, 78.6 out of 100 for Numbeo users. The UK Foreign Office still warns that pickpocketing concentrates in Old Town bars and clubs, that assaults, while rare, happen mainly late at night near nightlife, and that Estonian drinks are often stronger than British ones. Save your accommodation in your maps app before you head out.

Residents ride public transport free; visitors pay.

## Where to stay alone

### Vanalinn (Old Town)

- Pro: Everything on foot, with several hostels about a kilometre from Hostelworld's centre point.
- Con: This is where the Foreign Office flags pickpocketing in bars and clubs. Tourist-zone prices.
- At night: Lively at weekends. Assaults are rare but happen mostly late at night near the bars.
- Price band: mid
- Place to stay: Zinc Old Tallinn, dorms from about 8.50 euros
- Place to stay: Old Town Munkenhof, dorms from about 13 euros
- Place to stay: Old Town Alur Hostel, dorms from about 11 euros

### Kalamaja and Telliskivi

- Pro: Home to Kalma sauna (Vana-Kalamaja 9a), Balti Jaama Turg market (Kopli 1) and Fotografiska (Telliskivi 60a).
- Con: Few verified hostels, so you will often sleep in the centre and come here by day.
- At night: Quieter than the Old Town. Use a TAKSO-signed cab or an app to get back.
- Price band: mid

### Kesklinn, around Viru

- Pro: Viru Backpackers has private rooms from about 15 euros, around 1.2 km from Hostelworld's centre point.
- Con: No dorms, so it suits people who want a room of their own.
- At night: The Foreign Office advice applies, signed TAKSO cabs or apps only.
- Price band: mid
- Place to stay: Viru Backpackers, private rooms from about 15 euros

## How to meet people

- **Kalma public sauna**: One of the city's oldest saunas, built in 1928, with separate men's and women's sections. Conversation in a sauna comes easily, and it is the most local way to spend an evening. On the last Friday of the month the women's section opens at 15:00. (Mon-Fri 11:00-22:00, Sat-Sun 10:00-23:00; Vana-Kalamaja 9a; 14-20 EUR)
- **The bar at Monk's Bunk**: A hostel with its own bar on Hostelworld's list, with some of the cheapest dorms in town. Ask reception what is on that night. (Dorms from about 9 EUR)
- **Balti Jaama Turg street food**: Shared tables in the market's street food area, open until 20:00 Monday to Saturday and 18:00 on Sunday. (Kopli 1)
- **Estonian LGBT Association support groups**: The association runs counselling and support groups at its centre on Kaarli puiestee. Visits are arranged in advance. (Kaarli pst 5-1)
- **PÖFF screenings**: The Black Nights Film Festival reaches its 30th edition, with competition screenings from 13 to 19 November 2026. Cinema alone is the most normal thing in the world, and queues are good for talking. (November)

## Things to do alone

- **Kalma sauna**: A public sauna from 1928 in Kalamaja. The women's section is 14 euros Monday to Thursday, the men's 17, a little more at weekends. (14-20 EUR)
- **Iglupark at Noblessner**: Saunas facing the sea at Lennusadama 7, open 8:30 to 23:00. The Noblessner site stays open until 31 December 2026, with a new location announced. (Lennusadama 7)
- **Fotografiska Tallinn**: Photography museum in Telliskivi, with a ground-floor café and a sixth-floor restaurant and rooftop bar. Exhibitions stay open until midnight on Fridays. (Telliskivi 60a-8)
- **Helsinki for the day**: Six daily Tallink departures on the Tallinn-Helsinki route. An easy solo day out with no extra night to book.
- **PÖFF, Black Nights Film Festival**: November film festival, in its 30th edition in 2026. Competition from 13 to 19 November. (November)
- **Balti Jaam market**: Stalls, meat and fish halls, a vegetable street and a street food area, with restaurants on the second floor. (Kopli 1)

## Eating alone

- **Balti Jaama Turg street food**: Order at the counter and sit wherever there is space. The cheapest way to lunch alone in Tallinn. (Mon-Sat 09:00-20:00, Sun 09:00-18:00; Kopli 1)
- **Fotografiska café**: Coffee, pastries and lunches on the ground floor. A table to sit alone at between exhibitions. (Telliskivi 60a-8)
- **A benchmark bill**: Numbeo users put a cheap meal at 15 euros (about £12.50) and a cappuccino at 3.89. Lunch at the market and save restaurant dinners for the nights that matter. (15 EUR)

## At night

- Going out: The Old Town has the bars and clubs, and that is where the Foreign Office flags pickpocketing. Fotografiska's rooftop bar and its Friday late opening until midnight make an alternative to a bar crawl.
- Getting back: Night buses run on Friday and Saturday nights, about every 30 minutes from 00:30 to 03:30, on the same tickets as by day. For taxis use only cars with TAKSO signs, a price list and a meter, or the Bolt, Forus and Uber apps.
- Avoid: Unmarked cars offering rides, which are illegal. Don't leave drinks unattended, and don't let anyone you're out with go home alone.

## Safety

### General

Numbeo users (375 contributions) give Tallinn a safety index of 78.6 out of 100. The Foreign Office flags pickpocketing in Old Town bars and clubs, card skimming (keep your card in sight when paying) and Ukrainian drones aimed at Russia that have occasionally entered Estonian airspace; follow official guidance.

### Women

The Foreign Office says assaults, including sexual assaults, are rare but do occur, mostly late at night near nightlife areas. It advises saving your accommodation in your maps app and keeping an eye on drinks.

### LGBTQ+

Same-sex sexual activity is legal and same-sex marriage has been recognised since 1 January 2024. In December 2025 the government adopted a national LGBT equal opportunities action plan.

### Trans people

Since August 2025 the medical committee on gender recognition has had a consultative role, but the Estonian LGBT Association says little has changed in practice. This section needs review by a trans person before publication.

### At night

Drinks in Estonian bars are often stronger than in the UK, the Foreign Office warns. Signed TAKSO cabs or apps only.

### Common scams

Unmarked illegal taxis; card skimming at the point of payment.

### Emergency numbers

- Emergency (police, ambulance, fire): 112
- FCDO London, 24 hours: +44 20 7008 5000

### Hospitals

- North Estonia Medical Centre (Põhja-Eesti Regionaalhaigla), emergency line +372 617 1400

- Checked on 2026-11-02

Estonia is 21st of 49 in ILGA-Europe's Rainbow Map 2026 (46%) and has recognised same-sex marriage since 1 January 2024. A national action plan adopted in December 2025 has a midterm review in 2027. In 2026 Tallinn hosted Baltic Pride, with more than 50 events across Tallinn and Tartu. We could not find an up-to-date, verifiable source listing LGBTQ+ bars open today, so ask the Estonian LGBT Association for local tips.

- **Estonian LGBT Association centre**: Community centre with counselling, support groups, training and exhibitions. Visits by appointment (+372 5551 5817, info@lgbt.ee). (Kaarli pst 5-1, Tallinn) https://www.lgbt.ee/

- **Eesti LGBT Ühing (Estonian LGBT Association)**: Counselling, support groups, training and the "Kõik on teretulnud" (everyone is welcome) campaign. https://www.lgbt.ee/

## Dating

- App: Tinder, Bumble, Hinge, Grindr
- Norms: For a first date pick somewhere you know in the Old Town or Telliskivi, and remember a night out adds up, with beer at around 6 euros.
- Safety: No specific legal risks. The Foreign Office advises watching drinks and using only signed taxis or apps. In an emergency, 112.

## Getting around

- From the airport, also at night: Tram 4 links the airport with Tondi, and buses 2 (stop by the multi-storey car park on Tartu maantee) and 65 also serve it. The 2-euro ticket is paid by contactless card on the validator; Ühiskaart cards are sold at the R-kiosk in arrivals. We found no official time for the last service, so if you land late use a signed taxi or an app.
- In town: Contactless card on the validator, 2 euros an hour, converting automatically to a day ticket. On an Ühiskaart 5.50 euros a day, 9 for three days, 11 for five.
- App: Bolt, Forus, Uber, Pilet.ee
