## The short verdict

Yes, if you want a cheap capital where company comes to you: hostels in District VII run something most nights and a transport ticket costs 500 forints, about £1.15. It works less well if you want a quiet centre on a Saturday night. LGBTQ+ travellers should know that the 2021 and 2025 laws have only partly been rolled back.

- Best season: Aug–Oct
- Daily budget for one: 17000–58000 HUF (mid 38000)

Budapest is one of the cheapest capitals in the EU to be on your own in, and one of the easiest. A single transport ticket is 500 forints, a little over a pound. The hostels of District VII have turned socialising into a timetable: game night on Monday, tacos on Tuesday, a quiz on Sunday. Arrive knowing nobody and you will have a table by the first evening.

The catch is the same street seen from another window. Around Kazinczy utca the weekends are loud and crowded, and the UK Foreign Office warns that some bars and clubs charge wildly inflated bills, sometimes walking tourists to a cashpoint to pay. If you want sleep, stay in District V or IX and come to VII to go out.

Then there is the politics. Between 2021 and 2025 Hungary passed an "anti-LGBTQ propaganda" law and banned Pride. A new government took office after the April 2026 election, the EU's top court struck down the 2021 law, and parliament voted in October to strip its anti-LGBTQ provisions. The Pride ban itself was still on paper in June. Day to day in the city this changes little, but read the LGBTQ+ section before you go to any public event.

## Who it's for

- First-time solo travellers who want a hostel with something on every night
- Anyone on a tight budget who still wants thermal baths and the odd museum
- Walkers, since District V to District VII is a few minutes on foot
- Off-season travellers looking for a city that stays busy in winter

## Who it's not for

- Light sleepers who want a central room on Friday and Saturday nights
- Anyone set on Gellért, which is closed until 2028
- People who don't want to check every bar bill
- Those expecting a queer scene the size of Berlin's or Vienna's

## Where to stay alone

### Erzsébetváros (District VII)

- Pro: Home of the social hostels and the bar streets. Maverick Budapest Soho is on Kazinczy utca and Maverick Athenaeum on Rákóczi út, both with a weekly events calendar.
- Con: Weekend noise reaches the windows. It is also where the Foreign Office's warnings about padded bills apply most.
- At night: Busy until late. The real risk is the bill, not the street. Read the price list before you order.
- Price band: low
- Place to stay: Maverick Budapest Soho, Kazinczy utca 24-26, with 8-bed and 10-bed female dorms
- Place to stay: Maverick Athenaeum, Rákóczi út 54, the group's largest hostel

### Belváros and around Deák Ferenc tér (Districts V-VI)

- Pro: All three metro lines meet at Deák Ferenc tér, which is also where the 100E airport bus ends. The river and District VII are both walkable.
- Con: You pay for the location. It is the most touristy area and restaurants on the main streets price accordingly.
- At night: Well lit with people about. The riverside bars along Belgrád rakpart keep the embankment busy late.
- Price band: mid
- Place to stay: Wombat's City Hostel Budapest, Király utca 20, near Deák Ferenc tér, with a bar and free in-house events
- Place to stay: Maverick Downtown, Ferenciek tere 2

### Ferencváros (District IX)

- Pro: More residential, next to the Great Market Hall. Maverick Central Market hosts Tuesday taco night and Thursday yoga.
- Con: Fewer bars within walking distance, so a night out means heading back to District VII.
- At night: Calmer than VII. The back streets are quieter after midnight.
- Price band: low
- Place to stay: Maverick Central Market, Lónyay utca 31, a social hostel
- Place to stay: MEININGER Budapest Great Market Hall

### Buda (Districts I and XI)

- Pro: The Castle, the hills and more quiet. The free Castle tour starts from Batthyány tér.
- Con: Few hostels and little in the evening. You cross the river for dinner and nights out.
- At night: Calm, at times empty. Fine if you are back early, less so at 1am.
- Price band: mid

## How to meet people

- **Maverick hostel events**: The October 2026 calendar runs game night on Mondays at Athenaeum, taco night on Tuesdays at Central Market, free beer pong on Thursdays, karaoke on Wednesdays and a quiz on Sundays. The quickest route to company in the city. (Most evenings, usually from 18:00 or 19:00; Maverick Athenaeum, Maverick Central Market, Maverick Budapest Soho; Free to 5,000 HUF)
- **Trip to Budapest walking tours**: Tip-based tours of the city, the Jewish Quarter, communist Budapest, the Castle and Art Nouveau. The company suggests 10-15 euros a head, cash preferred. Booking is optional but recommended. (Erzsébet tér by the Ferris wheel; Batthyány tér for the Castle; Pay what you like)
- **Bingo and karaoke at Why Not Café**: An LGBTQ+ bar on the Danube with regular bingo and karaoke nights. Its own site says most regulars are men and everyone is welcome. By day it is a café, so you can drop in just for a sandwich. (Belgrád rakpart 3-4, District V)
- **Hostel yoga**: Yoga on Thursday mornings at Maverick Central Market and on Saturdays at Athenaeum. Useful if you don't drink, or want to meet people before the evening starts. (Thursday 11:00, Saturday 12:30; Maverick Central Market, Maverick Athenaeum)
- **Free events at Wombat's**: The Király utca hostel has a bar, a café and free in-house events, including the WomBEATS gig series. The programme changes, so ask at reception on the day you arrive. (Király utca 20; Free)

## Things to do alone

- **Széchenyi Thermal Bath**: Open daily, until 22:00 on Fridays. A day ticket with a locker is 13,200 forints Monday to Thursday (about £30 or $40) and 14,800 Friday to Sunday. A private cabin adds 1,000. Nobody needs company to sit in warm water. (Állatkerti körút 9-11, District XIV; 13,200-15,800 HUF)
- **Free Buda Castle tour**: Starts from Batthyány tér on the Buda side and climbs to the Castle. Go in the morning, ahead of the coach groups. (Pay what you like)
- **Jewish Quarter tour**: District VII, the bar district, is also the historic Jewish Quarter. The free tour shows you by day the streets you will see packed at night. (Pay what you like)
- **Danube boat party**: On Saturday evenings the Maverick calendar lists a river cruise with free wine and fröccs (wine spritzer) tasting from 18:00. A sociable way to see Parliament lit up. (Saturday 18:00-20:30)
- **Budapest Wine Festival**: Held in the Royal Palace on Castle Hill. The 2026 edition ran from 9 to 12 September. You move from stall to stall, so arriving alone is no handicap. (September; Budavári Palota)
- **Communism tour**: Another of the Trip to Budapest free tours. Good grounding in the twentieth-century city before you pay for museums. (Pay what you like)

## Eating alone

- **Taco night at Maverick Central Market**: Tuesdays from 18:00 to 21:00, 5,000 forints. You eat with the other guests, which makes it the easiest dinner table in town on your first night. (Tuesday 18:00-21:00; Lónyay utca 31, District IX; 5,000 HUF)
- **Great Market Hall (Központi Vásárcsarnok)**: Upstairs there are food stalls where you eat standing or at the counter. Nobody looks twice at a table for one. Aim for lunchtime. (District IX)
- **Why Not Café by day**: Specialty coffee and sandwiches from 10:00. A riverside table where you can read alone without being moved on. (Daily from 10:00; Belgrád rakpart 3-4)
- **A benchmark bill**: Numbeo users put a meal at an inexpensive restaurant at around 4,500 forints (about £10) and a half-litre of beer at 1,200. If your bill lands far above that for no clear reason, ask for an explanation. (4,500 HUF)

## At night

- Going out: District VII for bars, with Szimpla Kert as the landmark. If you would rather sit down, head for Belgrád rakpart on the river, where Why Not stays open until 3am on Fridays and Saturdays. Maverick and Wombat's both have bars on site.
- Getting back: Tram 6 runs 24 hours a day. The night bus network was redrawn from the night of 1-2 July 2026, so check your route in BudapestGO before heading out. A ticket bought on board costs 700 forints.
- Avoid: Bars recommended by taxi drivers or strangers on the street. The Foreign Office says some drivers take a commission for delivering customers to certain venues, where bills can be very high. Check the price list before ordering and the bill before paying.

## Safety

### General

Numbeo users (815 contributions) give Budapest a safety index of 66.4 out of 100. The Foreign Office reports frequent pickpocketing and bag-snatching on crowded transport, in stations, at markets and in tourist areas. Watch your bags as trains pull into stations.

### Women

We found no official data specific to street harassment in Budapest. What exists is perception: Numbeo users score walking alone at night at 62.6 out of 100. Getting from District VII to IX after 1am, tram 6 or a cab from a known company makes more sense than the back streets on foot.

### LGBTQ+

The Foreign Office describes Budapest as generally tolerant and warns that outside the capital public affection may attract unwanted attention. In September 2026 it removed the information on restrictions to LGBT+ marches and events from its advice.

### Trans people

Legal gender recognition has been impossible in Hungary since 2020 under Section 33 of Act XXX of 2020. Háttér Society is campaigning for parliament to repeal it. This section needs review by a trans person before publication.

### At night

The centre stays busy late in District VII and along the river. The documented night-time problem is the bar bill rather than the street.

### Common scams

Padded bills in bars, clubs and restaurants, sometimes with an escort to the cashpoint. Taxi drivers steering you to a venue for a commission. Check the menu, use an established cab company.

### Emergency numbers

- Emergency (police, ambulance, fire): 112
- FCDO London, 24 hours (for friends and family in the UK): +44 20 7008 5000

### Hospitals

- Semmelweis University, Department of Emergency Medicine (public university hospital, headquarters at Üllői út 26)
- Budapesti Péterfy Sándor utcai Kórház-Rendelőintézet, Péterfy Sándor utca 8-20

## LGBTQ+

- Same-sex relationships are legal
- Marriage: not recognised, excluded by constitution
- Legal gender recognition: not possible since 2020
- Spartacus Gay Travel Index 2026: #123
- ILGA-Europe Rainbow Map 2026: 22.7%
- Checked on 2026-11-02

Hungary ranks 38th of 49 in ILGA-Europe's Rainbow Map 2026. In 2021 parliament passed the so-called child protection law, with provisions against the portrayal of LGBTQ+ people; in 2025 came a constitutional amendment and a law banning Pride. In April 2026 the Court of Justice of the EU ruled that the 2021 law breaches fundamental rights, and in October 2026 the new parliament voted 139 to 51 to remove its anti-LGBTQ provisions. The Pride ban was still formally in force in June 2026, although police authorised the march. We have not found a source confirming that ban has been repealed, so check before joining any public event. This is not legal advice.

Areas: Belváros (District V), Erzsébetváros (District VII)

- **Why Not Café & Bar**: LGBTQ+ bar on the Danube, a café by day and cocktails at night, with bingo and karaoke on set evenings. (Mon-Thu 10:00-02:00, Fri-Sat 10:00-03:00, Sun 10:00-01:00; Belgrád rakpart 3-4) https://www.whynotcafe.hu/
- **Habroló2**: Gay bar open since 2006, in its newer premises near Astoria since 2021. Quiz and karaoke on Thursdays, live piano on Sundays, drag on some Saturdays. (Near Astoria) https://www.habrolo.hu/

- **Háttér Society**: Free legal help in discrimination cases, an information and support line, and an HIV helpline (+36 1 6333 455, daily 8:00-22:00). https://en.hatter.hu/

## Dating

- App: Tinder, Bumble, Hinge, Grindr
- Norms: Pick the venue for a first meeting yourself, somewhere you already know. The documented risk in Budapest is less the app than the bar a new acquaintance steers you to, where the bill can be enormous.
- Safety: Meet in public, read the price list before ordering and the bill before paying. Someone insisting on one particular bar is a signal worth heeding. To report a crime, call 112.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is Budapest safe at night if you're on your own?

Numbeo users rate walking alone at night at 62.6 out of 100, against 85.3 by day. The UK Foreign Office flags pickpocketing on busy transport and in stations, plus bars that inflate the bill. Tram 6 runs all night.

### How much does a day in Budapest cost for one person?

A dorm bed, two cheap meals and a 24-hour pass come to around 17,000 forints, roughly £39 or $52. A private hostel room, a mid-range dinner and a session at the baths take you to around 38,000, about £87 or $115. Prices checked in October 2026.

### How do you meet people in Budapest?

The Maverick hostels publish a weekly calendar, from Monday game night to Sunday quiz, and the tip-based walking tours leave from Erzsébet tér. Ask at reception whether non-guests can join a given event.

### Is Budapest OK for LGBTQ+ travellers?

There are openly LGBTQ+ bars, and Pride on 27 June 2026 went ahead with police approval. The legal picture is unfinished. In June the 2025 law banning Pride was still formally on the books, and we have not found a source confirming its repeal since.

### Is the Gellért bath open?

No. Gellért closed for renovation on 1 October 2025 and is due to reopen in 2028. Its own website points visitors to Széchenyi, which opens every day.

### How do I get into town from the airport late at night?

Bus 100E runs between the airport and Deák Ferenc tér through the night, less often after midnight. It needs its own 2,500-forint ticket. Otherwise take a cab from an established company, as the Foreign Office advises.

### Do I need anything special to enter Hungary from the UK?

Hungary is in Schengen, and the EU Entry/Exit System now registers fingerprints and a photo on first entry. Your passport must be under 10 years old on arrival and valid for 3 months after you leave. Read the full GOV.UK page before booking.
