## The short verdict

Yes, and it is a strong pick for a first solo trip abroad. Iceland tops both the Global Peace Index 2026 and the Spartacus Gay Travel Index 2026, the centre is walkable and a geothermal pool costs 1,500 kronur. The drawback is price: a simple meal runs to about 3,800 kronur, so come with a healthy budget.

- Best season: Jul–Aug
- Daily budget for one: 18000–70000 ISK (mid 38000)

Reykjavík is about as calm as capitals get, which makes it an easy first solo trip. Iceland tops the Global Peace Index 2026, the centre is small enough to walk end to end, and the police do not carry guns. Better still for late arrivals, the Flybus leaves after every flight, even at three in the morning, so you never have to race for a last train.

The bill is the shock. Numbeo users put a simple restaurant meal at about 3,800 kronur, roughly 23 pounds, and a cappuccino at around five. The city itself is done in two or three days; many people use it as a base for tours to waterfalls, glaciers and the northern lights, and out there the weather sets the rules. The FCDO lists the sea, cliff edges and hot springs among the most common causes of accidents.

Whatever else you do, go swimming. Council pools cost 1,500 kronur, open at 6.30am and are where locals talk in the hot tubs. In early November Iceland Airwaves fills the city's venues with gigs.

## Who it's for

- First-time solo travellers who want somewhere small and very safe
- LGBTQ+ travellers heading for the top-rated country in the Spartacus Index
- Anyone after wild landscapes on organised day tours from the city
- People who love geothermal pools and hot tubs

## Who it's not for

- Tight budgets
- Anyone wanting big, varied nightlife year-round
- Inexperienced winter drivers planning to self-drive in snow and wind
- Travellers staying more than three days without leaving the city

## Where to stay alone

### Miðborg (centre, 101)

- Pro: Everything on foot, bars and restaurants close by, and pick-up stops for tours and the Flybus.
- Con: Higher prices and weekend noise, when bars stay open late.
- At night: The FCDO notes petty theft and antisocial behaviour around downtown bars. Otherwise it is quiet.
- Price band: high
- Place to stay: Loft HI Hostel, Bankastræti 7: dorms and private rooms, rooftop terrace, bar, live music and quizzes
- Place to stay: KEX Hostel, Skúlagata 28: dorms and private rooms, bar open until 11pm

### Laugardalur

- Pro: Green and quiet, next to Laugardalslaug, the city's largest pool, and about 25 minutes' walk from the centre along the waterfront.
- Con: Far from the bars, so evenings mean a walk or a bus.
- At night: Calm. The seafront path is lit but windy in winter.
- Price band: mid
- Place to stay: Dalur HI Hostel, Sundlaugavegur 34: dorms and private rooms, café-bar, tour pick-ups at the door

### Vesturbær

- Pro: A residential area west of the centre, with Vesturbæjarlaug pool and the Grandi harbour food hall.
- Con: Few budget beds and little nightlife.
- At night: Very quiet.
- Price band: mid

## How to meet people

- **Nights at Loft HI Hostel**: Live music, karaoke, pub quizzes, food pop-ups and a daily happy hour. It draws locals as well as travellers, which is not a given in Reykjavík. (Bankastræti 7)
- **The bar at KEX**: The first-floor bar is open to non-guests until 11pm. An easy place to sit alone with a beer. (Until 11pm; Skúlagata 28)
- **Kikioke at Kiki**: Free karaoke at the city's best-known queer bar on Laugavegur. Downstairs at Bar 22 there is karaoke on Tuesdays too. (Thursdays 9.30pm at Kiki, Tuesdays 9pm at Bar 22; Laugavegur 22; Free)
- **Council swimming pools**: Visit Reykjavík describes them as social hubs, with older locals in the morning hot tubs discussing the news and the weather. Sit in a hot pot and ask about the weather; it works. (1,500 ISK)
- **Samflot guided floating**: Evening floating sessions in the pool with kit provided, for the price of entry. From 1 November at Árbæjarlaug on the first Wednesday of each month. (8.30pm)

## Things to do alone

- **Laugardalslaug and the other pools**: Eight council pools, open on weekdays from 6.30am to 10pm. Hot tubs usually sit between 38 and 40 degrees. A full naked shower before you go in is mandatory. (1,500 ISK, or 2,770 with towel and swimsuit)
- **Hallgrímskirkja tower**: For a small fee a lift takes you up the church tower, visible from almost anywhere in the city, for a view over the rooftops.
- **Iceland Airwaves**: A music festival across the city's venues, from 4 to 8 November 2026. A good excuse for a solo trip at the start of winter.
- **Day trips with Safetravel**: Before any trip out of town, file a travel plan with Safetravel and install the app, which shares your location with 112. The weather changes fast.
- **The seafront walk to Harpa**: The Sæbraut path leads to Harpa concert hall and the Sun Voyager sculpture. On your own, it is the simplest walk in town.

## Eating alone

- **Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur**: The Tryggvagata hot dog stand, open since 1937. Two minutes standing at the counter, and the cheapest meal in the centre. (Sunday-Wednesday 9am-1am; Tryggvagata)
- **Grandi Mathöll**: A food hall in the Grandi harbour area with several stalls and shared tables. (Daily 11am-9pm; Grandi, old harbour)
- **Café-bar at Dalur HI Hostel**: Coffee, Icelandic craft beer and communal spaces designed for meeting other travellers, next to Laugardalslaug. (Sundlaugavegur 34)

## At night

- Going out: Laugavegur and the streets around it for bars, Kiki and Bar 22 for the queer scene, and Gaukurinn for live music and drag.
- Getting back: The centre is walkable. Night buses cost 690 kronur a ride, and licensed taxis work around the clock.
- Avoid: Leaving bags and phones on tables in busy downtown bars, where the FCDO notes petty theft. In winter, long walks along the seafront in strong wind.

## Safety

### General

The FCDO rates crime as low, with some petty theft and antisocial behaviour around downtown bars. Italy's foreign ministry agrees and asks visitors to follow official updates on eruptions as well as weather and roads.

### Women

Iceland is second of 181 in the Women, Peace and Security Index 2025/26. For a woman alone the more concrete risk is outside the city: leave a travel plan with Safetravel.

### LGBTQ+

The FCDO confirms same-sex relationships are legal and recognised in law. There is no gay district, but there are dedicated venues on Laugavegur.

### Trans people

Iceland has allowed legal gender change by self-determination since 2019, according to the ILGA World Database. Some pools have gender-neutral changing rooms and single showers, and Samtökin '78 offers free counselling. This section needs review by a trans person before publication.

### At night

The centre is small and busy at weekends. In winter it gets dark early and the wind can be fierce, so dress as if you might be waiting for a bus.

### Common scams

None of the official sources we checked flags a typical scam. Book tours only with operators licensed by the Icelandic Tourist Board, as Visit Reykjavík advises.

### Emergency numbers

- Emergency: 112

### Hospitals

- Landspítali, Hringbraut, 101 Reykjavík
- HSS, Skólavegur 6, Reykjanesbær (near Keflavík airport)

## LGBTQ+

- Same-sex relationships are legal
- Marriage: legal since 2010
- Legal gender recognition: self-determination since 2019
- Spartacus Gay Travel Index 2026: #1
- ILGA-Europe Rainbow Map 2026: 85.56%
- Checked on 2026-11-02

Iceland is first in the Spartacus Gay Travel Index 2026 and third of 49 in the Rainbow Map 2026 with 85.56%. Same-sex marriage has been legal since 2010, and since 2015 the Church of Iceland has married couples of any gender. Reykjavík is too small for a gay district; the venues are on Laugavegur.

Areas: Laugavegur, Miðborg

- **Kiki Queer Bar**: The city's best-known queer bar, with drag shows and karaoke on Thursdays. (Laugavegur 22)
- **Bar 22**: Downstairs from Kiki, with karaoke on Tuesdays and queer DJ nights. (Laugavegur 22)
- **Gaukurinn**: A queer hangout with live music, karaoke nights and drag shows.

- **Samtökin '78**: The national queer association, with free confidential counselling, support groups and legal advice. (Suðurgata 3, office Monday to Thursday 1pm-4pm) https://samtokin78.is/en/

## Dating

- App: Tinder, Bumble, Hinge, Grindr
- Norms: For a first date, a café, a bar on Laugavegur or even the pool, which Visit Reykjavík mentions as a popular spot for dates.
- Safety: Meet in public. There is no legal risk attached to your orientation. If a date involves a trip out of town, tell someone where you are going.

- In town: The centre is walkable. Strætó buses cost 690 kronur a ride: tap a contactless card on board and, using the same card, you never pay for more than three rides a day or nine a week. Night buses also cost 690 kronur.
- App: Klappið, Safetravel, Strætó

## Frequently asked questions

### Is Reykjavík safe for solo travellers?

Iceland is first of 163 in the Global Peace Index 2026 and second of 181 in the Women, Peace and Security Index 2025/26. The FCDO calls crime low, with some petty theft and antisocial behaviour around downtown bars. The bigger risks are outside the city, from weather and terrain.

### How do I get from Keflavík airport if I land late at night?

The Flybus leaves 30 to 60 minutes after every arrival, day or night, and reaches BSÍ terminal in Reykjavík in about 45 minutes. Fares start at 3,999 kronur, roughly 25 pounds.

### How expensive is Reykjavík?

Very. Numbeo users put a meal in an inexpensive restaurant at about 3,800 kronur, around 23 pounds, and a cappuccino at 825. The bargains are council pools at 1,500 kronur and buses at 690 a ride, capped at three rides a day.

### What do I need to enter Iceland from the UK?

Iceland is in the Schengen area, so the 90-in-180-day rule, Schengen passport rules and the EU Entry/Exit System apply. Read the current FCDO entry page before you book.

### Is Reykjavík good for LGBTQ+ travellers?

Yes. Iceland is first in the Spartacus Gay Travel Index 2026 and third in the Rainbow Map 2026. The city is too small for a gay district, but there are queer bars on Laugavegur and a Pride every summer since 1999.

### Do I really have to shower naked at the pool?

Yes, a full wash without your swimsuit is compulsory before you get in. Changing rooms are split by gender, and some pools also have gender-neutral changing rooms and single showers.

### What should I do before heading out of the city alone?

File a travel plan with Safetravel and install its app, which can send your GPS position to 112. The FCDO notes that getting too close to the sea, cliff edges and hot springs causes many accidents.
