## The short verdict

Yes, if you want a city where talking to strangers in a pub is normal. Dublin has live traditional music every day, central hostels with female-only dorms and 24-hour buses from the airport. The downsides are cost, with a cheap meal at around 20 euros, and pickpocketing in Temple Bar and the north inner city.

- Best season: May–Sept
- Daily budget for one: 85–320 EUR (mid 180)

Dublin is where being on your own matters least, because the pub exists to make conversation. At the Cobblestone in Smithfield there is live traditional music every single day, from mid-afternoon at weekends, and a pint at the bar is the quickest route into a chat. The central hostels are used to people travelling solo and have female-only dorms.

The catches are in your wallet and on the street. If you are coming from London the prices will not shock you, but anyone arriving from southern Europe will notice: Numbeo users put a cheap meal at around 20 euros. Italy's foreign ministry reports thefts and assaults on tourists in the centre, Temple Bar and the north inner city, especially in the evening. Temple Bar is worth walking through, less so at 2am.

The rest works in your favour. The national museums are free, Leap Card travel is capped at 6 euros a day, and buses run between the airport and the centre all night. Pack a waterproof whatever the season.

## Who it's for

- People who want to meet others in the pub over live music
- First-time solo travellers who want an English-speaking city close to home
- LGBTQ+ travellers looking for a community centre with groups by age and identity
- Fans of free museums and coastal day trips by train

## Who it's not for

- Tight accommodation budgets
- Anyone chasing sun and warmth
- People who want nights out that do not revolve around alcohol

## Where to stay alone

### City centre, around O'Connell Bridge

- Pro: Walking distance to Temple Bar, Grafton Street and the museums, with airport buses and Store Street Garda station nearby.
- Con: Italy's foreign ministry flags pickpocketing and bag-snatching in the centre and Temple Bar, especially in the evening.
- At night: Busy until late. Head home along the main streets.
- Price band: mid
- Place to stay: Abbey Court Hostel, O'Connell Bridge: six-bed female ensuite dorm, twelve-bed dorms with a female option, 24-hour reception

### Smithfield

- Pro: Calmer than Temple Bar, with the Cobblestone's music sessions and the Jameson distillery next door.
- Con: Some side streets empty out at night, and the area falls within the north inner city the Italian advice flags.
- At night: Lively around the square, quieter on the side streets.
- Price band: mid
- Place to stay: Generator Dublin, Smithfield Square: female-only dorms, private rooms and a bar

### North inner city, around Capel Street

- Pro: Capel Street is home to Outhouse, the LGBTQ+ centre, and sits between Smithfield and O'Connell Street.
- Con: One of the areas Italy's foreign ministry flags for evening petty crime.
- At night: Busy on the main streets. After midnight, take a night bus or a taxi.
- Price band: low
- Place to stay: Latroupe Jacobs Inn: four and ten-bed female dorms, daily events

- **Meet and greet at Jacobs Inn**: The hostel bar is the meeting point, with a meet and greet and live music, plus parties and city tours.
- **Social groups at Outhouse**: The Capel Street LGBTQ+ centre has a café open to all and weekly groups, including a café for gay men aged 18 to 35, a Sapphic Social, T-Time for trans and non-binary people, and GOLD for over-50s. (Tuesday to Friday 11am-9pm, Saturday 11am-6pm; 105 Capel Street)
- **The bar at Generator Smithfield**: An in-house bar next to the Jameson distillery, an easy place for a first drink with other travellers. (Smithfield Square)

## Things to do alone

- **Free national museums**: The three Dublin branches of the National Museum of Ireland and the National Gallery of Ireland are free. A rainy day fills itself without costing a thing. (Free)
- **Howth and the Cliff Path Loop**: Take the northbound DART to Howth for the weekend market and the cliff path with views back over the city and the Irish Sea. (Market at weekends and on bank holiday Mondays, 10am-5pm)

- **Irish Village Markets**: Pop-up lunchtime street-food markets around the city, from poké to paella. Check their website for that day's location.
- **Dún Laoghaire CoCo Market**: Every Sunday, a DART ride from the centre, hot food stalls and baking by the LexIcon library. (Sundays 10am-4pm; Dún Laoghaire)

## At night

- Going out: Temple Bar for the tourist pubs, Smithfield for trad music, South Great George's Street for The George, Capel Street for Outhouse and the LGBTQ+ community.
- Getting back: Fifteen bus routes run 24 hours a day, and on Friday and Saturday nights twelve Nitelink routes leave the centre for the suburbs, at 2.40 euros.

## Safety

### General

The FCDO advises precautions against bag-snatching and pickpocketing, most of it in larger cities, and says not to carry valuables or large amounts of cash. Italy's foreign ministry flags the airport, public transport and the tourist areas of the centre, Temple Bar and the north inner city. Ireland is fifth in the Global Peace Index 2026.

### Women

Abbey Court, Generator and Jacobs Inn all have female-only dorms. In the evening, stick to main roads and night buses rather than long walks.

### LGBTQ+

Strong legal protections and a visible community. LGBT Ireland runs the national helpline.

### Trans people

Ireland has allowed legal gender recognition by self-determination since 2015, according to the ILGA World Database. TENI supports trans people and their families, and Outhouse runs T-Time for trans and non-binary people. This section needs review by a trans person before publication.

### At night

The 24-hour routes and weekend Nitelinks cover the journey home. Keep an eye on your bag on board.

### Common scams

The most common problem is pickpocketing in crowds. The FCDO also warns never to carry items for anyone else when entering or leaving the country.

### Emergency numbers
