## The short verdict

Yes. Italy works alone, especially by train and in cities whose hostels run nightly events. But the differences matter: Bologna's prices sit close to Milan's, Naples is cheaper but feels less safe at night to Numbeo users, and LGBTQ+ travellers should know Italy is 36th of 49 in ILGA-Europe's Rainbow Map 2026.

- Daily budget for one: 50–200 EUR (mid 115)

Italy is easy to travel alone in, but it is not one country for the purposes of a solo trip. What changes from city to city is the price of a bed, how people feel walking home at night and how much there is to do in the evening without company. Those differences are bigger than most first-time visitors expect.

Trains do the heavy lifting. Italo quotes about three hours from Milan to Rome and under two from Milan to Florence, and on Trenitalia's regional network Italia in Tour gives three journeys over three days for 35 euros, about £29. The Foreign Office's most practical warning is one locals take for granted: transport strikes are announced at short notice, and its 21 October 2026 update flags a national strike on 30 October.

On money and safety the data diverge. In October 2026 Hostelworld dorms started at 22 euros in Bologna and 14 in Naples. Numbeo users score walking alone at night at 39 out of 100 in Bologna and 27.5 in Naples, low in both. That is perception data, not police statistics, and the risk the Foreign Office actually names nationwide is petty theft: pickpocketing, bag-snatching and distraction tricks in centres and on transport.

For LGBTQ+ travellers the legal picture is weaker than in most of Europe, with 35 countries ahead of Italy in ILGA-Europe's 2026 ranking; the section below sets it out.

## Who it's for

- Rail travellers stringing several cities together in a week
- Anyone after hostels with nightly events and women-only dorms
- Off-season travellers using free first Sundays at state museums
- Food-led travellers comfortable eating at a counter alone

## Who it's not for

- Anyone expecting Italy to be cheap everywhere: some dorms top 40 euros
- People who often walk home alone very late without planning the route
- Travellers with fixed plans on announced strike days

## Safety

### General

Italy is 35th of 163 in the Global Peace Index 2026. The Foreign Office flags pickpocketing and bag-snatching in city centres and tourist sites, on transport, at airports and in bars, thefts from parked cars, drink spiking and frequent minor earthquakes. The Phlegraean Fields near Naples have national emergency planning in place.

### Women

Italy's 1522 line for violence and stalking is free and open 24 hours, also via chat and the "1522 chat" app. The Foreign Office warns that bar measures are often stronger than in the UK and that drink-spiking victims have been robbed and sometimes assaulted.

### LGBTQ+

Italy is 36th of 49 in the Rainbow Map 2026. ILGA-Europe notes that the April 2025 Security Decree could allow bans on demonstrations, including Pride events.

### Trans people

In August 2025 the government approved a draft law that would tighten controls on gender-affirming treatment for under-18s; Parliament has yet to consider it. This section needs review by a trans person before publication.

### At night

Cities with nightly hostel events make it easier to go out in company. To get back, use licensed taxis from an official rank, an app or by phone.

### Common scams

Distraction tricks (someone asking for help or directions, or claiming your car has a fault), unlicensed street traders, unlicensed taxis.

### Emergency numbers

- Single emergency number: 112
- Medical emergency: 118
- Violence and stalking line: 1522
- British Embassy Rome, 24/7 for British nationals: +39 06 4220 0001

## LGBTQ+

- Same-sex relationships are legal
- Marriage: not recognised
- Legal gender recognition: court procedure, surgery not required
- Spartacus Gay Travel Index 2026: #59
- ILGA-Europe Rainbow Map 2026: 24.11%
- Checked on 2026-11-02

Italy ranks 36th of 49 countries in ILGA-Europe's Rainbow Map 2026, with a score of 24%, one place lower than the year before; ILGA-Europe says the national government continues to block legal and administrative protections set by regional governments and local courts, and flags a new security law restricting demonstrations as a risk for LGBTI public events. Same-sex couples have been able to form civil unions since 2016 but cannot marry. In 2025 the changes came from judges rather than Parliament: in March the Constitutional Court let single people adopt children from abroad, in May it required both mothers to be recognised where a child was born abroad through assisted reproduction, and in July it extended mandatory parental leave to the non-biological mother. Italy has legislation criminalising surrogacy even when carried out abroad. In December 2025 Amnesty International noted no progress on a law against hate crimes based on sexual orientation and gender identity. In daily life, the big cities have active community centres and June Prides.

## Entry and documents

Italy is in the EU and Schengen; check passport validity and the Entry/Exit System rules on the official UK government page before you travel.

## Culture and customs

Police can ask for ID at any time, so carry photo ID. In some towns sitting on monument steps, or eating and drinking near major churches and monuments, can be an offence, and bathing in fountains is banned in many places including Rome and Florence. Public urination can cost up to 10,000 euros. Buying from unlicensed street traders is illegal. On Capri, single-use plastic can mean a fine of up to 500 euros. Taking sand, shells or pebbles from beaches is illegal, and driving into a ZTL without a permit brings a fine. Pedestrians can be fined for crossing within 100 metres of a crossing without using it.
