## The short verdict

Yes, for a solo weekend built around food: the centre is walkable, the Mercato delle Erbe food hall serves dinner until midnight and one hostel runs a free event every night. The catches are price, with dorms from 22 euros, and how safe people feel after dark: Numbeo users rate walking alone at night low.

- Best season: Sept–Oct
- Daily budget for one: 75–220 EUR (mid 130)

Bologna is the Italian city where eating alone takes the least effort. The food hall at the Mercato delle Erbe on Via Ugo Bassi serves dinner until midnight Monday to Saturday, and the centre is compact enough to walk back from almost anywhere. Stay at Ostello Bello on Via del Porto and there is a free event for guests every evening, no sign-up needed.

Two problems are worth knowing before you book. The first is price. Hostelworld dorms start at 22 euros and some go above 40, and Numbeo users put a cheap meal at 20 euros, about £17. The second is how safe people feel at night. Numbeo users score walking alone after dark at 39 out of 100, a low figure. It is crowdsourced perception rather than police data, but it supports a simple habit: at night, stick to busy streets and keep your phone out of sight.

From the airport the Marconi Express monorail gets you to the station in about seven minutes, which makes even a short break workable.

## Who it's for

- Food-focused travellers who want to eat alone without fuss
- Anyone after a hostel with nightly events and women-only dorms
- Rail travellers moving between Milan, Florence and Rome
- LGBTQ+ travellers looking for an active community centre

## Who it's not for

- Tight budgets: dorms start at 22 euros
- Anyone set on climbing the Asinelli tower right now
- People who often walk home alone very late and want reassurance from the data

## Where to stay alone

### Historic centre

- Pro: Everything on foot. Il Castello Hostel Boutique is under 300 metres from the centre and the Mercato delle Erbe at Via Ugo Bassi 23 is close by.
- Con: High prices, and during Arte Fiera accommodation costs more.
- At night: Busy streets at weekends. The Foreign Office advice on pickpockets and drinks applies.
- Price band: high
- Place to stay: Il Castello Hostel Boutique, dorms from about 22 euros

### University area and Via Irnerio

- Pro: Dopa Hostel at Via Irnerio 41 has 4, 6 and 8-bed dorms with breakfast included.
- Con: Dopa lists no events, so you will find company elsewhere. Dorms from about 38 euros.
- At night: The city-wide Numbeo night score (39 out of 100) argues for main streets on the way back.
- Price band: mid
- Place to stay: Dopa Hostel, Via Irnerio 41, 4, 6 and 8-bed dorms

### Via del Porto and Via Don Minzoni

- Pro: Home to Ostello Bello, about 15 minutes' walk from Piazza Maggiore, and the Cassero at Via Don Minzoni 18.
- Con: Ostello Bello is among the priciest on Hostelworld, dorms from about 44 euros.
- At night: The hostel's reception and bar are open 24 hours, useful if you come back late.
- Price band: high
- Place to stay: Ostello Bello Bologna, Via del Porto 6, with women-only shared rooms and 24-hour reception

### Outside the city walls

- Pro: Combo Bologna, about 2 km out, has dorms from about 27.50 euros.
- Con: You need the bus into town; a 75-minute ticket is 2.30 euros.
- At night: Late at night a licensed taxi or the bus beats walking.
- Price band: mid
- Place to stay: Combo Bologna, dorms from about 27.50 euros

- **Centre walking tour**: Bologna Welcome's official tour, two hours, 18 euros, free with the Bologna Welcome Card, in English on Fridays and weekends this season. (18 EUR)

## Eating alone

- **Mercato delle Erbe**: Market stalls from 7:00 to 19:30, with the food hall open for lunch (12:00-15:30) and dinner (18:00-24:00). Some stalls close for holidays in summer. (Via Ugo Bassi 23)
- **Ostello Bello's kitchen**: Guests have a shared kitchen at all times, with free pasta plus fruit and vegetables. Cooking alongside others is the cheapest way not to dine alone. (Via del Porto 6; Free for guests)
- **Breakfast at Dopa**: Breakfast is included, and in a hostel without events it is when people talk. (Via Irnerio 41)
- **A benchmark bill**: Numbeo users put a cheap meal at 20 euros and a cappuccino at 2. Lunch at the market and dinner at the hostel bring the budget down sharply. (20 EUR)

## At night

- Going out: The Cassero for LGBTQIA+ parties, the Mercato delle Erbe until midnight, and the Ostello Bello bar, open all night for guests.
- Getting back: The centre is walkable, but given the Numbeo night score choose busy streets. On TPER buses you can tap a contactless card on the validator at the standard fare. To and from the airport after midnight there is bus Q.
- Avoid: Unlicensed taxis and drinks from strangers. The Foreign Office also notes that bar measures in Italy are often stronger than in the UK.

## Safety

### General

Numbeo users (206 contributions) give Bologna a safety index of 51 out of 100. For Italy the Foreign Office flags pickpocketing and bag-snatching in city centres and tourist sites, on transport, at airports and in bars, often with distraction techniques. Protests can start with little warning.

### Women

Bologna's perception score is low, 39 out of 100 for walking alone at night. The Foreign Office warns about drink spiking, with victims robbed and sometimes assaulted. Italy's free 24-hour violence and stalking line is 1522, also available by chat.

### LGBTQ+

The Cassero on Via Don Minzoni is the city's reference point, with a dedicated line for anyone facing discrimination or violence (+39 388 0925933) and counselling and legal desks.

### Trans people

We have no Bologna-specific data. Nationally the Rainbow Map 2026 notes a government bill (August 2025) that would tighten controls on gender-affirming care for under-18s. This section needs review by a trans person before publication.

### At night

The centre is small and walkable, but stick to busy streets. After midnight bus Q serves the airport.

### Common scams

Distraction thefts, unlicensed street traders (buying from them is illegal and can mean a fine), unlicensed taxis.

### Emergency numbers

- Single emergency number: 112
- Medical emergency: 118
- Violence and stalking line: 1522
- FCDO London, 24 hours: +44 20 7008 5000
