## The short verdict

It depends how much perceived risk bothers you. Naples is cheap, eating alone standing at a counter is normal and central hostels put on something every night. But Numbeo users score walking alone at night at 27.5 out of 100, the lowest of any city in this guide. It works if you stay central and head back early or in company.

- Best season: Apr
- Daily budget for one: 50–180 EUR (mid 100)

Naples is the Italian city where eating alone costs least and feels least awkward. Da Michele, on Via Cesare Sersale since 1870, has four pizzas on the menu and a long wait it calls part of the ritual. Sorbillo on Via dei Tribunali also sells Zia Esterina's fried pizza to eat on the street. A dorm bed starts at 14 euros, about £12.

Then there is the reputation, which is worth separating from the evidence. The figure most quoted online comes from Numbeo users: 27.5 out of 100 for walking alone at night and 64.2 for worry about mugging. It is crowdsourced perception, not police data, but it should not be brushed aside. The UK Foreign Office, for Italy as a whole, names pickpocketing and bag-snatching in centres and on transport as the main risk, often using distraction.

In practice: stay central, keep your phone in your pocket, split your cash, and at night head back with company or along busy streets. Do that and Naples is an easy city to be alone among people, helped by hostels that run something every evening.

The Phlegraean Fields near the city have national emergency planning and regular tremors, which the Foreign Office mentions; worth knowing if you stay in that area.

## Who it's for

- Anyone who wants to eat well cheaply, alone at the counter if need be
- Travellers after a hostel with nightly events and women-only dorms

- Fans of loud, crowded cities

## Who it's not for

- Anyone who often walks home alone late and is easily unsettled
- People looking for quiet and order
- Those who don't want to think about where their phone and wallet are

## Where to stay alone

### Historic centre and the Decumani

- Pro: Sorbillo is on Via dei Tribunali and Arcigay on Vico San Geronimo. Tric Trac Hostel and 6 Small Rooms are a few hundred metres from Hostelworld's centre point.
- Con: Narrow, crowded streets, exactly the setting for the pickpocketing the Foreign Office describes.
- At night: In the evening keep belongings in sight and stick to lanes with people in them.
- Price band: low
- Place to stay: Tric Trac Hostel, dorms from about 23 euros
- Place to stay: 6 Small Rooms, dorms from about 23 euros

### Toledo and Via dei Fiorentini

- Pro: Ostello Bello Napoli at Via dei Fiorentini 10 has women-only dorms, 24-hour reception, nightly events and a rooftop terrace looking over the Quartieri Spagnoli.
- Con: Touristy, with central prices.
- At night: The hostel makes a good place to head back to because reception never closes.
- Price band: mid
- Place to stay: Ostello Bello Napoli, Via dei Fiorentini 10, dorms from about 20 euros

### Materdei

- Pro: Lower prices about a kilometre from the centre. Safestay Naples Materdei has dorms from about 20 euros and private rooms from about 23.50.
- Con: Further from bars and restaurants; a licensed taxi back is the sensible option at night.
- At night: Use a licensed taxi for late returns.
- Price band: low
- Place to stay: Safestay Naples Materdei, dorms from about 20 euros

## How to meet people

- **Ostello Bello evenings**: A different activity every night, quiz, darts, beer pong, karaoke, plus a weekly cooking class. No sign-up needed. In summer the rooftop becomes the hostel's social hub. (Every evening; Via dei Fiorentini 10)
- **FreeID, the queer social bar**: Run by Antinoo Arcigay Napoli; events usually need an Arcigay membership card. The 17th season of Poetè, a queer literary series, opened here on 3 October 2026.
- **Arcigay Napoli Welcome Day and groups**: Antinoo Arcigay runs a Welcome Day, a youth group and a senior group. The most direct way into the local LGBTQ+ community if you are staying a while. (Vico San Geronimo 19)
- **The queue at Da Michele**: The pizzeria itself calls the long wait part of the experience. In the queue you talk to the people around you more than you would at a table. (Via Cesare Sersale 1)

## Things to do alone

- **Pompeii for the day**: November to March the park opens 9:00 to 17:00, last entry 15:30. Pompei Express 20 euros, Pompei+ with the suburban villas and shuttle 25 euros, 2 euros for EU citizens aged 18 to 24. Free on the first Sunday of the month. (20-25 EUR)
- **Free first Sundays**: On the first Sunday of every month Italy's state museums and archaeological parks are free. Bookings, where required, go through the Musei Italiani app. (Free)
- **Napoli Pride**: The late-June march, on 27 June in 2026. The name is a trademark of Antinoo Arcigay Napoli. (June)
- **Poetè and KIU, Napoli Queer Festival**: Arcigay Napoli's cultural programme: the Poetè literary series at FreeID and the KIU festival.
- **Hostel cooking class**: Ostello Bello holds a weekly cooking class. You learn a dish and eat it with the people who made it.

## Eating alone

- **L'Antica Pizzeria da Michele**: On Via Cesare Sersale since 1870, with just four pizzas on the menu. The pizzeria describes the long wait as a ritual, so go with time to spare. (Via Cesare Sersale 1)
- **Sorbillo and Zia Esterina's fried pizza**: The original pizzeria is on Via dei Tribunali. To eat standing up, Zia Esterina Sorbillo's fried pizza has outlets around the city. (Via dei Tribunali)
- **Ostello Bello kitchen and rooftop**: A weekly cooking class and a rooftop where you eat with other guests. (Via dei Fiorentini 10)
- **A benchmark bill**: Numbeo users put a cheap meal at 15 euros (about £12.50), a half-litre of beer at 5 and a cappuccino at 2.07. (15 EUR)

## At night

- Going out: The historic centre and Toledo are the handiest bases for going out. For LGBTQ+ travellers the reference point is Arcigay's FreeID. At Ostello Bello the evening starts at the bar and on the rooftop.
- Getting back: We could not find official, current last-train times for the metro and funiculars, so check the app or at the station before you go out. If you are back late, take a licensed taxi from an official rank, an app or by phone.
- Avoid: Carrying all your cash in one place, leaving your phone on an outdoor table, accepting drinks from strangers. The Foreign Office adds distraction tricks such as someone asking for directions or help.

## Safety
