## The short verdict

It depends on your budget and where you sleep. Amsterdam is small, easy by bike and the airport train runs through the night, but a cheap meal costs around 20 euros and the centre has the worst pickpocketing in the country. It works well for museums, cycling and queer nightlife, less well if every pound counts.

- Best season: May–Sept
- Daily budget for one: 95–330 EUR (mid 190)

Amsterdam on your own is easy to manage and hard on the wallet. The centre is compact enough to cover by bike, airport trains keep going through the night and English is everywhere: the Netherlands tops the EF English Proficiency Index 2025. The sting is the bill. Numbeo users put a cheap meal at about 20 euros, which is London money rather than Berlin money. Even a quirky budget option like Hotel Not Hotel starts at 75 euros a room.

Treat the centre with some care. The FCDO says pickpocketing and bag-snatching are common around Centraal and on the trains and trams to Schiphol, and warns of fake plain-clothes police asking to inspect your cash and cards. Italy's foreign ministry calls central Amsterdam the highest-crime area in the country. For a good night's sleep, base yourself in Oost, Oud-West or Noord.

What makes it worth it is how much sits within a few kilometres: the Rijksmuseum, the Anne Frank House, street markets, queer bars that have been open since 1927, and a free ferry to Noord that keeps running all night. From October to April expect rain and early darkness. Build your days around museum slots booked ahead.

## Who it's for

- Confident cyclists who want a compact city
- LGBTQ+ travellers looking for long-running bars and real support services
- Museum lovers who do not mind booking timed entry
- Late arrivals who want a train from the airport at any hour

## Who it's not for

- Tight budgets that rule out dorm beds
- Anyone who wants quiet in the old centre on a Saturday night
- Nervous cyclists who would rather not share the road with trams
- Anyone expecting to smoke cannabis in the street without a fine

## Where to stay alone

### Centrum (around Nieuwendijk)

- Pro: Minutes from Centraal, and you can walk back from almost anywhere.
- Con: The worst area in the country for petty crime according to Italy's foreign ministry, with crowds and noise at weekends.
- At night: Busy, but keep out of dark alleys late and ignore anyone offering drugs.
- Price band: mid
- Place to stay: The Flying Pig Downtown, Nieuwendijk 100: dorms and private rooms, a bar and activities every night

### Oud-West and Vondelpark

- Pro: Close to Museumplein and Leidseplein, with the park on the doorstep and Foodhallen for dinner.
- Con: Leidseplein is loud at night, and the park is best avoided after dark.
- At night: Quiet residential streets, with trams from Centraal to Leidseplein for the trip back.
- Price band: mid
- Place to stay: Stayokay Amsterdam Vondelpark, Zandpad 5: dorms and private rooms all with en suite, plus game and music nights

### Oost (Oosterpark)

- Pro: A lived-in district with fewer tourists, OLVG Oost hospital nearby and quick trams to the centre.
- Con: Little nightlife of its own, so evenings out mean heading back into town.
- At night: Calm. The ride home from the centre is short by tram or bike.
- Price band: mid
- Place to stay: Generator Amsterdam, Mauritskade 57: female-only dorms and private rooms overlooking Oosterpark

### Noord

- Pro: More space, slightly lower prices and the free ferry from Centraal, which runs to Buiksloterweg through the night.
- Con: You need to plan your way back by ferry or metro, and some areas are empty after dark.
- At night: The Centraal to Buiksloterweg ferry runs all night. Italy's foreign ministry advises extra care in port areas at night.
- Price band: low
- Place to stay: ClinkNOORD, in a former 1920s laboratory in Noord
- Place to stay: BUNK Amsterdam, in a converted church, with private pods

## How to meet people

- **Nights at The Flying Pig Downtown**: Activities every night, plus a busy bar and tours run by the hostel. The crowd is young and goes out a lot, so it is not the place for an early night. (Every evening; Nieuwendijk 100, Centrum)
- **Stayokay Vondelpark evenings**: Game nights and singer-songwriter sets in the hostel bar, plus Vondelpark clean-ups with local residents, which is a different way to strike up a conversation. (Zandpad 5, Vondelpark)
- **Pride Night at Pathé**: A different LGBTQI+ film on the first Wednesday of every month. A film and then a drink is an easy evening out on your own. (First Wednesday of the month)
- **Sundays at De Trut**: The volunteer-run queer disco every Sunday night, one of the most relaxed nights on the scene. (Sunday nights)
- **Bike hire and guided rides**: Bike hire averages 10 euros a day and the city has up to 400 kilometres of cycle paths. A guided bike tour on day one gets you riding in a group while you learn the rules. (About 10 EUR a day for hire)

## Things to do alone

- **Rijksmuseum**: Open every day from 9am to 5pm, public holidays included. You must book an entry time, even with a Museumkaart. (Daily 9am-5pm)
- **Anne Frank House**: Entry is by timed online ticket only. Tickets are released every Tuesday at 10am CET for visits six weeks later, and they go quickly, so set a reminder.
- **Ferry to Noord and NDSM**: The ferries from Centraal are free for foot passengers and cyclists. The Buiksloterweg boat goes every few minutes and through the night, the NDSM boat takes you to the old shipyard. (Free)
- **Rooftop sauna at Volkshotel**: The Volkshotel in Oost has a barrel sauna on the roof with a view over the city. An hour to yourself after a day in the saddle. (Oost)
- **Amsterdam Dance Event**: The October electronic music festival, with more than 2,500 artists and about 395,000 clubbers. In 2026 it ran from 21 to 25 October. Beds cost far more that week.

## Eating alone

- **Foodhallen**: A covered food hall in a former tram depot with 19 stalls. Pick a plate and sit at the shared tables. Open daily from noon to 11pm. (Daily 12-11pm; Oud-West)
- **Albert Cuypmarkt**: De Pijp's street market, trading since 1905. Eating standing at a stall is the simplest solo lunch in town. Closed on Sundays. (Monday to Saturday, Monday 9.30am-5pm; De Pijp)
- **Lunchroom Downtown**: LGBTQ+-friendly lunch spot on Reguliersdwarsstraat, good for a solo bite while watching the street. (Reguliersdwarsstraat)

## At night

- Going out: Leidseplein and Rembrandtplein for bars and clubs, Reguliersdwarsstraat for queer bars, and the Red Light District for its pubs, where at weekends bars close at 2am and stop letting people in an hour earlier.
- Getting back: NS night trains run every night between Rotterdam, Schiphol, Amsterdam Centraal and Utrecht, roughly hourly and at daytime fares. The Buiksloterweg ferry runs all night. For the airport there is also the hourly N97 bus.
- Avoid: Quiet, dark alleys late at night, anyone selling drugs on the street, and the port areas after dark. Do not fall asleep on public transport, especially on trains to Schiphol.

## Safety

### General

The FCDO says pickpocketing and bag-snatching are common in central Amsterdam and around Centraal, with gangs working the trains and trams to and from Schiphol. Italy's foreign ministry describes central Amsterdam as the highest-crime area in the Netherlands.

### Women

The FCDO highlights drink spiking as a particular risk for young women and solo travellers. During major events I amsterdam points to ride services such as Diva Ride, which offers a female-driver option. Generator has female-only dorms.

### LGBTQ+

Roze in Blauw is a police network for LGBTQI+ victims of discrimination and hate crime, and the regional Meldpunt Discriminatie takes reports. Pink Point next to the Homomonument gives information and contacts.

### Trans people

In the Netherlands legal gender can be changed with an expert's statement and no surgery requirement since 2014, according to the ILGA World Database. Transgender Netwerk Nederland offers information and support groups. This section needs review by a trans person before publication.

### At night

The centre stays busy late. Stick to main streets, stay awake on public transport and keep away from the canal edge if you have been drinking: the FCDO notes people drown in the canals every year.

### Common scams

Fake plain-clothes police asking for cash or cards as part of a supposed counterfeit investigation. If in doubt, call 0900-8844. At the airport, ignore drivers touting for rides inside the terminal.

### Emergency numbers

- Emergency: 112
- Police non-emergency: 0900-8844
- Tourist doctor: +31 20 427 5011
- Roze in Blauw (police, LGBTQI+): +31 88 169 1234

### Hospitals

- OLVG Oost, Oosterpark 9, 24-hour emergency department
- OLVG West, Jan Tooropstraat 164, 24-hour emergency department

## LGBTQ+

- Same-sex relationships are legal
- Marriage: legal since 2001
- Legal gender recognition: expert statement, no surgery (2014)
- Spartacus Gay Travel Index 2026: #15
- ILGA-Europe Rainbow Map 2026: 63.82%
- Checked on 2026-11-02

The Netherlands is 13th of 49 in ILGA-Europe's Rainbow Map 2026 and 15th in the Spartacus Gay Travel Index 2026. In Amsterdam the scene is concentrated in the centre, around Reguliersdwarsstraat, Zeedijk, Rembrandtplein and Utrechtsestraat, and the city hosted WorldPride in 2026.

Areas: Reguliersdwarsstraat, Zeedijk, Rembrandtplein, Utrechtsestraat

- **Café 't Mandje**: Open since 1927, and listed by I amsterdam among the most welcoming pubs on the scene for locals and visitors alike.
- **Café Saarein**: One of the main bars for the lesbian scene, alongside Bar Buka.
- **De Lellebel**: The only drag café in the Netherlands, known for its lip-sync shows. (Utrechtsestraat)
- **Bar Bario**: An inclusive bar and creative space focused on BPOC, trans and queer communities.

- **COC Amsterdam**: The city's long-standing LGBTQI+ organisation, with programmes for young people and seniors.
- **Pink Point**: The official volunteer-run LGBTQI+ information kiosk beside the Homomonument. https://www.pinkpoint.org/
- **Transgender Netwerk Nederland**: Information, support groups and resources for trans and non-binary people.

## Dating

- App: Tinder, Bumble, Hinge, Grindr, HER
- Norms: For a first date, a coffee or a drink somewhere central is the simplest choice, not least because you can leave by tram or bike whenever you like.
- Safety: Meet in public and keep your drink in sight, given the drink-spiking risk the FCDO flags. There is no legal risk attached to your orientation.

- From the airport, also at night: At night NS trains from Schiphol to Amsterdam Centraal run roughly hourly, at daytime fares. By day there are eight an hour taking 17 minutes, 4.90 euros one way. The N97 bus runs hourly towards Leidseplein and Museumplein from stop B17. An official taxi usually costs 35 to 55 euros.
- In town: Tap in and out on every tram, bus, metro and train with a contactless card (OVpay). On GVB lines you pay no more than 10.50 euros a day. On a bike keep to the right-hand lane, cross tram rails at a sharp angle and use lights after dark, which is the law.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is Amsterdam safe for solo women?

The main risks are theft and spiked drinks. The FCDO flags drink spiking as a particular risk for young women and solo travellers, and warns that thieves work in gangs on trains and trams to and from Schiphol. Keep your drink with you and do not doze off on public transport.

### How expensive is Amsterdam for one person?

Noticeably more than Berlin. Numbeo users put a meal in an inexpensive restaurant at about 20 euros, roughly 17 pounds at October 2026 rates. Contactless travel on GVB lines is capped at 10.50 euros a day.

### How do I get from Schiphol into Amsterdam late at night?

NS night trains run every night between Schiphol and Amsterdam Centraal, roughly hourly and at daytime fares. The N97 Niteliner bus also runs hourly to Leidseplein and Museumplein.

### What do UK travellers need to enter the Netherlands?

No visa for short stays within the Schengen limit, but your passport must meet Schengen rules and the EU Entry/Exit System may take your fingerprints and photo on arrival. Read the current FCDO entry page before you book rather than relying on a summary.

### Is Amsterdam good for LGBTQ+ travellers?

Yes, with long-running bars and dedicated support, including the Pink Point information kiosk by the Homomonument and Roze in Blauw, a police network for LGBTQI+ victims of discrimination. Pride 2027 runs from 31 July to 8 August, with the Canal Parade on 7 August.

### Can I smoke cannabis on the street?

No. Since 2023 smoking cannabis in public has been banned in the old centre, including the Red Light District, Nieuwmarkt and Dam Square, with possible fines of 100 euros. Drinking alcohol is also banned in most public places in the centre.

### Do I need to carry ID?

Yes. Anyone aged 14 or over must be able to show ID at all times, and the FCDO says British nationals should use their passport. The fine for not doing so is 100 euros.
