## The short verdict

Yes, especially for a first trip alone. A handful of Baixa hostels are built around solo guests, with shared dinners and women-only dorms, and the metro runs from the airport until 1am. It is no longer cheap, though: the tourist tax is 4 euros a night and dorm beds start around 20 euros. Light sleepers should stay well away from Cais do Sodré.

- Best season: May–Jul
- Daily budget for one: 65–185 EUR (mid 130)

Lisbon is the European capital where you are least likely to eat dinner alone, even if you arrive knowing nobody. That is not a mood, it is a business model. Within a few streets of Baixa there are hostels designed for solo guests. Goodmorning Hostel on Praça dos Restauradores turns away families and big groups and sells a day package of dinners and nights out. Home Lisbon Hostel cooks a family-style dinner you book at reception. For a first trip alone, that alone justifies the flight.

The catch is money. Since September 2024 the city charges 4 euros per person per night for the first seven nights, and in late October a dorm bed still starts around 20 euros on Hostelworld. A well-reviewed hostel private room is around 60. If you remember Lisbon as a cheap weekend from London, recalibrate.

Nights are the other weak spot. The metro stops at 1am, and we could not check the Carris night-bus network on the operator's site, so budget for taxis or Bolt. If you plan to stay out, sleep near where you drink. If you plan to sleep, avoid Cais do Sodré.

## Who it's for

- First-time solo travellers who want dinner company without hunting for it
- Women who want a women-only dorm in the centre
- Anyone with three or four days who wants Sintra or Cascais by train for 5.10 euros return
- Runners looking for a free group to join on the first evening

## Who it's not for

- Anyone trying to live on under 50 euros a day once the tax and bed prices are in
- People who want to rely on public transport after 1am
- Anyone turning up during Web Summit week in November without a booking
- Travellers after luxury hotels, since this page sticks to hostels and budget private rooms

## Where to stay alone

### Baixa and Restauradores

- Pro: The densest cluster of solo-friendly hostels, on flat streets close to the metro. Free walking tours start within walking distance.
- Con: Busy with visitors at all hours, plenty of tourist menus. Private rooms cost more than further out.
- At night: Streets stay busy until late. The Foreign Office flags pickpocketing at crowded stops and on transport, so keep your phone in a front pocket.
- Price band: mid
- Place to stay: Yes! Lisbon Hostel, Rua de São Julião 148, women-only dorms of 5 and 6 beds, beds from 20 euros on Hostelworld
- Place to stay: Home Lisbon Hostel, Rua de São Nicolau 13, home-cooked dinner on sign-up, privates from 59.85 euros
- Place to stay: Goodmorning Solo Traveller Hostel, Praça dos Restauradores, solo travellers only
- Place to stay: Living Lounge Hostel, Rua do Crucifixo 116, single and double private rooms

### Anjos and Arroios

- Pro: Residential and cheaper, with Anjos metro station about five minutes from the Sant Jordi hostel.
- Con: Less to see on the doorstep, and the old town means a metro ride or an uphill walk.
- At night: Mostly residents, quiet after midnight. Get the last metro before 1am or book a ride.
- Price band: low
- Place to stay: Sant Jordi Hostels Lisbon, Rua do Forno do Tijolo 3, women-only dorms of 4 to 10 beds and single rooms, beds from 19.75 euros on Hostelworld

### Cais do Sodré

- Pro: Trains to Cascais and Carcavelos leave from the station, Time Out Market is next door and bars stay open late.
- Con: Weekend noise into the small hours. Wrong choice if you want an early night.
- At night: Very busy. The Foreign Office singles out nightlife areas late at night as where assaults and drink spiking are most likely.
- Price band: mid
- Place to stay: Sunset Destination Hostel, inside Cais do Sodré station, rooftop pool, beds from 11.83 euros on Hostelworld

### Bairro Alto and Príncipe Real

- Pro: The heart of Lisbon nightlife and of the queer scene, with bars a few doors apart.
- Con: We could not verify a hostel here on an official site. Noisy, and the streets climb.
- At night: Packed between 10pm and 3am at weekends. The same drink precautions apply.
- Price band: mid

## How to meet people

- **Dinners and nights out at Goodmorning Hostel**: Solo travellers only, no families or large groups. The all-inclusive package covers dinners, drinks, activities and nights out, and it is cheaper booked on the hostel's own site. (Praça dos Restauradores; 29 euros a day, 19.50 booked direct)
- **Mamma's Dinner at Home Lisbon Hostel**: A home-cooked dinner for guests. Sign up at reception; the evening event starts at 8pm. The site gives no price or days. (8pm, sign up at reception; Rua de São Nicolau 13, Baixa)
- **Free walking tour from Praça Luís de Camões**: Meet by the statue in Camões Square, where the guide wears a name badge. It lasts two hours forty-five, you pay what you like, and GuruWalk suggests 15 to 50 euros in cash. (10am (October 2026 schedule); Praça Luís de Camões; Pay what you want)
- **Rookie Run Club**: Free group runs on Wednesday evenings from Cais do Sodré station and Saturday mornings from Praça do Comércio. An easy way to have company on night one without a single drink. (Wednesday 7.30pm, Saturday 9am; Cais do Sodré station, Praça do Comércio; Free)
- **Mundo Lingo language exchange**: A free language night at Contra on the Doca de Santo Amaro, with a welcome for newcomers between 9pm and 10pm. The listing we found had already passed and gave no weekday, so check the organiser's calendar first. (Contra, Doca de Santo Amaro, Armazém 18; Free)
- **Group surf lesson at Carcavelos**: Ninety minutes with board and wetsuit included, ages 12 and up, or three hours with transport from Lisbon. Sitting on a board waiting for a wave, conversation happens. (Praia de Carcavelos, Av. Marginal; From 41.95 euros, 62.93 with transport)

## Things to do alone

- **MAAT on the river at Belém**: Art and technology museum, open 10am to 7pm and closed on Tuesdays. Non-residents pay 16 euros. (Wednesday to Monday, 10am-7pm; 16 euros)
- **Castelo de São Jorge**: Open 9am to 6pm from 1 November to the end of February, and until 9pm from March to October. Closed 1 January, 1 May and 24, 25 and 31 December. (9am-6pm in winter, 9am-9pm March to October)
- **Sintra by train**: A return from Lisbon costs 5.10 euros on CP fares in force since 1 January 2026. The 14 euro Train and Bus day ticket adds Scotturb buses 434 and 435 up to the palaces. (5.10 euros return)
- **Cascais and the coast**: Same 5.10 euro return as Sintra, from Cais do Sodré. Good for half a day on your own by the sea. (5.10 euros return)
- **Lisboa Card**: Free entry to 51 museums and monuments plus city transport. The tourist board page we checked did not show the price, so do the maths before you buy.
- **Doclisboa in October**: The international documentary festival reached its 24th edition in 2026. A cinema seat is one of the easiest things to do alone.

## Eating alone

- **Time Out Market Lisboa**: Counters and shared tables inside Mercado da Ribeira. Open until midnight Sunday to Wednesday and until 2am Thursday to Saturday, so it works for a late dinner too. (Sun-Wed 10am-midnight, Thu-Sat 10am-2am; Avenida 24 de Julho, Cais do Sodré)
- **Hostel group dinners**: At Goodmorning and Home Lisbon, dinner is when you meet the other guests. If eating alone is the part you dread, book those for your first two nights. (Baixa and Restauradores)
- **Cheap lunch prices**: Numbeo users put a meal at an inexpensive restaurant at 15 euros, in a range of 11 to 20, and half a litre of beer at 3 euros. These are crowd-sourced averages, not menu prices. (About 15 euros)

## At night

- Going out: Evenings centre on Bairro Alto, Príncipe Real and Cais do Sodré. Finalmente Club on Rua da Palmeira puts on a show every night, with the club open from 1am to 6am.
- Getting back: The metro closes at 1am, and you need to be through the gates by then to be sure of reaching any station. After that it is taxis or Bolt. We could not verify Carris night-bus times on the operator's site.
- Avoid: The Foreign Office asks you not to accept drinks from strangers or leave yours unattended, and notes that measures in Portuguese bars are often stronger than in the UK.

## Safety

### General

Portugal ranks 7th of 163 countries in the 2026 Global Peace Index. The real risk for visitors is theft on public transport and at crowded stops, often by people working in teams with a distraction.

### Women

The Foreign Office says sexual assaults are rare but do occur, mostly late at night around nightlife areas. It suggests saving your accommodation's location in your maps app and not leaving with people you have just met.

### LGBTQ+

Same-sex marriage has been legal since 2010 and Portugal is 12th on the 2026 Rainbow Map. Most queer bars are in Bairro Alto and Príncipe Real.

### Trans people

Law 38/2018 recognises the right to self-determination of gender identity. Guidance on documents and airport checks must be reviewed by a trans person before this page is published.

### At night

Metro until 1am, then a taxi or a ride app. Take drink precautions in Bairro Alto and Cais do Sodré.

### Common scams

The Foreign Office page for Portugal does not list specific scams. The useful rule is still to watch for distraction theft on transport.

### Emergency numbers

- Emergency services: 112
- SNS 24 health line: 808 24 24 24

### Hospitals

- ULS Santa Maria (Hospital de Santa Maria), public, central emergency department
- Hospital da Luz Lisboa, private, 24-hour urgent care

## LGBTQ+

- Same-sex relationships are legal
- Marriage: legal since 2010
- Legal gender recognition: self-determination since 2018
- Spartacus Gay Travel Index 2026: #4
- ILGA-Europe Rainbow Map 2026: 66.99%
- Checked on 2026-11-02

Portugal is 12th of 49 on the 2026 Rainbow Map with 67%. In Lisbon the gay and queer scene fits into a few blocks between Bairro Alto and Príncipe Real, all walkable.

Areas: Bairro Alto, Príncipe Real

- **Bar 106**: Long-running gay bar in Príncipe Real. (Tue-Thu and Sun 7.30pm-2am, Fri-Sat until 3am; Rua de São Marçal 106)
- **Purex**: Bar with a dance floor in Bairro Alto, Thursday to Saturday only. (Thu 10pm-2am, Fri-Sat 10pm-3am; Rua das Salgadeiras 28)
- **Side**: Gay bar in Bairro Alto, open every evening. (Daily 6pm-2am, Fri-Sat until 3am; Rua da Barroca 33)

- **ILGA Portugal**: Psychological and legal support as well as social services. Office at Rua dos Fanqueiros 38, by appointment only. https://ilga-portugal.pt/
- **Opus Diversidades**: Lisbon association on Rua José Estêvão that runs the Rainbow Portal of resources and training. https://rainbowportal.opusdiversidades.org/

## Dating

- App: Tinder, Bumble, Grindr, Hinge
- Norms: The apps work much as they do in London or Dublin. For a first meeting pick somewhere busy, such as Time Out Market or a bar in Príncipe Real, and make your own way home.
- Safety: The Foreign Office reports drink spiking with GHB and similar drugs. Order your own drinks, keep them in sight and tell someone where you are.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is Lisbon safe for a woman alone at night?

The UK Foreign Office lists theft on public transport and at crowded stops as the main risk. It says sexual assaults are rare but do happen, most often late at night around nightlife areas, and warns about drink spiking. Once the metro shuts at 1am, a Bolt or a metered taxi is the sensible way home.

### How much does a day in Lisbon cost for one person?

A dorm bed from 20 euros on Hostelworld (October 2026), two cheap meals at around 15 euros each according to Numbeo users, a 7.25 euro 24-hour Carris and Metro ticket and the 4 euro tourist tax come to roughly 65 euros. A private room in a hostel pushes that to around 130.

### Is it easy to meet people in Lisbon?

Yes, if you pick the right hostel. Goodmorning only takes solo travellers and sells a daily package of dinners and nights out; Home Lisbon runs a home-cooked dinner you sign up for at reception. Add the 10am free walking tour from Praça Luís de Camões and the free Rookie Run Club on Wednesday evenings.

### Is Lisbon a good choice for LGBTQ+ travellers?

Portugal ranks 12th of 49 countries on ILGA-Europe's 2026 Rainbow Map, scoring 67%, and same-sex marriage has been legal since 2010. Lisbon's gay and queer bars are clustered in Bairro Alto and Príncipe Real.

### Where should I stay in Lisbon as a solo woman?

Baixa. Yes! Lisbon Hostel has women-only dorms of five and six beds, one with its own bathroom, and Sant Jordi in Anjos has women-only dorms from four to ten beds. Both are a few minutes from a metro station, which matters on a late arrival.

### How do I get from the airport to the centre late at night?

The red metro line serves the airport on normal metro hours, 6.30am to 1am. After that you are looking at a taxi or Bolt, which runs airport pick-ups.

### Do I need anything special to enter Portugal from the UK?

Portugal is in Schengen, so the 90 days in 180 rule applies to British passport holders, and the EU's Entry/Exit System now records your fingerprints and photo at the border. Read the current GOV.UK entry page before you fly.
