## The short verdict

Yes, if you want a small, calm capital where being alone is effortless: the centre is pedestrianised and Numbeo users rate it safer than Prague or Budapest. It depends if you want big nights out every evening, because away from Metelkova the city turns in early. It is pricier than Prague: a cheap meal costs around 14 euros.

- Best season: Jun–Oct
- Daily budget for one: 50–170 EUR (mid 95)

Ljubljana is the easiest capital in this part of Europe for anyone who wants to be alone without feeling watched. The old centre is pedestrianised, and free electric Kavalir buggies run inside the zone for anyone who struggles to walk far. Numbeo users give it a safety index of 78 out of 100, ahead of Prague (75) and Budapest (66).

It is not cheap in the way Prague or Budapest are. Numbeo users put a simple restaurant meal at around 14 euros, about £12, and a dorm bed starts at 13-15 euros. In the evenings, away from Metelkova, the city goes quiet early. If you want a night that runs until dawn every day of the week, look elsewhere.

If you are combining Slovenia with Italy, direct coaches from Trieste and Venice make Ljubljana an easy add-on, and Trieste is on the international rail network too.

What it does well is pace. A morning at the market, an afternoon on the castle tour, a Tuesday concert at Hostel Celica, a former prison whose cells are now artist-designed rooms. Add a day in the mountains, with the Foreign Office's advice on bears and closed huts in mind, and a long weekend fills itself.

## Who it's for

- First-time solo travellers who want somewhere small and calm
- Walkers and anyone who likes eating outdoors from March to November
- People using the city as a base for mountain walks
- Rail and coach travellers combining Slovenia with Trieste or Venice

## Who it's not for

- Anyone wanting late nights out every evening
- Budget travellers expecting Budapest prices
- Those after a queer scene with lots of venues

## Where to stay alone

### Old Town and Center

- Pro: Everything on foot in a pedestrian zone served by free Kavalir buggies. Fluxus Hostel is about 100 metres from the centre, Turn Hostel and Party Hostel Zzz under 400.
- Con: You pay for location. Central private rooms start at 17-30 euros and climb fast.
- At night: Numbeo users score walking alone at night in the city at 76 out of 100.
- Price band: mid
- Place to stay: Fluxus Hostel, dorms from about 13 euros
- Place to stay: Turn Hostel, dorms from about 20 euros

### Metelkova and Tabor

- Pro: The alternative culture quarter, with AKC Metelkova mesto and Hostel Celica at Metelkova 8.
- Con: This is the live music and club area, so not the place for early nights.
- At night: The city's nightlife hub. Head back in company if it's late, and watch your drink.
- Price band: low
- Place to stay: Hostel Celica, Metelkova 8, a former prison with artist-designed cells, dorms from about 15 euros, 24-hour reception
- Place to stay: Hostel Tabor Ljubljana, dorms from about 18 euros

### Towards Tivoli

- Pro: Further from the bars, a little over a kilometre from the centre.
- Con: Few places open in the evening, so dinner means walking back in.
- At night: Quiet.
- Price band: mid
- Place to stay: Hostel Tivoli, dorms from about 21 euros, about 1.3 km from the centre

## How to meet people

- **Tuesday concerts at Hostel Celica**: The "Harmony of the World" series brings live music to the hostel almost every Tuesday in October and November 2026, plus a photography exhibition from 3 November. Open events where you sit next to whoever is there. (Tuesday evenings; Metelkova 8)
- **Open Kitchen (Odprta kuhna)**: An open-air food market on Pogačarjev trg, every sunny Friday from March to November, 10:00 to 21:00. Shared tables and stalls from different restaurants. On 14 November 2026 there is a special spoon-food edition. (Friday 10:00-21:00, March-November; Pogačarjev trg)
- **City centre and Castle tour**: The guided "Historical City Centre and Ljubljana Castle" tour costs 22.04 euros and is included in the Ljubljana Card if you book by email. An easy way to have company on day one. (22.04 EUR)
- **Klub Tiffany events**: Run by ŠKUC, the club works to keep its events a safe space for the LGBTQ+ community and has an anonymous form for reporting problems. Listings are on the Kulturni center Q site.
- **Volunteering with Pride**: Društvo Parada ponosa runs an LGBTIQ+ volunteering programme and a youth programme. Worth a look if you are staying a while.

## Things to do alone

- **Ljubljana Card**: Unlimited city buses, the guided centre tour, the National Gallery and a Chocolarium visit. 41 euros for 24 hours, 49 for 48, 54 for 72. Validate it every time you board a bus. (41-54 EUR)
- **Yummy Market Walk**: Two hours at the Central Market with seven tasting stops and lunch, Tuesday to Saturday at 11:00, from the tourist information centre on Adamič-Lundrovo nabrežje. (Tue-Sat 11:00; 76.59 EUR)
- **Slovenian Wine Festival**: On 19 and 20 November 2026 at Cankarjev dom. The Ljubljana Wine Route takes over Park Zvezda on 7 November. (November; Cankarjev dom, Prešernova cesta 10)
- **Beer tasting on a Ljubljanica boat**: One of the tours listed by the tourist board. On a boat you end up next to strangers whether you planned to or not.
- **Mountain walks**: The Foreign Office notes bears and wolves in mountain areas, and bears in woodland even near towns. Plan your route, tell someone, check huts are open and avoid closed trails. Wild camping is illegal, with fines of 40 to 500 euros. For mountain rescue, 112.
- **AKC Metelkova mesto**: The autonomous cultural centre, which marked its 33rd anniversary in September 2026. It is also where the Pride march starts.

## Eating alone

- **Open Kitchen on Pogačarjev trg**: Fridays from March to November, weather permitting. Order at whichever stall you like and sit at the shared tables. It is listed for 30 October 2026, 10:00 to 21:00. (Friday 10:00-21:00; Pogačarjev trg)
- **Hostel Celica bar**: Open 07:00 to 23:00, also to non-guests. A quiet spot in Metelkova to eat on your own. (07:00-23:00; Metelkova 8)
- **Central Market**: Where the Yummy Market Walk starts. Without the tour, it is still the simplest place for a quick lunch alone.
- **A benchmark bill**: Numbeo users put a cheap meal at 14 euros, a half-litre of beer at 3.50 and a cappuccino at 2.61. (14 EUR)

## At night

- Going out: Metelkova is the centre of nightlife, with AKC Metelkova mesto's gigs. For LGBTQ+ travellers the reference point is Klub Tiffany's events. For a quieter evening, stay in the old centre.
- Getting back: The centre is small and you walk home. On city buses pay with an Urbana card or a contactless bank card (bank cards don't get the free 90-minute transfer). For taxis, the tourist board explains how to check fares before you get in.
- Avoid: Crossing outside designated crossings, even on empty streets at night. The Foreign Office warns fines are heavy and unpaid ones can lead to documents or belongings being confiscated.

## Safety

### General

Numbeo users (326 contributions) give Ljubljana a safety index of 78.2 out of 100 and 90.3 for walking alone by day. The Foreign Office flags no specific crime problem against tourists, but warns of sudden storms, flash floods and occasional earthquakes in the west of the country.

### Women

We found no recent official data on harassment in Ljubljana. The perception data available is Numbeo's 76.2 out of 100 for walking alone at night.

### LGBTQ+

The law defines marriage as a union of two people. ILGA-Europe reports that at Pride on 14 June 2025 eggs were thrown, rainbow flags torn away and participants verbally and physically harassed, mainly in the evening programme.

### Trans people

In 2024 the Ministry of Health confirmed legal gender recognition does not require medical treatment, but by October 2026 the Civil Registry Act had not been amended. This section needs review by a trans person before publication.

### At night

The centre is small and busy at weekends. In Metelkova, the usual club-district care applies.

### Common scams

The Foreign Office notes tour guides must display a registration card. Carry at least a copy of your passport for the police.

### Emergency numbers

- Police: 113
- Ambulance, fire, mountain rescue: 112
- FCDO London, 24 hours: +44 20 7008 5000

### Hospitals

- University Medical Centre Ljubljana (UKC), Zaloška cesta 2, emergency care (+386 1 522 3700)
- Zdravstveni dom Ljubljana, Metelkova 9, community health centre with emergency service

## LGBTQ+

- Same-sex relationships are legal
- Marriage: legal, 2022 law in force 2023
- Legal gender recognition: medical certificate, undefined criteria
- Spartacus Gay Travel Index 2026: #41
- ILGA-Europe Rainbow Map 2026: 54.29%
- Checked on 2026-11-02

Slovenia is 17th of 49 in ILGA-Europe's Rainbow Map 2026 (54%), holding its place and gaining four points. Marriage is defined as a union of two people, and from November 2025 fertility treatment was opened to single women and female couples. In Ljubljana, LGBTQ+ life centres on Metelkova and June's Pride.

We found no official time for the last departure, so if you land late book a shuttle (GoOpti, Nomago, MNJ, Markun, ZUP) or take a taxi from outside the terminal, about 20 minutes.
- In town: You walk in the centre. On city buses, pay with an Urbana card (also virtual, in the app) or a contactless bank card. The BicikeLJ bike share has stations across the wider centre, and Kavalir buggies are free in the pedestrian zone.
