## The short verdict

It depends how much you will spend and how closely you will watch your wallet. On Saturdays the metro runs all night, hostels lay on dinners and paella for guests and the LGBTQ+ scene is one of Europe's largest. But the city surcharge is now 5 euros a night, the big sights are expensive and pickpocketing is the number one risk.

- Best season: Apr–Jul
- Daily budget for one: 60–200 EUR (mid 130)

Barcelona works alone, but it charges you in attention and in cash. Attention goes on your wallet. The Foreign Office repeats that in Spain thieves work in teams with distractions, and the places you will spend most time, the metro and crowded markets, are where a lapse costs most. Cash goes on everything else. Since 1 April 2026 the city surcharge on the tourist tax is 5 euros a night, rising a euro a year to 8 by 2029. The Sagrada Família costs 26 euros, Park Güell 18.

That said, it is one of the easiest cities in which to meet people. The big hostels know the drill: Paella Night at Yeah, karaoke and DJs in Generator's bar, brunch and a free tour at TOC. And on Saturdays the metro simply does not close, which is rare in Europe and handy if you are used to the last Tube.

The practical tip is to sleep in Gràcia or Eixample rather than on the Rambla. That is where you find Generator's women-only dorm and TOC's women-only rooms, and Hostelworld lists Onefam Batllo in Eixample from 14 euros a night.

## Who it's for

- Anyone who wants a hostel with group dinners and activities every night
- People who go out and want the metro home on a Saturday night
- LGBTQ+ travellers looking for a large, organised scene
- Fans of covered markets and eating at the counter

## Who it's not for

- Tight budgets that cannot absorb a 5 euro nightly surcharge
- Anyone who does not want to think about their wallet on the metro and the Rambla
- People looking for a quiet city in August or during La Mercè
- Anyone hoping to walk into the Sagrada Família without booking online

## Where to stay alone

### Gràcia

- Pro: Walkable from Eixample, with Generator's women-only dorm and a bar that runs events.
- Con: Away from the sea, and in mid-August the Festa Major fills every street.
- At night: Generator's bar closes at 1am on weekdays and 2am at weekends.
- Price band: mid
- Place to stay: Generator Barcelona, Carrer de Còrsega 373, six-bed women-only dorm from 16 euros, eight-bed dorm from 13.60
- Place to stay: Sant Jordi Hostels Gracia, beds from 19.75 euros on Hostelworld

### Eixample

- Pro: Wide, straight streets, metro everywhere, and the LGBTQ+ bar cluster in the left-hand side of the district.
- Con: Less atmospheric than the old quarters, with traffic on the main roads.
- At night: Lively around the Gaixample bars, especially at weekends.
- Price band: mid
- Place to stay: Yeah Hostel Barcelona, Carrer Girona 176, Paella Night and group dinners, beds from 25.22 euros on Hostelworld
- Place to stay: TOC Hostel Barcelona, Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes 580, women-only rooms, beds from 25 euros, rooftop pool May to October
- Place to stay: Onefam Batllo, beds from 14 euros on Hostelworld

### Ciutat Vella (Gòtic and Born)

- Pro: Walk to the Picasso Museum, La Boqueria and the sea. Runnerbean's free tour starts at Plaça Reial.
- Con: The most touristy area and, going by the Foreign Office warnings about crowds, the likeliest place to be pickpocketed.
- At night: Narrow streets, busy until late. Keep bag and phone in front of you.
- Price band: high
- Place to stay: Onefam Ramblas, beds from 18.86 euros on Hostelworld

- Getting back: Metro until midnight Monday to Thursday; on Fridays and the eve of public holidays until 2am; continuous from Saturday morning through to Sunday night; Sundays until midnight. It also runs all night on 23 June, 23 September and New Year's Eve. The NitBus runs 10pm to 5am every 20 to 30 minutes, and nearly every line passes Plaça de Catalunya.
- Avoid: The Foreign Office asks you to keep your drink in sight and not accept drinks from strangers. It also warns about fake police asking to see your wallet.

## Safety

### General

Spain ranks 27th of 163 in the 2026 Global Peace Index. In Barcelona the concrete problem is distraction theft on the metro, on the Rambla and in markets. The Foreign Office reminds you that real police ask for ID, not your wallet.

### Women

Sexual assaults are rare but do occur, the Foreign Office says. The 016 line is Spain's free, 24-hour helpline for violence against women.

### LGBTQ+

Spain tops the 2026 Rainbow Map. In Eixample the scene is open and concentrated, and the city runs an LGTBI centre with services.

### Trans people

Law 4/2023 allows a change of registered sex without medical reports for Spanish nationals. Guidance on documents and checks must be reviewed by a trans person.

### At night

Continuous metro on Saturdays, NitBus on other nights. To report a crime there is the ALERT COPS app.

### Common scams

Fake police, distraction theft in crowds, and timeshare offers.

### Emergency numbers

- Emergency services: 112
- Violence against women (free, 24 hours): 016

### Hospitals

- Hospital Clínic, A&E at C/ Villarroel 170, open 24 hours, tel. 93 227 54 00
- Hospital Universitari Vall d'Hebron, tel. 93 489 30 00

## LGBTQ+

- Same-sex relationships are legal
- Marriage: legal since 2005
- Legal gender recognition: self-determination since 2023 (Law 4/2023)
- Spartacus Gay Travel Index 2026: #2
- ILGA-Europe Rainbow Map 2026: 88.7%
- Checked on 2026-11-02

Spain is first of 49 on the 2026 Rainbow Map with 89% and has had marriage equality since 2005. In Barcelona the gay bars cluster in the left-hand side of the Eixample, the so-called Gaixample, a few blocks apart.

Areas: Eixample (Gaixample)

- **Moeem**: The only venue on Patroc's list described as a gay and lesbian bar. (Mon 6pm-2.30am, Thu 9pm-2.30am, Fri-Sat 6pm-3am, Sun 6pm-2.30am; C. de Muntaner 11)
- **Priscilla**: Bar with camp decor and a street terrace, open from late morning. (C. del Consell de Cent 273)
- **Believe**: On the edge of the Gaixample, drag shows, entry about 12 to 15 euros with a drink. (Nightly 11pm-5am, Fri-Sat until 6am; C. de Balmes 56)
- **Arena**: Club open every night from 12.30am, between Eixample and Ciutat Vella. (Ronda Sant Pere 19-21)

- **Centre LGTBI de Barcelona**: City council service with walk-in support at Comte Borrell 22, tel. 93 880 51 11. https://ajuntament.barcelona.cat/lgtbi/
- **FELGTBI+**: National federation that runs the Línea Arcoíris support line. https://felgtbi.org/

## Dating

- App: Tinder, Bumble, Hinge, Grindr
- Norms: People go out late and often meet in a neighbourhood bar. A market such as Sant Antoni or a bar in Gràcia makes a good public first meeting place.
- Safety: The Foreign Office warns about drink spiking with GHB and liquid ecstasy. Order your own drinks and get home by metro or a taxi you booked yourself.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is Barcelona safe for a woman travelling alone?

Theft is the realistic risk. For Spain, the UK Foreign Office says thieves often work in teams using distraction, and warns about fake police asking for wallets and drink spiking with GHB. Getting home is easy at weekends, with the metro running until 2am on Fridays and all night on Saturdays, and the NitBus covering other nights from 10pm to 5am.

### How much does a day in Barcelona cost on your own?

A 14 to 16 euro dorm bed, the 5 euro city surcharge, two cheap meals at about 16 euros each according to Numbeo users and a few rides on the 13 euro T-casual come to around 60 euros. A hostel private room and one museum take it to about 130.

### How do I meet people in Barcelona?

Yeah Hostel in Eixample runs a Paella Night and group dinners around 9pm. Generator in Gràcia has karaoke, DJs and live music in its bar. Runnerbean's free tour leaves Plaça Reial at 11am all year, plus 4.30pm from April to October.

### Is Barcelona good for LGBTQ+ travellers?

Yes. Spain tops ILGA-Europe's 2026 Rainbow Map with 89%, and the gay bars of the Eixample, known as the Gaixample, sit within a few blocks of each other. The city council runs the Centre LGTBI at Comte Borrell 22.

### Where should I stay in Barcelona as a solo woman?

Generator on Carrer de Còrsega, between Gràcia and Eixample, has a six-bed women-only dorm from 16 euros a night. TOC on Gran Via has women-only rooms and a rooftop pool open from 1 May to 1 November.

### How do I get from El Prat to the city late at night?

The Aerobús runs 24 hours to Terminals 1 and 2, from 7.75 euros. At night the N17 and N18 buses also run from Plaça Catalunya. The L9 Sud metro needs a 5.90 euro airport ticket; the T-casual is not valid there.

### When should I go?

It depends what you want. La Mercè fills late September, 23 to 27 September in 2026, and the Festa Major de Gràcia takes over mid-August. For smaller crowds, avoid those weeks and the Circuit Festival in early August.
