## The short verdict

It depends on your passport and your profile. For solo travellers the UK is easy, with cities linked by rail and a pub culture that welcomes people on their own. But most visitors now need a 20-pound ETA, and for trans travellers the 2025 Supreme Court ruling changed the rules on single-sex spaces.

- Best season: –
- Daily budget for one: 70–280 GBP (mid 150)

The UK suits people travelling alone: cities are linked by rail, English is the only language you need, and sitting alone at a pub bar is completely ordinary. Edinburgh is the best example, small enough to walk and full of hostels that put on something every night.

Before you book, check two things. The first is paperwork. Coming from Dublin on an Irish passport you need nothing extra, but visitors from the US and most of Europe need a 20-pound ETA, and the Home Office warns that copycat websites charge more for it. The second is budget: a pound buys about 1.34 dollars, and a simple meal in Edinburgh costs around 24 dollars.

For LGBTQ+ travellers the picture is patchier than elsewhere in northern Europe. Same-sex marriage has been legal since 2014, but the UK sits 22nd in the Rainbow Map 2026, and after the Supreme Court's April 2025 ruling the rules for trans people in single-sex spaces changed. Read the section below before you travel.

## Who it's for

- Travellers who want English-speaking cities linked by train
- Anyone who loves pubs, live music and festivals
- People happy to sort paperwork and bookings in advance

## Who it's not for

- Anyone hoping to arrive without an ETA when they need one
- Tight budgets
- Sun-seekers

## Safety

### General

Italy's foreign ministry warns of frequent pickpocketing, especially in London, on tourist streets and public transport, and of a national terrorism threat level of severe, with 10 attacks between 2018 and 2026 and tighter checks in crowded places. For Northern Ireland it advises caution in the divided districts of Belfast and Derry/Londonderry. The UK is 39th in the Global Peace Index 2026.

### Women

The UK is 23rd of 181 in the Women, Peace and Security Index 2025/26. Carrying a photocopy of your passport and leaving the original somewhere safe is sensible advice.

### LGBTQ+

Same-sex relationships and marriage are legal. The UK is 22nd in the Rainbow Map 2026.

### Trans people

The Gender Recognition Act 2004 requires a diagnosis and two years lived in your gender. On 16 April 2025 the Supreme Court ruled in For Women Scotland ([2025] UKSC 16) that sex in the Equality Act 2010 means biological sex, narrowing the effect of a gender recognition certificate. This section needs review by a trans person before publication.

### Emergency numbers

## LGBTQ+

- Same-sex relationships are legal
- Marriage: legal since 2014 (Northern Ireland 2020)

Legal gender recognition follows the Gender Recognition Act 2004, with a diagnosis and two years lived in the acquired gender. In For Women Scotland on 16 April 2025 the Supreme Court held that sex in the Equality Act 2010 means biological sex. The UK is 22nd of 49 in the Rainbow Map 2026 with 43.90%, and 32nd in the Spartacus Gay Travel Index 2026.

## Entry and documents

Most visitors, including US citizens and Europeans, need an ETA before travelling, while Irish and British passport holders do not; check the official GOV.UK page for your nationality rather than relying on our summary.

## Culture and customs

The pub is where you can be alone without anyone noticing. According to the ONS, 29.5% of UK households are a single person. Watch out for websites imitating the government's ETA service: the Home Office says they charge more than the official 20 pounds. In Edinburgh, a 5% visitor levy applies to the first five nights of paid accommodation from 24 July 2026.

## Solo itineraries

### Edinburgh and the Highlands (7 days)

Edinburgh → Stirling → Inverness

Four nights in Edinburgh, then north. From London, the Caledonian Sleeper from Euston is an overnight alternative to flying.

### London to Scotland by train (14 days)

London → York → Edinburgh → Stirling → Inverness → Glasgow

Two weeks by rail from south to north. Avoid Edinburgh in August unless you have already booked, because of the Fringe.

## Cost for one
