## The short verdict

Yes, especially outside August. Edinburgh is small enough to walk, and the Old Town hostels run something every night, from a free pub quiz to whisky tastings. In August the Fringe fills every bed and prices follow, and since July 2026 a 5% visitor levy applies to accommodation. Americans and most Europeans now need an ETA.

- Best season: May–Sept
- Daily budget for one: 70–280 GBP (mid 150)

Edinburgh is small enough to cross on foot in an afternoon, which is exactly what makes it easy on your own. You can walk from the Old Town to Stockbridge, the hostels around the Grassmarket put on something most nights, and Airlink 100 links the airport to the centre around the clock. From London, the Caledonian Sleeper is an overnight alternative to flying.

August is the problem. The Fringe, running from 6 to 30 August in 2027, fills the city, so book months ahead or come another time. Since 24 July 2026 a 5% visitor levy applies to the first five nights of any paid stay. And the Scottish weather is real: bring layers and a waterproof even in June. Visitors from the US and Europe also need a 20-pound ETA before travelling; Irish passport holders do not.

Out of season the city is at its best for solo travellers. A ceilidh with a caller walking you through the steps, a climb up Arthur's Seat, lunch at a weekend market: none of it feels odd alone. Trans travellers should read the safety section before booking, because the legal picture in Britain shifted in 2025.

## Who it's for

- Anyone who wants a compact city to explore on foot
- Hostel-goers who want social events every night
- Festival fans prepared to book August months in advance
- Walkers who want hills without leaving the city

## Who it's not for

- Anyone turning up in August without a booking
- Sun-seekers
- Budget travellers who balk at the new visitor levy and ETA on top of UK prices

## Where to stay alone

- Pro: Below the castle and walking distance to everything, with the city's most sociable hostels and a Saturday market in the Grassmarket.

## How to meet people

- **Pub quiz and live music at the Greyfriars Bar**: The Kick Ass hostels keep a fixed calendar. The Wednesday pub quiz is free; there is live music at weekends and karaoke on Sundays. (Quiz Wednesdays 8pm, music Friday and Saturday 7pm, karaoke Sundays 8pm; Greyfriars Bar, Old Town; Free)

- **Kick Ass pub crawl**: Seven bars in one night, booking required. The loudest option on the list, good if you want a ready-made group. (Every night except Wednesday and Sunday, from 8pm; 15 GBP)
- **Edinburgh Ceilidh Club**: Weekly ceilidhs since 2005, with live bands and a caller who teaches every dance. Open to everyone, including people who have never danced before.

- Getting back: Lothian NightBus services run from midnight to 4.30am, and Airlink 100 serves the airport 24/7. The 5.70 contactless cap covers city buses and trams.
- Avoid: Leaving your phone or bag on show in crowded tourist streets, especially in August and at Hogmanay.

## Safety

### General

Italy's foreign ministry notes frequent pickpocketing on UK tourist streets and public transport, and a national terrorism threat level of severe, with tighter checks at stations, airports and crowded places. The UK is 39th in the Global Peace Index 2026.

### Women

Edinburgh Central Youth Hostel has en-suite private rooms and a café-bar open until 11pm. The UK is 23rd of 181 in the Women, Peace and Security Index 2025/26.

### LGBTQ+

Same-sex relationships and marriage are legal. The UK is 22nd of 49 in the Rainbow Map 2026, at 43.90%.

### Trans people

The Gender Recognition Act 2004 remains in force, but on 16 April 2025 the Supreme Court ruled in For Women Scotland ([2025] UKSC 16) that sex in the Equality Act 2010 means biological sex. That narrows the effect of a gender recognition certificate, including for access to single-sex spaces. Scottish Trans publishes up-to-date guidance. This section needs review by a trans person before publication.

### At night

The centre is small and busy. After midnight the NightBus network runs until 4.30am.

### Common scams

The Home Office warns that other websites charge more than 20 pounds for an ETA by imitating government services. Apply only on GOV.UK.

### Emergency numbers

- Emergency: 999
- Police non-emergency: 101
- Non-urgent medical advice (including Minor Injuries Clinic appointments): 111
