# Solo travel for men: meeting people, staying active, dodging the scams

For most men travelling alone, the hard part isn't the daytime. It's 8pm. The sights are done, you're in a city where you know nobody, and the easiest option is whichever bar has someone waving you in from the pavement. This page is about filling those evenings well, and not paying for them three times over.

## What actually matters

**Social plans with a hook.** Meeting people alone is far easier when there's an excuse: a morning walking tour, a cooking class, a bike ride, a five-a-side game, a language exchange, a hostel quiz. **Activities over venues.** A group trek, a surf camp, a dive course: by the next evening you already have someone to eat with. It beats any bar.

**Age is fine. Format matters.** In Hostelworld's 2026 report, 65.8% of solo travellers on the platform were aged 18 to 30. Take a private room in a social hostel, or join a small-group tour.

**The night-out scams.** Government travel advice describes them precisely. The UK Foreign Office's Hungary page warns that some bars, clubs and restaurants charge very high amounts, that tourists have been taken to cash machines to pay, that some taxi drivers take a commission for steering passengers to particular venues, and that there have been reports of drinks being spiked in Budapest bars. The rules that follow are simple:

- Ask to see the menu and prices before ordering, and check the bill.
- Don't follow anyone who approaches you in the street offering "a better place".
- If a taxi driver pushes a particular venue, get out.
