# Solo travel: an independent guide for everyone who travels alone

> Not a tour operator, not a dating site. An independent, sourced guide to where to go alone, how to meet people if you want to, and what a trip for one really costs.

Most travel guides skip one question: what if I'm on my own? Every page on this site tries to answer it, with checked facts, named sources and the date we last verified them.

We don't sell trips and we don't arrange dates. We're not a tour operator and not a dating app. We're a guide. We tell you where to go, where to sleep, how to meet people if you'd like to, how to be left in peace if you'd rather, and what doesn't work.

## Who travels alone

All sorts of people. First-timers nervous about dinner for one. People fresh out of a relationship. Fifty-somethings whose kids have left and who are done waiting. Remote workers. Gay, lesbian, bi, trans and non-binary travellers who need to know where the law, and the people, are on their side. People who simply like choosing where to go and when to get up.

It isn't niche. Hostelworld counted 4.5 million solo trips booked on its platform between July 2025 and June 2026. ([source](https://www.hostelworld.com/state-of-solo-travel)) Across the EU, households of one adult without children grew by 19.2% between 2016 and 2025 to 76.1 million, against 6.0% growth for all households. ([source](https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/statistics-explained/index.php?title=Household_composition_statistics)) Living alone isn't the same as being single, and neither is the same as travelling alone. But the world hotels are priced for, built on double rooms and "per person sharing", fits fewer people every year.

## What actually matters when you go alone

**The cost of being one.** The line most guides ignore. The single supplement exists because prices are set for two, and there are ways round it, covered in our guide to [the single supplement](/en/blog/single-supplement-how-to-avoid-it/).

**Evenings.** Days fill themselves. Evenings don't. That's why every city page has a block on meeting people, one on eating alone and one on nights out: where to go, how to get back, what to avoid.

**Specific safety.** Not "it's a safe city", but safety at night, for women, for LGBTQ+ travellers, and the scams that actually happen there. Split by theme, with sources.

**Ease.** Getting in from the airport without a drama, walking the centre, being understood. The easier the city, the more energy you have left to enjoy it.

## Using the Solo Score

The Solo Score is our destination index, with a public method. This page uses the default profile, weighted like this:

| Component | Default weight |
|---|---|
| Safety | 20 |
| Sociability | 20 |
| Ease | 15 |
| Cost for one | 15 |
| Women's safety | 10 |
| LGBTQ+ inclusion | 10 |
| Nightlife and events | 7 |
| Demographics | 3 |
| Legal gender recognition | 0 |

If you fit a more specific profile, switch to it and the weights and order change. There are profiles for [solo women](/en/solo-female-travel/), [LGBTQ+ travellers](/en/lgbtq-travel/), men, over-50s and first-timers, plus budget travellers, remote workers, introverts and people travelling after a breakup.

One thing we state openly: demographics, meaning how many people live alone and the ratio of men to women by age, count for just 3 points out of 100. It's an interesting figure, not a reason to pick a destination. We explain why in [the myth of countries with more women](/en/blog/the-myth-of-countries-with-more-women/).

The full method, with formulas, sources and limits, is on the [Solo Score page](/en/data/solo-score/).

## How we work

Every fact has a source and a verification date. Every page stays out of search results until a human editor has reviewed and signed it. Mistakes are corrected in public. Our [Methodology page](/en/methodology/) explains the process, and fixes are logged on the [Corrections page](/en/corrections/).

## Frequently asked questions

### Who is this site for?

Anyone travelling alone, single or not: first-timers, people after a breakup, remote workers, over-50s, LGBTQ+ travellers, or people who simply prefer their own company. We don't sell trips or arrange meetings. We publish checked information on where to go and how to get by alone.

### Is travelling alone more expensive?

Often, because of the single supplement: hotels, ships and tours price for two. You can cut it by sharing a room on a group tour, booking rooms and cabins built for one, or using operators that waive it. G Adventures, for one, says most of its trips have no single supplement.

### Where do solo travellers go most?

On Hostelworld bookings between July 2025 and June 2026, the countries with the biggest share of solo trips were Thailand (7.6%), Spain (6.4%), Vietnam (5.6%) and Italy (5.2%).

### How do you meet people when travelling alone?

Give yourself an excuse: walking tours, classes, social hostels, language exchanges, group sport. Every city page has a "Meet people" block with places, days and times. In Hostelworld's 2026 survey, 37.3% of solo travellers named meeting new people as a reason to travel alone.

### What is the Solo Score?

Our 0-100 index for each destination, built from nine components: safety, women's safety, LGBTQ+ inclusion, legal gender recognition, sociability, ease, cost for one, nightlife and events, and demographics. The weights change with the traveller profile you pick.

### Why are some pages not indexed by search engines?

A page only becomes indexable after a human editor has reviewed and signed it. Until then it stays readable but out of search results. Our methodology page explains the process.
