Hungary
Budapest, thermal baths and cheap trains, with LGBTQ+ law still in flux.
The short verdict
Yes if you want somewhere cheap and easy to cover by rail, with Budapest as a base and thermal baths everywhere; Hungary sits 15th of 163 in the Global Peace Index 2026. It depends for LGBTQ+ travellers: the new government has begun dismantling the 2021 and 2025 laws, but in October 2026 the job is unfinished.

version v1 · How we calculate it
For most solo travellers Hungary means Budapest, and that is no bad thing. The capital has the most organised hostel scene in the region, thermal baths open every day and transport that costs about a pound a ride. Everything else is a train away, booked on the MÁVPlusz app, and night trains leave Budapest for Croatia if you want to carry on south without flying.
On safety it does well: 15th of 163 in the Global Peace Index 2026, a long way above both the UK and the US. The practical risks, according to the Foreign Office, are pickpockets in crowded places and bars that present outrageous bills. Two rules worth knowing before you land. You may not drink any alcohol at all and then drive, and police can ask for your actual passport, not a photocopy.
The difficult part is the law. Between 2020 and 2025 Hungary ended legal gender recognition, passed its 2021 "propaganda" law and banned LGBTI-themed assemblies. After the April 2026 election the new government changed course and parliament has voted through part of the repeal. The transition is half done, and this page sets out what has changed and what has not.
Everything else here is cheap by London or New York standards.
Who it's for / who it's not for
- Anyone after a cheap capital with a ready-made hostel social scene
- Thermal bath lovers, including in midwinter
- Rail travellers combining Hungary with Vienna or the Croatian coast
- LGBTQ+ travellers who want a settled legal picture before they book
- Anyone looking for sea or high mountains
- Drivers who want even one glass of wine with dinner
Safety
General
Hungary ranks 15th of 163 in the Global Peace Index 2026. The Foreign Office reports frequent pickpocketing and bag-snatching in Budapest on busy transport, in stations and at markets, plus padded bills in bars, clubs and restaurants. Terrorist attacks cannot be ruled out, as across much of Europe. Always carry your passport.
Women
We found no recent official data on street harassment in Hungary that we could report with confidence. The practical precautions are those in the Budapest guide. If you are assaulted, call 112.
LGBTQ+
Same-sex sexual activity is legal. The Foreign Office calls Budapest generally tolerant and warns that outside the capital public affection may draw unwanted attention.
Trans people
Legal gender recognition has been impossible since 2020 (Act XXX of 2020, Section 33), and the 2025 constitutional amendment states that human beings are male or female. This section needs review by a trans person before publication.
At night
In Budapest the documented night-time problem is the bar bill rather than the street. Tram 6 runs all night.
Common scams
Taxi drivers taking commission to deliver you to particular bars; inflated bills with an escort to the cashpoint. Always read the price list.

Hungary is 38th of 49 in ILGA-Europe's Rainbow Map 2026 (23% in the ranking table). Registered partnerships have existed since 2009; same-sex marriage is banned. The so-called child protection law came in 2021, a ban on LGBTI-themed assemblies with fines for organisers and participants in March 2025, and a constitutional amendment in April 2025. In April 2026 the EU Court of Justice ruled that the 2021 law breaches fundamental rights, and in October 2026 parliament voted 139 to 51 to remove its anti-LGBTQ provisions. Budapest Pride on 27 June 2026 went ahead with police approval, though AP reported that the 2025 ban was still formally on the books. The Foreign Office removed its warning about restrictions on LGBT+ marches on 23 September 2026. Check the news before joining any public event. This page is not legal advice.
Entry and documents
Hungary is in the EU and Schengen; check passport validity and the Entry/Exit System rules on the official UK government page before you travel.
Official source ↗Culture and customs
Carry your passport: the Foreign Office notes that police will not accept a photocopy. Drugs, cannabis included, carry severe penalties, even in transit through Hungarian airports. Drink-driving rules are absolute, and outside towns dipped headlights must be on even by day. In bars, read the price list before ordering, which is the single piece of advice the Foreign Office repeats most. Outside Budapest, same-sex couples showing affection in public may draw unwanted attention.

Cities
Frequently asked questions
Is Hungary safe for solo travellers?
It ranks 15th of 163 countries in the Global Peace Index 2026, well ahead of the UK and the US. The Foreign Office's main warnings are pickpocketing in crowded parts of Budapest and bars that run up huge bills. In any emergency call 112.
What do UK travellers need to enter Hungary?
Hungary is in Schengen, so you get up to 90 days in any 180 without a visa. Your passport must be under 10 years old on the day you arrive and valid for 3 months after you leave, and the EU Entry/Exit System registers fingerprints and a photo on first entry.
What changed for LGBTQ+ people in 2026?
In April the EU's Court of Justice struck down the 2021 law, in June Budapest Pride went ahead with police approval, and in October parliament voted to remove the anti-LGBTQ provisions of the 2021 law. The 2025 assembly ban was still formally in force in June.
How cheap is Hungary compared with the UK?
Numbeo users in Budapest put a cheap restaurant meal at around 4,500 forints, roughly £10 at the ECB rate, and a transport ticket is 500 forints. We have no comparable source for other Hungarian cities.
Is it easy to travel by train?
Yes. Tickets are sold on the MÁVPlusz app and jegy.mav.hu, and night trains run from Budapest, including the Adria service to Split. MÁVDIREKT customer service is on +36 1 349 4949.
