Methodology
Solo Score v1
A 0-100 index of how well a destination works for someone travelling alone. Nine components, weighted differently for sixteen profiles. Weights, sources and limits are public; the dataset is CC BY 4.0.
The formula
score(profile) = Σ componentᵢ × weightᵢ(profile) / Σ weightᵢ(profile)
Components with no data are left out and the remaining weights redistributed, so a city is not penalised for missing data. National indices apply to every city in the country; social life, cost and nightlife come from each city's own guide.
The nine components
- Safety
- Global Peace Index (Institute for Economics and Peace): country rank.
- Safety for women
- Women, Peace and Security Index (Georgetown GIWPS): country rank out of 181.
- LGBTQ+ inclusivity
- Average of the Spartacus Gay Travel Index (rank) and ILGA-Europe's Rainbow Map (%, Europe only). Capped at 20 where same-sex relationships are a crime.
- Trans recognition
- Legal gender recognition (ILGA World): self-determination 95, with requirements 55, unclear 35, not possible 10.
- Social life
- Checked ways to meet people in the city guide (hostels with events, walking tours, language exchanges, meetups) plus half the recurring events; 12 = 100.
- Ease
- EF English Proficiency Index (rank); English-speaking countries 95.
- Cost for one
- Mid daily budget for one person, converted to euros: €35 = 100, €220 = 0.
- Nightlife and events
- Recurring events, LGBTQ+ venues and night guidance in the city guide; 10 = 100.
- Singles demographics
- Share of one-person households (Eurostat EU-SILC, national offices, UN): 10% = 0, 45% = 100. Low weight: interesting, not decisive.

Limits
- National indices do not describe every city: Naples and Bologna share the same safety value.
- Social life and nightlife measure what we have checked in the guide, not everything the city offers.
- Guides are in editorial review: scores may change after editors sign them off.
- The score is a starting point, not a verdict on your trip.
