Netherlands
Nightly trains across the Randstad, English everywhere, and cities close together
The short verdict
Yes, the Netherlands is easy on your own: short distances, night trains every night between Rotterdam, Schiphol, Amsterdam and Utrecht, and the best non-native English in the world according to the EF EPI 2025. The drawbacks are cost, especially in Amsterdam, and petty theft around the big stations.

version v1 · How we calculate it
The Netherlands is small, flat and very well connected, which makes it easy for anyone travelling solo. Amsterdam to Utrecht, Leiden or Haarlem is a short train ride, and across the Randstad night trains run every night of the week. Almost everyone speaks English; the country tops the EF English Proficiency Index 2025 out of 123.
The downside is price. Amsterdam is expensive by any European standard, and if you are used to London you will find it familiar rather than cheap. The stations need care: the FCDO warns of thieves on the trains and trams to Schiphol, of fake plain-clothes police asking to see your cards, and of drink spiking aimed at people on their own.
Do not stop at the capital. Spend a couple of nights in Amsterdam, then base yourself in a smaller city a short train ride away. Keep your passport on you at all times, because carrying ID is the law here, and the fine for not having it is 100 euros.
Who it's for / who it's not for
- People who want several cities by train without long journeys
- Anyone happy on a bike, or keen to learn
- LGBTQ+ travellers looking for solid legal protection and a scene with history
- Travellers who want to get by entirely in English
- Tight budgets that plan to stay only in Amsterdam
- Anyone chasing guaranteed sun and beaches
- People who would rather not carry their passport everywhere
Safety
General
The FCDO says pickpocketing and bag-snatching are common in central Amsterdam, with gangs on Schiphol trains and trams, and notes organised-crime violence linked to drug trafficking in big cities, which mostly affects those involved. Italy's foreign ministry also flags port areas and bus and train stations at night. The country is 17th in the Global Peace Index 2026 and 8th in the Women, Peace and Security Index 2025/26.
Women
The FCDO highlights drink spiking as a particular risk for young women and solo travellers. Keep your drink in sight.
LGBTQ+
Strong legal protection and dedicated services. In Amsterdam the Roze in Blauw police network supports victims of discrimination and hate crime.
Trans people
Legal gender can be changed with an expert's statement and no surgery requirement since 2014. This section needs review by a trans person before publication.

Entry and documents
British visitors need no visa for short stays within the Schengen limit, but passport rules and the new Entry/Exit System apply, so read the current FCDO page before you travel rather than relying on our summary.

A few rules catch visitors out. From age 14 you must be able to show ID, and the fine for not doing so is 100 euros. Cannabis is tolerated only in coffeeshops: since 2023 smoking it in the street has been banned in Amsterdam's old centre, and drinking alcohol in the street is banned across most of the centre too. On a bike, stay in the right-hand lane and use lights after dark, which is compulsory. Swimming in Amsterdam's canals earns a 160-euro fine, and people drown in them every year after drinking.
