Portugal

Peaceful, social hostels and EU-low prices, with tourist taxes on the rise

The short verdict

Yes, Portugal is one of the easiest countries in Europe to travel alone. It ranks 7th of 163 in the 2026 Global Peace Index, restaurant and hotel prices sit well below the EU average, and Lisbon and Porto are full of hostels built for people arriving on their own. The catch is creeping cost: tourist taxes in both cities and dorm beds from 20 euros.

version v1 · How we calculate it

Portugal works for solo travel for two reasons you can measure. It is among the most peaceful countries in the world, 7th of 163 in the 2026 Global Peace Index, and eating and sleeping cost less than in most of Western Europe: Eurostat put its 2024 price level for restaurants and hotels at 75.5 against an EU average of 100.

The third reason is harder to measure and more useful. Hostels in Lisbon and Porto have organised themselves around people arriving alone, with group dinners, walking tours and women-only dorms. Goodmorning in Lisbon takes solo travellers only.

What does not work. Prices in the two big cities rise faster than the national average: Lisbon charges a 4 euro nightly tourist tax, Porto 3. In summer the Foreign Office warns about wildfires from April to October and dangerous currents on beaches.

Who it's for / who it's not for

  • First-time solo travellers who want somewhere calm and short-haul from the UK or Ireland
  • Anyone who wants hostels with group activities already arranged
  • People who want eating out to cost less than in most of Western Europe
  • Travellers with one or two weeks who want two contrasting cities linked by train
  • Anyone after nightlife until dawn outside Lisbon
  • People who want to explore the interior without driving
  • Summer beachgoers who do not want to pay attention to lifeguard flags

Same-sex marriage has been legal since 2010 under Law 9/2010. Law 38/2018 recognises the right to self-determination of gender identity. On ILGA-Europe's 2026 Rainbow Map Portugal is 12th of 49 with 67%. Its country page records that a ban on conversion practices is in force, and recommends further work on legal gender recognition based on self-determination.

Entry and documents

For British passport holders the current rules, including the 90 days in 180 limit and the EU Entry/Exit System, are on the GOV.UK Portugal entry requirements page. Check it before you book; this is not legal advice.

Culture and customs

The Foreign Office suggests keeping money in more than one place and a copy of your passport photo page somewhere safe. On the beach, lifeguard flags matter, with red meaning stay out of the water and yellow meaning paddle at the edge only. Wildfire risk peaks from April to October, and starting a fire, even by accident, is illegal and can mean a fine or prison. Bar measures are poured more generously than you might expect.

Cities

Frequently asked questions

Is Portugal safe for solo travellers?

The 2026 Global Peace Index ranks it 7th most peaceful of 163 countries. The practical risks the UK Foreign Office flags are distraction theft on transport and at crowded stops, and drink spiking in bars.

Is Portugal cheap compared with the rest of Europe?

On average, yes. Eurostat put Portugal's 2024 price level for restaurants and hotels at 75.5, against an EU average of 100. Lisbon and Porto add tourist taxes of 4 and 3 euros a night.

What is the situation for LGBTQ+ travellers?

Same-sex marriage has been legal since 2010 and Law 38/2018 recognises self-determination of gender identity. ILGA-Europe's 2026 Rainbow Map ranks Portugal 12th of 49 with 67%.

Lisbon or Porto for a first solo trip?

Lisbon if you want hostels with group dinners every night and more nightlife. Porto if you want a smaller centre and lower costs, with dorm beds from 14 euros on Hostelworld against about 20 in Lisbon in late October 2026.

What do I need to enter Portugal from the UK?

Portugal is in Schengen, so the 90 days in any 180 rule applies to British passport holders, and the EU Entry/Exit System now takes fingerprints and a photo at the border. Check the GOV.UK entry page before you travel.

Are there summer risks?

The Foreign Office flags wildfire risk from April to October and dangerous rip currents on beaches. A red flag means do not go in the water.
