Pubs, trains and linked-up cities, with an ETA for most visitors

The short verdict

It depends on your passport and your profile. For solo travellers the UK is easy, with cities linked by rail and a pub culture that welcomes people on their own. But most visitors now need a 20-pound ETA, and for trans travellers the 2025 Supreme Court ruling changed the rules on single-sex spaces.

version v1 · How we calculate it

The UK suits people travelling alone: cities are linked by rail, English is the only language you need, and sitting alone at a pub bar is completely ordinary. Edinburgh is the best example, small enough to walk and full of hostels that put on something every night.

Before you book, check two things. The first is paperwork. Coming from Dublin on an Irish passport you need nothing extra, but visitors from the US and most of Europe need a 20-pound ETA, and the Home Office warns that copycat websites charge more for it. The second is budget: a pound buys about 1.34 dollars, and a simple meal in Edinburgh costs around 24 dollars.

For LGBTQ+ travellers the picture is patchier than elsewhere in northern Europe. Same-sex marriage has been legal since 2014, but the UK sits 22nd in the Rainbow Map 2026, and after the Supreme Court's April 2025 ruling the rules for trans people in single-sex spaces changed. Read the section below before you travel.

Who it's for / who it's not for

  • Travellers who want English-speaking cities linked by train
  • Anyone who loves pubs, live music and festivals
  • People happy to sort paperwork and bookings in advance
  • Anyone hoping to arrive without an ETA when they need one
  • Tight budgets
  • Sun-seekers

Same-sex relations are legal, civil partnerships date from 2005 and marriage equality from 2014, extended to Northern Ireland in 2020. Legal gender recognition follows the Gender Recognition Act 2004, with a diagnosis and two years lived in the acquired gender. In For Women Scotland on 16 April 2025 the Supreme Court held that sex in the Equality Act 2010 means biological sex. The UK is 22nd of 49 in the Rainbow Map 2026 with 43.90%, and 32nd in the Spartacus Gay Travel Index 2026.

Culture and customs

The pub is where you can be alone without anyone noticing. According to the ONS, 29.5% of UK households are a single person. Watch out for websites imitating the government's ETA service: the Home Office says they charge more than the official 20 pounds. In Edinburgh, a 5% visitor levy applies to the first five nights of paid accommodation from 24 July 2026.

Is the UK safe for solo travellers?

It is 39th of 163 in the Global Peace Index 2026 and 23rd of 181 in the Women, Peace and Security Index 2025/26. Italy's foreign ministry warns of frequent pickpocketing, especially in London, and a national terrorism threat level of severe.
