Americas

Big cities where going out alone is normal and neighbourhoods change block by block.

The short verdict

It depends on the city and the neighbourhood more than the country. New York, Montréal, Mexico City and Buenos Aires are places where going out alone takes no effort and the LGBTQ+ scene is large. In some areas safety changes from one block to the next, so choosing where to sleep matters more than elsewhere.

From the UK or Ireland the Americas are a long-haul trip with heavy jet lag, so plan for ten days or more. In return you get huge cities where nobody notices who eats alone, free or cheap museums and neighbourhood life you discover on foot.

The key word is neighbourhood. In Mexico City or Buenos Aires the gap between a calm area and one to avoid at night can be a single street. The city pages tell you where to stay and how to get back in the evening.
