Mexico

A huge country where your choice of region decides the trip

The short verdict

It depends on the region. Mexico City, Oaxaca and the Yucatán work well alone, with sociable hostels and low prices, while the FCDO advises against all but essential travel to whole states such as Guerrero, Michoacán, Sinaloa, Tamaulipas and Zacatecas. Good for travellers who plan their route and use safe transport, not for anyone improvising between states.

version v1 · How we calculate it

Mexico on your own is less one country than a patchwork of regions with different rules. The FCDO map and the US advisory matter more here than anywhere else in this guide: whole states such as Guerrero, Michoacán, Sinaloa, Tamaulipas and Zacatecas are no-go for non-essential travel, while Campeche and Yucatán sit at the US advisory's lowest level. Choose the states before you choose the sights.

Inside the places people travel, Mexico is generous to a party of one. Mexico City hostels run something every night, a dorm bed averages about 15 euros, under 13 pounds, and eating alone at a taco counter raises no eyebrows. The trade-off is constant discipline about transport: authorised taxis, ride-hailing apps and first-class buses on toll roads.

The FCDO's warnings for women are specific and worth reading in full: harassment and robbery on public transport, up to sexual assault, and sexual offences reported near hotels in tourist areas. It also flags spiked drinks and methanol-tainted alcohol. Sensible choices cut these risks a lot; they do not remove them.

One rule that catches people out: you cannot bring e-cigarettes into Mexico or buy them there, and smoking or vaping in a public place can mean a fine of up to 3,000 pesos, around 150 pounds by the FCDO's estimate.

Who it's for / who it's not for

  • Social travellers who want hostel company and low costs
  • Anyone into archaeology and street food
  • People who plan their route state by state
  • Travellers happy with first-class buses and trains
  • Road-trippers who want to improvise between states without checking advisories
  • Anyone unwilling to follow strict rules about night-time transport
  • People who struggle with altitude and cannot avoid Mexico City

Same-sex marriage is legal in every Mexican state. Rules on legal gender recognition differ from state to state, and the up-to-date picture is in the ILGA World Database. The FCDO warns that social acceptance lags behind the law.

Entry and documents

British citizens can visit Mexico for tourism without a visa, with a passport valid for the whole stay; check the FCDO entry requirements page for current rules, which is guidance rather than legal advice.

Culture and customs

Drink boiled or bottled water and skip ice, as both the FCDO and the Italian advice recommend. E-cigarettes are banned from import and sale, and public smoking or vaping can be fined up to 3,000 pesos. Drug convictions carry sentences of up to 25 years. Demonstrations are common in Mexico City and can turn tense; if you come across one, move away.

Frequently asked questions

Is Mexico safe for solo travellers?

It depends on where you go. Mexico ranks 139th of 163 in the Global Peace Index 2026. The FCDO advises against all but essential travel to all or parts of Guerrero, Michoacán, Sinaloa, Tamaulipas, Zacatecas, Colima and Chihuahua, while the US advisory, as summarised in the media, puts Campeche and Yucatán at Level 1.

Do I need a visa?

British citizens do not need a visa for tourism; the FCDO says 180 days is the longest you can stay as a tourist and your passport must be valid for the whole stay. If you arrive overland you need to complete an online immigration form.

How should I travel between cities?

The FCDO recommends first-class buses on toll roads, which have a lower rate of incidents than second and third-class buses on free roads. In the Yucatán the Tren Maya stops at Mérida.

Is Mexico safe for women travelling alone?

The FCDO says lone women on public transport have faced harassment and robbery as well as sexual assault, and that sexual offences have been reported near hotels in tourist areas. Book transport, keep your drink in sight and avoid arriving late in unfamiliar places.

What is Mexico like for LGBTQ+ travellers?

Same-sex marriage is legal nationwide. The FCDO describes same-sex relations as generally tolerated rather than accepted, and public affection may be frowned on.

When should I go?

Hurricane season runs from June to November on both coasts. Late October and early November bring the Day of the Dead, on UNESCO's intangible heritage list since 2008.
