Vietnam
Hostelworld's fastest riser, with 45 days visa-free
The short verdict
Yes, and for solo travellers on a budget it may now beat Thailand. It is third worldwide for solo bookings on Hostelworld, up 22% in two years, British passports get 45 days visa-free, and it ranks 41st on the Global Peace Index. The trade-offs are motorbike traffic, phone snatching and public hospitals well below UK standards.

version v1 · How we calculate it
Vietnam is catching Thailand. Between July 2025 and June 2026 it took 5.6% of Hostelworld's solo bookings, third in the world, after growing 22.3% in two years. Solo travellers from England, Germany, France and Ireland already put it in their top three. Hanoi dorms start around €4 on list prices, and Numbeo users put a cheap meal at 52,500 dong, about £1.50.
It's also calmer than its reputation. The Global Peace Index 2026 places it 41st, sixty spots above Thailand. Where you're really at risk is on the road. The FCDO says riding a motorbike in Vietnam is much riskier than in the UK, and the Italian foreign ministry advises against driving at night. Phone snatching by passing motorbikes is common enough that the FCDO tells you to hand over valuables rather than fight.
Plan for health care before you need it. Italy's foreign ministry describes public hospitals as well below European standards and points to private hospitals in Hanoi, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City, which ask for payment up front. Complex cases get flown to Bangkok or Singapore. Travel insurance with medical evacuation isn't optional here.
Who it's for / who it's not for
- Budget travellers who want a long stay without visa admin
- People who like crossing a long country by train or bus
- LGBTQ+ travellers looking for a country without criminalisation
- First-timers in Asia who want social hostels
- Anyone planning to ride a motorbike without real experience
- Travellers who may need complex medical care
- Same-sex couples who need their marriage recognised
- Anyone without health insurance
Safety
General
Vietnam ranks 41st on the Global Peace Index 2026. The documented risks are practical. Phone snatching from motorbikes aimed at people standing on pavements, rising around Christmas and Tết. Frequent road accidents. Cut-price cruises that may not meet basic safety standards. Isolated streets around train and bus stations. Italy's foreign ministry also reports foreigners stopped by police and made to pay fines for minor or non-existent offences.
Women
The FCDO reports indecent assaults and harassment, including groping while walking alone, often linked to unlicensed taxis. Victims face a higher burden of proof than in the UK, particularly if alcohol was involved or they knew the attacker.
LGBTQ+
No criminal penalties for same-sex activity or for changing gender, but same-sex marriage is not recognised. The FCDO describes Vietnam as generally tolerant.
Trans people
The FCDO notes no criminal penalties for changing gender. Advice on documents and airport screening must be written and reviewed by trans contributors before publication.
At night
Avoid cyclos and motorbike taxis at night, and don't drive after dark. Methanol in drinks has killed people in licensed bars, shops and hotels; you can't taste or smell it.
Common scams
Unlicensed taxis, so use Grab or Xanh SM and book the full trip in the app. Free airport or station shuttles you didn't arrange. Bike rental shops holding your passport against claimed damage. Too-good job offers that end with your passport confiscated.

- Legal gender

Same-sex relationships are not a crime, and the FCDO says there are no criminal penalties for changing gender. Same-sex marriage, though, has no legal recognition, so a marriage from the UK gives you no rights as a couple here. The country-by-country legal picture is in the ILGA World database. Emergency lines operate in Vietnamese only, which matters if you ever need to report an assault.
Entry and documents
British passport holders can visit visa-free for up to 45 days, or apply for a 90-day e-visa through the official Vietnamese portal; check the FCDO entry requirements page for current rules, as this is not legal advice.
Official source ↗Culture and customs
Politeness goes a long way, and Italy's foreign ministry asks visitors to avoid anything that might offend social, political or religious sensibilities. Some military areas are closed to foreigners without immigration authority permission. Vapes are banned: you can't bring, use or sell them. Drug laws are among the harshest anywhere, with three months to five years for use and the death penalty for the worst trafficking cases. The FCDO warns that a positive test can lead to charges even if you took something before arriving. To ride a motorbike you need the 1968-format international driving permit with your UK licence and third-party insurance. Helmets are compulsory for riders and passengers. Emergency lines and most police stations work in Vietnamese only, so bring someone who can translate if you have to report a crime.

Mid: a private hostel room (around €16 list on average), an entry ticket such as the Temple of Literature at 70,000 dong, some car rides. High: group activities and sit-down dinners. No upmarket hotels, because we have no verified prices. Vietcombank's transfer rate on 27 October 2026 was 33,889 dong to the pound, so the low budget is about £12.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a visa for Vietnam on a British passport?
Not for stays of up to 45 days. Check that the date stamped in your passport really is 45 days from arrival, because immigration won't correct it once you've left the airport. For longer trips there is a 90-day multiple-entry e-visa.
Is Vietnam safe for solo travellers?
It ranks 41st on the Global Peace Index 2026, sixty places above Thailand. The risks the FCDO names are traffic, phone snatching from motorbikes, unlicensed taxis and methanol in drinks, including from licensed bars.
What's the legal position for LGBTQ+ travellers?
Same-sex relationships are legal, and the FCDO says there are no criminal penalties for changing gender either. Same-sex marriage is not recognised. The FCDO calls Vietnam generally tolerant and progressive.
Is it OK for women travelling alone?
The FCDO reports indecent assault and groping, particularly when walking alone, often linked to unlicensed taxi drivers. Use Grab or Xanh SM and book the whole journey in the app.
How much does a day cost?
About 400,000 dong, roughly £12, on a dorm bed and street food in Hanoi. A private hostel room and an entry ticket or two takes you to a million dong, about £30.
When should I go?
It depends on the region. The north has a cooler, drier winter from November to April. Italy's foreign ministry puts the best months for central Vietnam at February to April. Typhoons can hit the east coast from May to November.
