The short verdict

It depends where: South-East Asia is the most practised region in the world for solo travel, with social hostels, cheap transport and street food built for one person. Japan and Taiwan are among the calmest places to walk around at night. The real homework is laws, visas and local rules before you book.

From London or Dublin, Asia means a long flight, but once you land you spend little and meet people quickly. Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Hanoi run partly on solo travellers: hostels with group dinners, cooking classes and day trips where everyone turns up alone.

Tokyo and Taipei work differently: less spontaneous socialising, but eating alone is normal and safety at night is among the highest you will find. Laws vary a lot, especially for LGBTQ+ travellers, so read the country page before you book.
