Czechia
Prague plus smaller cities by rail, low prices and few safety surprises.
The short verdict
Yes. Czechia is one of the easiest countries in Europe to travel alone: 13th of 163 in the Global Peace Index 2026, a rail network you can book on an app and low prices for pound or dollar earners. The risks are petty theft and money-changing scams in Prague. LGBTQ+ travellers will find partnerships recognised since 2025, though not marriage.

version v1 · How we calculate it
Czechia puts few obstacles in the way of anyone travelling alone. It is 13th of 163 in the Global Peace Index 2026, twenty-six places above the UK, and Czech Railways sells tickets on the Můj vlak app, so you can manage without a hire car. Prices are low by British standards: Numbeo users put a cheap restaurant meal in Prague at 230 koruna, about £8.
The problems are well known. In Prague the UK Foreign Office warns about pickpockets on transport from the airport and on the Castle trams, street money changers handing over fake notes and fake plain-clothes police. In bars, the risk of spiked drinks. These are risks you manage with a handful of rules, set out on the Prague page.
Two things that may surprise you. You are legally required to carry ID at all times and can be fined without it. And drug laws are harsh, with sentences of up to 18 years, including for transit through Czech airports.
Who it's for / who it's not for
- First-time solo travellers who want a straightforward capital
- Rail travellers moving between mid-sized cities without a car
- Anyone wanting museums and concerts on a modest budget
- Beach seekers
- LGBTQ+ travellers looking for full marriage equality
- Anyone unwilling to carry their passport everywhere
Safety
General
Czechia is 13th of 163 in the Global Peace Index 2026. The Foreign Office flags pickpocketing in Prague, money-changing scams and fake police, drink spiking in bars and club consumption cards that carry penalties if lost. Terrorist attacks cannot be ruled out. Protests have so far been peaceful.
Women
We found no recent official data on harassment that we could report with confidence. The specific risk the Foreign Office highlights is drink spiking in bars and clubs. Numbeo users score walking alone at night in Prague at 73.8 out of 100.
LGBTQ+
Same-sex relationships and partnerships are legal; marriage is not. The Foreign Office notes that public affection may attract unwanted attention.
Trans people
A 2023 Constitutional Court ruling removed the surgery and sterilisation requirement, and since July 2025 a psychologist's certification with informed consent is enough. ILGA-Europe wants compulsory divorce removed too. This section needs review by a trans person before publication.
At night
In the cities the documented night-time risks are theft and drinks rather than assault.
Common scams
Street money changing with counterfeit notes, fake police asking for cash and passports, unmarked taxis.

Czechia is 24th of 49 in ILGA-Europe's Rainbow Map 2026 (42% in the ranking table). From January 2025 a Civil Code reform turned registered partnerships into "partnerství", with rights such as joint property and survivor's pensions; marriage was not extended and adoption remains restricted. On gender: a 2023 Constitutional Court ruling, a European Court of Human Rights judgment in June 2025 against the sterilisation requirement, and a Ministry of Health methodology from July 2025. A draft law discussed in February 2026 proposed an expert committee and a one-year wait, and drew largely negative responses.
Entry and documents
Czechia is in the EU and Schengen; check passport validity and the Entry/Exit System rules on the official UK government page before you travel.

Carry ID at all times: police can fine or detain you without it, though they normally accept a passport scan. Some central Prague bars turn away stag groups, and drunken behaviour can mean a fine or a night in a sober-up facility you pay for. Validate paper transport tickets before boarding, and don't cross against the lights, which is also fined. Drink-driving fines run up to 50,000 koruna, about £1,700.

Frequently asked questions
Is Czechia safe for solo travellers?
It ranks 13th of 163 in the Global Peace Index 2026; the UK is 39th and the US 134th. The Foreign Office's main warnings are pickpocketing in Prague, street money changers with counterfeit notes, and drink spiking in bars.
What do UK travellers need to enter?
Czechia is in Schengen, so up to 90 days in any 180 without a visa. Your passport must have been issued less than 10 years before arrival and be valid for 3 months after you leave, and the EU Entry/Exit System registers fingerprints and a photo on first entry.
Do they use the euro?
No, the currency is the Czech koruna (CZK). At the ECB rate of 27 October 2026 a pound buys about 29 koruna and a dollar about 22. Change money only at banks or exchange offices.
What are LGBTQ+ rights like?
Czechia is 24th of 49 in the Rainbow Map 2026. Since January 2025 same-sex partnerships carry more rights, but marriage was not extended. Since July 2025 legal gender recognition no longer requires surgery or hormone treatment.
How do you get between cities?
By train with České dráhy, booked on the Můj vlak app. There are direct international services to Austria and Dresden, plus a EuroNight sleeper to Poprad-Tatry in Slovakia.
