Prague

A walkable centre, a seventy-metre bar and quiet neighbourhoods two tram stops away.

The short verdict

Yes, especially for a first solo city break: the centre is walkable, transport is cheap and Numbeo users rate it safer than Budapest. The real problems are pickpockets on the trams to the Castle and street money changers. If you want quiet at the weekend, stay in Vinohrady or Holešovice rather than the Old Town.

version v1 · How we calculate it

Prague is easy alone because it is compact and cheap to get around. Half an hour on the trams costs 36 koruna on the app, about £1.25. In a single day you can walk the Old Town, cross the bridge and climb through Malá Strana, and in the evening there is always a bar where nobody wonders why you are on your own. At Lokál Dlouhááá the bar is almost seventy metres long.

The centre is also where the trouble concentrates. The UK Foreign Office puts pickpockets first, on transport from the airport and on the Castle trams, then street money changers handing over counterfeit notes, and fake plain-clothes police who ask to see your cash. In clubs it warns about spiked drinks and consumption cards that carry a penalty if you lose them.

The simplest fix is to sleep outside the Old Town. Vinohrady, Žižkov and Holešovice are a few tram stops away, cost less and are calmer at night. Women travelling alone have an extra option close to the centre: two hostels that take women only.

Who it's for / who it's not for

  • First-time solo travellers who want a small, walkable capital
  • Women looking for a women-only hostel near the centre
  • Rail travellers pairing Prague with Vienna or Dresden
  • Winter travellers: the Christmas markets run from late November to early January
  • People who want an Old Town room and quiet on Saturday night
  • Anyone who won't keep track of ticket validation and 1,000-koruna fines
  • Those after a queer scene on the scale of Berlin's

Holešovice (Prague 7)

Getting back

Night buses 907 (via the main station and Karlovo náměstí) and 910 (via Kačerov) connect the airport and the city, about 45 minutes to the centre. In town, standard PID tickets apply: validate before boarding, as the on-the-spot fine is 1,000 koruna.

Avoid

Unmarked taxis. Use a major company and check the posted rates before getting in. At the airport Uber can be booked through the app or at a kiosk.

Frequently asked questions

Is Prague safe at night on your own?

Numbeo users score walking alone at night at 73.8 out of 100, and 91.6 by day. The UK Foreign Office flags pickpocketing on transport from the airport and on Castle trams, and drink spiking in bars and clubs.

How much does a day in Prague cost?

A dorm bed, two cheap meals and a 24-hour pass come to about 1,000 koruna, roughly £34 or $46. A private hostel room and a mid-range dinner push that towards 1,900 koruna, about £65. Prices checked in October 2026.

Are there women-only hostels in Prague?

Yes. Hostelworld lists Women's Only Hostel Prague, about 300 metres from the centre, and Luna Female Hostel, about 600 metres away, with dorm beds from roughly 12-16 euros in October 2026.

What's the easiest way to meet people?

Prague Pride's free English-language Queer Support Group, the tip-based walking tours, hostel bars such as Sir Toby's and Czech Inn, and the near-seventy-metre bar at Lokál Dlouhááá, where conversation with the next person along comes easily.

Is Prague a good choice for LGBTQ+ travellers?

Same-sex partnerships are recognised and gained more rights in 2025, but marriage is not open to same-sex couples. Czechia is 24th of 49 in the Rainbow Map 2026. Prague Pride is in August, and there is an LGBT+ community centre in the Old Town open on Thursdays.

How do I get from the airport into town?

Trolleybus 59 reaches Veleslavín on metro line A in about 15 minutes on a standard PID ticket. Night buses 907 and 910 run after hours. The Airport Express to the main station needs its own ticket.

What do I need to enter Czechia from the UK?

Czechia is in Schengen, so up to 90 days in any 180 without a visa. Your passport must be under 10 years old on arrival and valid for 3 months after you leave the Schengen area, and the EU Entry/Exit System takes fingerprints and a photo on first entry.
