Denmark

First for women's safety in the WPS Index, and priced like London

The short verdict

Yes, Denmark is one of the safest countries anywhere for travelling alone: first in the Women, Peace and Security Index 2025/26 and fifth in the Rainbow Map 2026. The problem is cost, with Copenhagen priced like London and Oslo according to its own tourist board. Suits people who love cycling, saunas and small cities.

version v1 · How we calculate it

Denmark is the country to pick if feeling safe matters most. It tops the Women, Peace and Security Index 2025/26, nearly half of all households are a single person, and nobody finds it odd that you eat, go to the cinema or sit in a sauna on your own. English is spoken almost everywhere: Denmark is seventh of 123 countries in the EF English Proficiency Index 2025, so you will rarely need a phrasebook, even outside Copenhagen.

Money is the catch. Visit Copenhagen compares the capital's cost level with London and Oslo, so Londoners will find it familiar and almost everyone else will find it steep. Take the rules seriously too: every illegal drug, cannabis included, is banned, Christiania included, and covering your face in public earns a fine.

The country is small and Odense and Aarhus are both reachable by train from Copenhagen. A week is enough for the capital and a couple of day trips; with two weeks you can cross Funen and Jutland all the way up to Skagen at the northern tip.

Who it's for / who it's not for

  • LGBTQ+ travellers wanting some of Europe's strongest legal protections
  • Anyone who loves saunas and harbour swims in the middle of a city
  • Travellers who want to get by entirely in English
  • Tight budgets
  • Anyone after cheap nightlife
  • People who struggle with dark, cold winters

Same-sex relations are legal. In 1989 Denmark became the first country in the world to introduce registered partnerships, which are no longer available to new couples; marriage equality followed in 2012. Since 2014 legal gender change has worked by self-determination with a reflection period, according to the ILGA World Database. Denmark is fifth of 49 in ILGA-Europe's Rainbow Map 2026 with 85.10%, and 15th in the Spartacus Gay Travel Index 2026.

Entry and documents

British visitors need no visa for short stays within the Schengen limit, but Schengen passport rules and the new Entry/Exit System apply, so read the current FCDO page before you travel.

Culture and customs

Two rules matter more than any others. Drugs, cannabis included, are banned even in small amounts, with sentences of up to 10 years according to the FCDO: Christiania is not an exception. And covering your face in public is illegal, with a fine of 1,000 kroner, around 115 pounds. Everyday life is otherwise straightforward: tipping is optional, tap water is drinkable and cards are accepted almost everywhere, though the 1,000-krone note stopped being valid in May 2025. According to Eurostat, 47.4% of Danish households are a single person.
