Copenhagen

A metro that never stops, saunas on the harbour, and London-level prices

The short verdict

Yes, if your budget can take it. Copenhagen is compact, the metro runs around the clock including to the airport, and Denmark tops the Women, Peace and Security Index 2025/26. Cost is the real obstacle: Visit Copenhagen puts a tight budget at about 700 kroner a day. Best for people who like bikes, saunas and harbour swims.

version v1 · How we calculate it

Copenhagen may be the easiest capital in northern Europe to do alone, provided you accept the bill. The metro runs 24 hours a day and goes to the airport, and nearly everything else is a short cycle or walk away. Visit Copenhagen itself compares the cost level with London and Oslo, and its tight-budget estimate of 700 kroner a day comes to about 78 pounds before you have sat down in a restaurant.

The weak spots are few and specific. Pickpockets work Central Station, Nørreport, Strøget and Christiania, and the FCDO advises extra care in Christiania and Nørrebro late at night because of gang violence. Winter days are short and dark. Danes are polite, but conversations with strangers rarely start on their own.

What works here is doing things alongside other people: a shared sauna session on the harbour, a hostel game night, a beer in a bar that has been part of LGBTQ+ history for decades. Drink the tap water, use the 60-plus public fountains, and do not worry about tipping, which is optional.

Who it's for / who it's not for

  • Anyone who wants a safe city to cover by bike and metro at any hour
  • Women travelling alone who put safety first
  • LGBTQ+ travellers looking for historic bars and a queer film festival
  • Sauna, cold-plunge and harbour-swim fans
  • Tight budgets that still want to eat out every night
  • Travellers hoping for easy chats with locals
  • Anyone who struggles with short winter days
