The short verdict

Yes for anyone wanting a small, orderly country where even the Tallinn tram takes a contactless card and Numbeo users rate the capital safer than Prague, Budapest or Ljubljana. Estonia is 25th of 163 in the Global Peace Index 2026. It depends on budget: nights out cost nearly as much as in Italy, at around 6 euros a beer.

version v1 · How we calculate it

Estonia is a country to travel with a bank card in your pocket. In Tallinn you pay for the tram by tapping it on the validator, public saunas are part of everyday life and Helsinki is a ferry ride away, with six departures a day. For a first solo trip to northern Europe it is an easy way in.

It is safe but not cheap. The country is 25th of 163 in the Global Peace Index 2026, and Numbeo users give Tallinn 78.6 out of 100. The UK Foreign Office still warns that drinks in bars are often stronger than at home, that unmarked taxis are illegal, and that drug offences carry up to 10 years in prison, including in transit. A beer in Tallinn costs around 6 euros, about £5.

On LGBTQ+ rights Estonia leads the Baltic states in the Rainbow Map 2026, 21st against Latvia's 32nd and Lithuania's 37th: marriage equality since 2024, and in 2026 Baltic Pride in Tallinn.

Estonia is 21st of 49 in ILGA-Europe's Rainbow Map 2026 (46%), holding its position. Same-sex marriage has been recognised since 1 January 2024. In December 2025 the government adopted a national LGBT equal opportunities action plan covering education and healthcare among other areas, with a review in 2027; civil society says its impact depends on funding. ILGA-Europe is calling for hate-crime laws that cover sexual orientation and gender identity.

Entry and documents

Estonia is in the EU and Schengen; check passport validity and the Entry/Exit System rules on the official UK government page before you travel.

Culture and customs

Drugs, cannabis included, are banned even in small amounts, with sentences of up to 10 years. The drink-drive limit is far lower than in the UK: the Foreign Office warns that going over a quarter of England's limit can mean a fine and prison. Don't flag down unmarked cars; unlicensed taxis are illegal. Keep your card in sight when paying. Bar measures are often stronger than you expect.
