The short verdict

Yes, if you want a tidy northern city where everything works alone, from public saunas to a day ferry to Helsinki: Numbeo users rate its safety at 78.6 out of 100. Evenings out are not cheap, with a half-litre of beer at about 6 euros. Anyone after midweek nightlife or warm weather should look elsewhere.

version v1 · How we calculate it

In Tallinn the things you do alone are the things everyone does. You go to a public sauna, eat lunch at the market, catch the morning ferry to Helsinki and come back for dinner. The old town is walkable and transport is paid by tapping your bank card on the validator: 2 euros an hour, capped automatically at a day ticket.

The catch is the bar bill. Numbeo users put a half-litre of beer at 6 euros, about £5, and a cheap meal at 15, both more than in Ljubljana and roughly double Budapest. Beds are cheap by comparison, with dorms from 8.50 euros, so your budget is decided in the evening rather than overnight.

On safety Tallinn does well, 78.6 out of 100 for Numbeo users. The UK Foreign Office still warns that pickpocketing concentrates in Old Town bars and clubs, that assaults, while rare, happen mainly late at night near nightlife, and that Estonian drinks are often stronger than British ones. Save your accommodation in your maps app before you head out.

Residents ride public transport free; visitors pay.

Going out

The Old Town has the bars and clubs, and that is where the Foreign Office flags pickpocketing. Fotografiska's rooftop bar and its Friday late opening until midnight make an alternative to a bar crawl.

Getting back

Night buses run on Friday and Saturday nights, about every 30 minutes from 00:30 to 03:30, on the same tickets as by day. For taxis use only cars with TAKSO signs, a price list and a meter, or the Bolt, Forus and Uber apps.

Avoid

Unmarked cars offering rides, which are illegal. Don't leave drinks unattended, and don't let anyone you're out with go home alone.

Getting around

From the airport, also at night

Tram 4 links the airport with Tondi, and buses 2 (stop by the multi-storey car park on Tartu maantee) and 65 also serve it. The 2-euro ticket is paid by contactless card on the validator; Ühiskaart cards are sold at the R-kiosk in arrivals. We found no official time for the last service, so if you land late use a signed taxi or an app.

In town

Contactless card on the validator, 2 euros an hour, converting automatically to a day ticket. On an Ühiskaart 5.50 euros a day, 9 for three days, 11 for five.
