Iceland

The world's most peaceful country, where weather and roads are the real risk

The short verdict

Yes, Iceland is the most peaceful country in the world according to the Global Peace Index 2026 and the top country for gay travellers in the Spartacus Index 2026. The real risk is nature: weather, sea and roads change fast, and living costs are high. Best for solo travellers who book group tours and bring a healthy budget.

version v1 · How we calculate it

Iceland is the most peaceful country in the world according to the Global Peace Index 2026, and you notice it: in Reykjavík the police are unarmed and crime is low. For anyone travelling alone, the real danger is outside the city. Weather turns within hours, road conditions need checking every day, and Italy's foreign ministry warns that eruptions can disrupt flights.

The other hurdle is price. A simple meal in Reykjavík costs around 23 pounds according to Numbeo users. On a mid-range budget, group tours from the capital often make more sense than a hire car, and for solo travellers they are also the easiest way to have company for the day. Whichever you choose, book tours and beds before you arrive, because the city is small.

Everything else is straightforward. Geothermal pools are a social ritual at 1,500 kronur, and for LGBTQ+ travellers Iceland tops the Spartacus Gay Travel Index 2026. Before every trip out of town, file a travel plan with Safetravel.

Who it's for / who it's not for

  • Anyone wanting the safest possible country for a solo trip
  • LGBTQ+ travellers looking for the strongest laws and welcome
  • Nature lovers willing to follow the weather rather than the plan
  • People who find their social life in geothermal pools
  • Tight budgets
  • Inexperienced winter drivers planning to self-drive alone in snow and wind
  • Anyone after big cities and nightlife

Entry and documents

British visitors need no visa for short stays within the Schengen limit, but Schengen passport rules and the new Entry/Exit System apply, so read the current FCDO page before you travel.

Culture and customs

The swimming pool is the centre of social life, and everyone showers fully without a swimsuit before getting in. All illegal drugs, cannabis included, are banned even in small amounts. Smoking and vaping are banned in restaurants, bars, public transport and public buildings. You do not have to carry your passport, the FCDO says, but some photo ID such as a photocard driving licence is sensible. Major cards are accepted almost everywhere, and cash over 10,000 euros or the equivalent must be declared at customs.

Frequently asked questions

Is Iceland safe for solo women?

It is first of 163 in the Global Peace Index 2026 and second of 181 in the Women, Peace and Security Index 2025/26. The FCDO calls crime levels low. The main risks are natural, so check eruption updates and road and weather conditions before every journey.

What do I need to enter Iceland from the UK?

Iceland is in Schengen, so the 90-in-180-day limit, Schengen passport rules and the EU Entry/Exit System apply. Check the current FCDO entry page before you travel.

Can I drive around Iceland alone?

Yes, but plan with Safetravel, which publishes travel conditions and lets you file a travel plan. The FCDO warns that getting too close to the sea, cliff edges and hot springs causes many accidents.

What are the laws for LGBTQ+ travellers?

Same-sex marriage has been legal since 2010 and legal gender change has worked by self-determination since 2019. Iceland is first in the Spartacus Gay Travel Index 2026 and third in the Rainbow Map 2026.

How expensive is it?

Very. In Reykjavík Numbeo users put a cheap restaurant meal at about 3,800 kronur, roughly 23 pounds. Council pools at 1,500 kronur are one of the few affordable treats.

Are there any rules I should know?

All illegal drugs, cannabis included, carry severe penalties even in small amounts. Smoking and vaping are banned in restaurants and bars, on public transport and in public buildings.
