Reykjavík

Small, safe, warm pools in every district, and painful bills

The short verdict

Yes, and it is a strong pick for a first solo trip abroad. Iceland tops both the Global Peace Index 2026 and the Spartacus Gay Travel Index 2026, the centre is walkable and a geothermal pool costs 1,500 kronur. The drawback is price: a simple meal runs to about 3,800 kronur, so come with a healthy budget.

version v1 · How we calculate it

Reykjavík is about as calm as capitals get, which makes it an easy first solo trip. Iceland tops the Global Peace Index 2026, the centre is small enough to walk end to end, and the police do not carry guns. Better still for late arrivals, the Flybus leaves after every flight, even at three in the morning, so you never have to race for a last train.

The bill is the shock. Numbeo users put a simple restaurant meal at about 3,800 kronur, roughly 23 pounds, and a cappuccino at around five. The city itself is done in two or three days; many people use it as a base for tours to waterfalls, glaciers and the northern lights, and out there the weather sets the rules. The FCDO lists the sea, cliff edges and hot springs among the most common causes of accidents.

Whatever else you do, go swimming. Council pools cost 1,500 kronur, open at 6.30am and are where locals talk in the hot tubs. In early November Iceland Airwaves fills the city's venues with gigs.

Who it's for / who it's not for

  • First-time solo travellers who want somewhere small and very safe
  • LGBTQ+ travellers heading for the top-rated country in the Spartacus Index

  • People who love geothermal pools and hot tubs
  • Tight budgets
  • Anyone wanting big, varied nightlife year-round
  • Inexperienced winter drivers planning to self-drive in snow and wind
  • Travellers staying more than three days without leaving the city

Frequently asked questions

Is Reykjavík safe for solo travellers?

Iceland is first of 163 in the Global Peace Index 2026 and second of 181 in the Women, Peace and Security Index 2025/26. The FCDO calls crime low, with some petty theft and antisocial behaviour around downtown bars. The bigger risks are outside the city, from weather and terrain.

How do I get from Keflavík airport if I land late at night?

The Flybus leaves 30 to 60 minutes after every arrival, day or night, and reaches BSÍ terminal in Reykjavík in about 45 minutes. Fares start at 3,999 kronur, roughly 25 pounds.

How expensive is Reykjavík?

Very. Numbeo users put a meal in an inexpensive restaurant at about 3,800 kronur, around 23 pounds, and a cappuccino at 825. The bargains are council pools at 1,500 kronur and buses at 690 a ride, capped at three rides a day.

What do I need to enter Iceland from the UK?

Iceland is in the Schengen area, so the 90-in-180-day rule, Schengen passport rules and the EU Entry/Exit System apply. Read the current FCDO entry page before you book.

Is Reykjavík good for LGBTQ+ travellers?

Yes. Iceland is first in the Spartacus Gay Travel Index 2026 and third in the Rainbow Map 2026. The city is too small for a gay district, but there are queer bars on Laugavegur and a Pride every summer since 1999.

Do I really have to shower naked at the pool?

Yes, a full wash without your swimsuit is compulsory before you get in. Changing rooms are split by gender, and some pools also have gender-neutral changing rooms and single showers.

What should I do before heading out of the city alone?

File a travel plan with Safetravel and install its app, which can send your GPS position to 112. The FCDO notes that getting too close to the sea, cliff edges and hot springs causes many accidents.
