Dublin
Live trad music every day, central hostels, and capital-city prices
The short verdict
Yes, if you want a city where talking to strangers in a pub is normal. Dublin has live traditional music every day, central hostels with female-only dorms and 24-hour buses from the airport. The downsides are cost, with a cheap meal at around 20 euros, and pickpocketing in Temple Bar and the north inner city.

version v1 · How we calculate it
Dublin is where being on your own matters least, because the pub exists to make conversation. At the Cobblestone in Smithfield there is live traditional music every single day, from mid-afternoon at weekends, and a pint at the bar is the quickest route into a chat. The central hostels are used to people travelling solo and have female-only dorms.
The catches are in your wallet and on the street. If you are coming from London the prices will not shock you, but anyone arriving from southern Europe will notice: Numbeo users put a cheap meal at around 20 euros. Italy's foreign ministry reports thefts and assaults on tourists in the centre, Temple Bar and the north inner city, especially in the evening. Temple Bar is worth walking through, less so at 2am.
The rest works in your favour. The national museums are free, Leap Card travel is capped at 6 euros a day, and buses run between the airport and the centre all night. Pack a waterproof whatever the season.

Safety
General
The FCDO advises precautions against bag-snatching and pickpocketing, most of it in larger cities, and says not to carry valuables or large amounts of cash. Italy's foreign ministry flags the airport, public transport and the tourist areas of the centre, Temple Bar and the north inner city. Ireland is fifth in the Global Peace Index 2026.
Women
Abbey Court, Generator and Jacobs Inn all have female-only dorms. In the evening, stick to main roads and night buses rather than long walks.
LGBTQ+
Strong legal protections and a visible community. LGBT Ireland runs the national helpline.
Trans people
Ireland has allowed legal gender recognition by self-determination since 2015, according to the ILGA World Database. TENI supports trans people and their families, and Outhouse runs T-Time for trans and non-binary people. This section needs review by a trans person before publication.
At night
The 24-hour routes and weekend Nitelinks cover the journey home. Keep an eye on your bag on board.
Common scams
The most common problem is pickpocketing in crowds. The FCDO also warns never to carry items for anyone else when entering or leaving the country.
