Malta

Small islands, cheap buses and some of Europe's strongest LGBTQ+ protections

The short verdict

Yes, for a short solo trip out of season. Distances are tiny, the bus costs 2 euros in winter, the hostels of Sliema and St Julian's run events, and Malta is second in Europe on the 2026 Rainbow Map. The drawbacks are the price of eating out, higher than in Portugal or Spain, and the drink spiking reported in Paceville.

version v1 · How we calculate it

Malta is a country of 588,254 people where distance is never the problem. In winter the bus costs 2 euros, a week's pass 25, and the ferry from Ċirkewwa to Gozo takes 25 minutes. For a solo traveller that means you can change plans every morning without a car.

On rights it is among the most advanced countries in Europe: second on the 2026 Rainbow Map with 88%, marriage equality since 2017 and a gender identity law since 2015.

Two things to know before booking. Eating out costs more than in Portugal or Spain, with Numbeo users estimating 20 euros for a cheap meal in Valletta. And nightlife is concentrated in Paceville, where the Foreign Office reports venues drugging customers to make them spend or to assault them. That is not a ban on going out; it is a reason to choose your venues and keep your eye on your glass.

Who it's for / who it's not for

  • Anyone after a short off-season trip using buses and ferries
  • LGBTQ+ travellers who want some of Europe's strongest legal protections
  • People who want group trips to Comino, Gozo and the coast through Meetup groups
  • Anyone looking for the cheapest place in the Mediterranean to eat out
  • People who want nightlife without watching their drink
  • Anyone hoping for stress-free driving

Entry and documents

For British passport holders, the current rules, including the 90 days in 180 limit and the EU Entry/Exit System, are on the GOV.UK Malta entry requirements page. Check it before booking; this is not legal advice.

Culture and customs

St John's Co-Cathedral closes on Sundays and public holidays, so plan Valletta around it. The environmental contribution is charged on top of the room rate, and your accommodation may ask for ID to check your age and length of stay. The Foreign Office advises against diving into unfamiliar water, since hidden rocks, shallows and currents cause accidents every year.

Frequently asked questions

Is Malta safe for solo travellers?

Malta is not included in the 2026 Global Peace Index. The UK Foreign Office reports thefts on crowded buses between Valletta and St Julian's and customers being drugged in some Paceville venues. It also notes that people drown every year; a red flag means stay out of the water.

Is Malta expensive?

Below the EU average on paper, since Eurostat put its 2024 price level for restaurants and hotels at 88.7, with the EU at 100. On the ground, Numbeo users estimate 20 euros for a cheap meal in Valletta, more than in Lisbon or Porto. Since July 2026 there is a 1.50 euro nightly environmental contribution for over-18s, capped at 22.50 per visit.

What is the situation for LGBTQ+ travellers?

Malta is second of 49 on ILGA-Europe's 2026 Rainbow Map with 88%, behind Spain. It has had marriage equality since 2017, a gender identity and expression law since 2015 and a 2016 act affirming sexual orientation and gender identity.

Do I need a car?

Not for a solo trip. The bus is 2 euros from mid-October to mid-June and 2.50 in summer, the 7-day Explore card is 25 euros, and the Ċirkewwa to Gozo ferry takes about 25 minutes. The Foreign Office adds that local driving standards are poor, though a UK photocard licence is valid.

What about healthcare and entry from the UK?

For medically necessary state healthcare you need a GHIC or EHIC, which does not replace travel insurance. Malta is in Schengen, so the 90 days in 180 rule and the EU Entry/Exit System apply to British passport holders. Check GOV.UK before travelling.
