Valletta

A tiny capital, social hostels in Sliema and St Julian's, and a ferry in between

The short verdict

Yes, but treat it as a base shared with Sliema or St Julian's. Valletta has barely 5,000 residents, few hostels and quiet evenings; the social hostels and cheap dorms are across the harbour, a 3 euro ferry away. Malta is second on the 2026 Rainbow Map. In Paceville, the Foreign Office warns about spiked drinks and padded bills.

version v1 · How we calculate it

Valletta is a small capital, 5,157 residents at the 2021 census against 5,748 in 2011. You can walk it in half a day, and in the evening, outside the restaurants, there is not much going on. For a solo traveller that is the point to grasp: the sights are here, the people are elsewhere.

Elsewhere means Sliema and St Julian's, across the harbour. That is where almost all the island's hostels are, with dorms from 14 to 23 euros on Hostelworld and event calendars. The Sliema to Valletta ferry costs 3 euros by day and 3.50 after 7.30pm. The approach that makes sense is to sleep in Sliema, spend your days in Valletta and decide each evening where to go.

The flaw to know about is Paceville, St Julian's nightlife strip. The Foreign Office says some bars and clubs there have drugged customers to make them spend heavily or to assault them. That is no reason to stay in, but it is a reason to choose where you go, buy your own drinks and check the bill. For anyone flying in from the UK or Ireland, the other surprise is the price of eating out, higher than in Lisbon or Porto.

Who it's for / who it's not for

  • LGBTQ+ travellers who want one of Europe's strongest legal frameworks

  • Anyone hoping for a cheap hostel inside Valletta's walls
  • People who want nightlife without watching their drink
