Slovenia
Fourth in the world for peace, with mountains and a small, calm capital.
The short verdict
Yes. Slovenia is one of the most peaceful countries on earth for travelling alone, fourth of 163 in the Global Peace Index 2026, and it suits walkers and anyone who likes small cities. The drawbacks are prices only slightly below Italy's and little nightlife outside Ljubljana. Mountain rules on bears and wild camping need taking seriously.

version v1 · How we calculate it
Slovenia is the most peaceful country covered in this section: fourth of 163 in the Global Peace Index 2026, thirty-five places above the UK. It is small enough that Ljubljana can serve as a base for most of it, and the capital is calm enough that being alone there never feels conspicuous.
Its best side is outdoors, among lakes and mountains, and that is where the rules matter. The UK Foreign Office notes that bears and wolves live in mountain areas and that bears turn up in woodland even near towns. Wild camping is illegal, with fines up to 500 euros, and enforcement in Triglav National Park is strict. Plan your route, tell someone where you are going and check the mountain huts are open.
Don't expect Eastern European prices. A simple meal in Ljubljana costs around 14 euros, about £12, and a hostel bed starts at 13. For drivers the details differ from home: a 0.05% alcohol limit (lower than England's), an e-vignette for motorways and compulsory winter kit from mid-November.
Who it's for / who it's not for
- Walkers who want a safe base for mountain days
- Travellers combining Slovenia with Trieste or Venice by coach
- Anyone who likes small, quiet cities
- People who want nightlife every evening outside Ljubljana
- Budget travellers expecting Budapest prices
- Anyone hoping to pitch a tent wherever they like
Safety
General
Slovenia is fourth of 163 in the Global Peace Index 2026. The Foreign Office says terrorist attacks cannot be ruled out and flags sudden storms, flash floods, wildfires in dry spells and occasional earthquakes in the west. National siren tests run at noon on the first Saturday of each month; if you hear one at any other time, follow official instructions.
Women
We found no recent official data on harassment that we could report with confidence. In Ljubljana Numbeo users score walking alone at night at 76.2 out of 100.
LGBTQ+
Marriage is defined as a union of two people. ILGA-Europe nevertheless reports counter-protests and objects thrown at Maribor Pride on 7 June 2025 and harassment at Ljubljana Pride on 14 June 2025. In February 2026 the Interior Ministry acknowledged that Maribor police had acted unlawfully.
Trans people
The Ministry of Health confirmed in 2024 that legal gender recognition does not require medical treatment, but the Civil Registry Act has not yet been amended. This section needs review by a trans person before publication.
At night
Cities are small and walks home are short. In the mountains, never set off late.
Common scams
Licensed tour guides must display a registration card. For motorway breakdowns use only recovery firms with the DARS logo; others may charge high fees.

Slovenia is 17th of 49 in ILGA-Europe's Rainbow Map 2026 (54%), unchanged in rank with four extra points. The law defines marriage as a life union of two people. In June 2025 the National Assembly amended the infertility treatment law after a Constitutional Court ruling, in force from November, to include single women and female couples. There was no legislative progress on gender recognition in 2025. Pride events in Maribor and Ljubljana in 2025 faced counter-protests, and ILGA-Europe is calling for hate-crime laws that explicitly name sexual orientation and gender identity.
Entry and documents
Slovenia is in the EU and Schengen; check passport validity and the Entry/Exit System rules on the official UK government page before you travel.
Official source ↗Culture and customs
Carry at least a copy of your passport: without ID police can fine you 50 to 200 euros. Cross only at designated crossings, as jaywalking fines are heavy. The drink-drive limit is 0.05%, and zero for drivers under 21 or with a licence held under two years. Motorways need an e-vignette and winter equipment is compulsory from 15 November to 15 March. Licensed tour guides display a registration card.

Frequently asked questions
Is Slovenia safe for solo travellers?
It ranks fourth of 163 in the Global Peace Index 2026; the UK is 39th and the US 134th. The UK Foreign Office reports no specific crime problem against tourists but warns of bears and wolves in the mountains, sudden storms and flash floods, and occasional earthquakes in the west.
What do UK travellers need to enter?
Slovenia is in Schengen, so up to 90 days in any 180 without a visa. Your passport must be under 10 years old on arrival and valid for 3 months after you leave, and the EU Entry/Exit System registers fingerprints and a photo on first entry.
What are the emergency numbers?
113 for police and 112 for ambulance, fire and mountain rescue. For motorway breakdowns, 1970.
What are LGBTQ+ rights like?
Slovenia is 17th of 49 in the Rainbow Map 2026. The law defines marriage as a union of two people, and since November 2025 fertility treatment is open to single women and female couples. Pride marches in Maribor and Ljubljana in 2025 faced counter-protests and harassment.
Will a UK health card work?
You need a GHIC or EHIC to get medically necessary state healthcare, but it doesn't replace travel insurance, which covers private care and repatriation. In an emergency dial 112 and ask for an ambulance.
