The short verdict

Yes, if you want a small, calm capital where being alone is effortless: the centre is pedestrianised and Numbeo users rate it safer than Prague or Budapest. It depends if you want big nights out every evening, because away from Metelkova the city turns in early. It is pricier than Prague: a cheap meal costs around 14 euros.

version v1 · How we calculate it

Ljubljana is the easiest capital in this part of Europe for anyone who wants to be alone without feeling watched. The old centre is pedestrianised, and free electric Kavalir buggies run inside the zone for anyone who struggles to walk far. Numbeo users give it a safety index of 78 out of 100, ahead of Prague (75) and Budapest (66).

It is not cheap in the way Prague or Budapest are. Numbeo users put a simple restaurant meal at around 14 euros, about £12, and a dorm bed starts at 13-15 euros. In the evenings, away from Metelkova, the city goes quiet early. If you want a night that runs until dawn every day of the week, look elsewhere.

If you are combining Slovenia with Italy, direct coaches from Trieste and Venice make Ljubljana an easy add-on, and Trieste is on the international rail network too.

What it does well is pace. A morning at the market, an afternoon on the castle tour, a Tuesday concert at Hostel Celica, a former prison whose cells are now artist-designed rooms. Add a day in the mountains, with the Foreign Office's advice on bears and closed huts in mind, and a long weekend fills itself.

Who it's for / who it's not for

  • First-time solo travellers who want somewhere small and calm
  • Walkers and anyone who likes eating outdoors from March to November
  • People using the city as a base for mountain walks
  • Rail and coach travellers combining Slovenia with Trieste or Venice
  • Anyone wanting late nights out every evening
  • Budget travellers expecting Budapest prices
  • Those after a queer scene with lots of venues

Getting back

The centre is small and you walk home. On city buses pay with an Urbana card or a contactless bank card (bank cards don't get the free 90-minute transfer). For taxis, the tourist board explains how to check fares before you get in.

Avoid

Crossing outside designated crossings, even on empty streets at night. The Foreign Office warns fines are heavy and unpaid ones can lead to documents or belongings being confiscated.

Getting around

From the airport, also at night

A scheduled bus links the airport with the central station, tickets on board or from the machine. We found no official time for the last departure, so if you land late book a shuttle (GoOpti, Nomago, MNJ, Markun, ZUP) or take a taxi from outside the terminal, about 20 minutes.

In town

You walk in the centre. On city buses, pay with an Urbana card (also virtual, in the app) or a contactless bank card. The BicikeLJ bike share has stations across the wider centre, and Kavalir buggies are free in the pedestrian zone.

Frequently asked questions

Is Ljubljana safe for solo travellers?

Numbeo users (326 contributions) give it a safety index of 78.2 out of 100 and 76.2 for walking alone at night, higher than Prague or Budapest. The UK Foreign Office notes you can be fined 50 to 200 euros if you can't show ID to police.

How much does a day in Ljubljana cost?

A dorm bed, two cheap meals and a few bus rides come to about 50 euros, roughly £42. Numbeo users put a cheap restaurant meal at 14 euros and a half-litre of beer at 3.50.

How do I get from the airport to the centre?

A scheduled bus links Jože Pučnik airport, about 26 km out, with the central bus and train station; buy the ticket on board or from the machine at the stop. By car it takes about 20 minutes, and shuttle firms include GoOpti and Nomago.

How do you meet people in Ljubljana?

Tuesday concerts at Hostel Celica, Friday Open Kitchen on Pogačarjev trg in season, the guided city tour included in the Ljubljana Card, and Klub Tiffany events for LGBTQ+ travellers.

Is Ljubljana good for LGBTQ+ travellers?

Slovenia is 17th of 49 in the Rainbow Map 2026, and the law defines marriage as a union of two people. At Pride on 14 June 2025, however, ILGA-Europe recorded eggs thrown, flags torn down and harassment, mostly during the evening programme.

Do I need anything to enter Slovenia from the UK?

Slovenia is in Schengen, so up to 90 days in any 180 without a visa. Your passport must be under 10 years old on arrival and valid for 3 months after you leave, and the EU Entry/Exit System records fingerprints and a photo on first entry.

When should I go?

March to November, when Open Kitchen runs on sunny Fridays. Pride is in June and the Slovenian Wine Festival is at Cankarjev dom in November.
