Cape Town

Mountain, ocean and sociable hostels, as long as you skip walking after dark

The short verdict

It depends on how much planning you will put in. Hostels in Gardens and Green Point run group hikes up Table Mountain and Lion's Head, so company is easy to find. But crime is high even in tourist areas, quiet trails have seen violent robberies and walking after dark is off the table. It works for people who move in groups and by app, not for lone wanderers.

version v1 · How we calculate it

Cape Town alone is spectacular and logistically demanding. The Atlantic on one side, Table Mountain on the other, hostels running hikes and dinners every day, and a list of things not to do that you should take literally. Do not walk after dark. Never hike quiet trails alone. And ignore the stranger offering a lift at the airport.

The official advice leaves little room for interpretation. The FCDO describes high crime across South Africa, including violent muggings, carjacking, sexual assault and murder, in tourist destinations as well as townships, and higher risk after dark. Italy's foreign ministry asks for particular caution on Long Street, in inner Bo-Kaap and around nightlife, and says to avoid the Cape Flats and the roads that skirt them at night. Police statistics sharpen the picture: murders cluster in Cape Flats townships such as Mfuleni, Delft, Gugulethu, Khayelitsha and Philippi East, five of the country's top seven stations for murder in January-March 2026. The city centre, by contrast, tops the national list for reported serious crime and common robbery: less lethal violence, far more theft.

There is a way of travelling here that works, and it is not complicated. Stay in Gardens, Kloof Street or Green Point, do the mountain with a hostel group, use ride-hailing after dark and keep your phone out of sight on the street. Visit townships only by day and with accredited operators, as the Italian advice says.

For UK travellers the clock is only one or two hours ahead of London, so jet lag will not cost you the first group hike. And one date for the diary: Cape Town hosts WorldPride 2028.

Who it's for / who it's not for

  • Outdoor lovers willing to hike in groups
  • Anyone who wants a sociable hostel with something on every day
  • Travellers happy to use ride-hailing and give up walking at night
  • LGBTQ+ travellers looking for constitutional protection and a major 2028 event
  • People who want to stroll alone in the evening or hike solo
  • Anyone who does not want to think about safety on every journey
  • Rock-bottom budgets that cannot stretch to evening app rides

How to meet people

Hikes and activities at Never At Home

Both sites, on Kloof Street and in Green Point, run a group activity every day, including free yoga, beach yoga with a cold plunge, Table Mountain and Lion's Head hikes and market visits. It is also the practical answer to the FCDO's advice to hike in groups.

Things to do alone

Table Mountain by cableway

First car up at 8:30am, last up at 6pm, last down at 7pm. The cableway may close in bad weather, so check the site that morning.

Daily, 8:30am-7pm

Lion's Head with a group

With a hostel group and never solo: the FCDO reports violent robberies on Lion's Head and Signal Hill and recommends groups of four or more.

Beach yoga with a cold plunge

One of Never At Home Green Point's free activities. The Atlantic here is cold, and doing it in a group helps.

Stellenbosch wine day

Never At Home sells it as a paid tour and Big Blue arranges Winelands trips. For a solo traveller it saves driving.

Cape Peninsula by tour

Never At Home runs a peninsula tour and Big Blue arranges Cape Point trips. The Italian advice urges caution at scenic stops too, such as Chapman's Peak Drive, particularly at sunset.

Eating alone

Neighbourgoods Market at the Old Biscuit Mill

Food stalls and shared tables on Saturdays and Sundays from 9am. The easiest solo lunch in town.

373-375 Albert Road, Woodstock

The hostel braai

Never At Home Kloof Street's Bring n' Braai and the courtyard braais at Long Street Backpackers: bring your own meat or veg and eat with the other guests.

Lunch at an inexpensive restaurant

Numbeo users put a meal at an inexpensive restaurant at about 200 rand, roughly 9 pounds or 12 dollars. Eating out at lunch rather than dinner also solves the getting-home-after-dark problem.

About ZAR 200 (Numbeo)

At night

Going out

Kloof Street for dinner and drinks, Long Street for backpacker bars, and hostel-run evenings. Many people go out with their hostel group.

Getting back

Ride-hailing booked through the app only, waiting somewhere safe rather than on the street and checking the registration and driver ID, as the FCDO advises. Do not accept lifts from people you have just met.

Avoid

Walking after dark, even for a few blocks. Isolated beaches and trails in the evening, and parks. The Cape Flats and the N1 and N2 alongside them at night, where the Italian advice reports rocks thrown from bridges.

On paper the protection is strong, with a constitutional ban on discrimination by sexual orientation and same-sex marriage since 2006, and Cape Town will host WorldPride 2028. We have not yet verified current venues or this year's city Pride dates and will add them when we can. On dating apps, the FCDO warning about app-arranged robberies applies.

Dating

TinderBumbleGrindrHinge

Suggest a first date in daylight or early evening at a busy venue, so the trip home is not after dark.

The FCDO says criminals use dating apps to rob, rape or sexually assault victims, and warns of romance scams that end in requests for money. Meet in a public, well-lit place, travel home in your own app ride, tell someone where you are and never send money to someone you have not met.

  • Mid ZAR 1,300per day
  • High ZAR 2,500per day

Checked 27 October 2026. Low: a dorm bed (EUR 15-22 on Hostelworld, about 280-410 rand at the ECB rate of 18.5633), two inexpensive meals at 200 rand each according to Numbeo users, and a couple of rides (23 rand for a local ticket on Numbeo). Mid adds a mid-range dinner (750 rand for two on Numbeo, so 375 each) and a paid activity or an evening app ride. High is an editorial estimate with a private room and tours. At ECB rates, 800 rand is about GBP 36 or USD 48. Evening ride-hailing is not a luxury here but a fixed line in the budget.

Getting around

From the airport, also at night

The FCDO reports an increase in violent crime on routes to and from the airport. Drivers should stay on the M3 and N2 rather than the R300 and use the airport approach road (N2 exit 16), not Borcherd's Quarry Road towards Nyanga. Beware unregulated drivers posing as ride-hailing drivers at the airport, and wait in designated pick-up areas.

In town

In the city, ride-hailing is the safer option after dark, with the FCDO's precautions. Minibus taxis are minimally regulated and driving is often erratic. For day trips, hostel tours spare you the drive.

Frequently asked questions

Is Cape Town safe for solo travellers?

People travel here, but by firm rules. The FCDO says crime is high across South Africa, including in tourist areas, and the risk rises after dark. Italy's foreign ministry flags Long Street, inner Bo-Kaap and nightlife areas, and says to avoid the Cape Flats. In January-March 2026 the central police station recorded more serious reported crimes than any other station in the country.

Is it safe for a woman travelling alone?

The FCDO says solo and women travellers have received unwanted attention and been assaulted, and that criminals use dating apps to rob, rape or sexually assault victims. Book a women-only dorm, get home by app, keep your drink in sight and do not walk after sunset.

Can I hike Table Mountain or Lion's Head on my own?

Better not. The FCDO reports violent attacks and muggings on hikers in Table Mountain National Park, including Lion's Head and Signal Hill, and advises busy marked trails, popular days such as weekends and groups of four or more. Never At Home hostels run group hikes, or take the cableway, which opens at 8:30am with the last car up at 6pm.

How much does a day cost?

A dorm bed, two cheap meals and a couple of rides come to about 800 rand, roughly 36 pounds or 48 dollars at 27 October 2026 rates. Add a mid-range dinner and a paid activity and you are nearer 1,300 rand.

How do I get from the airport at night?

The FCDO reports an increase in violent crime on routes to and from Cape Town airport. If you drive, stay on the M3 and N2 rather than the R300, and use the airport approach road at N2 exit 16, not Borcherd's Quarry Road towards Nyanga. If you use ride-hailing, book only in the app and check the registration and driver ID.

Is Cape Town good for LGBTQ+ travellers?

On paper, yes. The Constitution prohibits discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation, same-sex couples can marry under the Civil Union Act of 2006, and Cape Town will host WorldPride 2028. Be careful with dating apps, which the FCDO says criminals use to set up robberies and assaults.

Where do I meet people?

At hostels with daily activities such as the two Never At Home sites, at Green Point parkrun on Saturdays at 8am, which is free, and at the Neighbourgoods Market at the Old Biscuit Mill on Saturdays and Sundays from 9am.
