New York

The subway never stops, but every night out costs you

The short verdict

Yes, if your budget can take it: the subway runs 24/7, volunteer greeters will show you around for free, and New York State tops Spartacus's state-by-state index. The problem is price. A dorm bed averages about $43 a night and a cheap meal runs $28, so travelers on a tight budget need to plan where every dollar goes.

version v1 · How we calculate it

New York is a city where being on your own is the default setting. Nobody notices if you eat at the counter, walk into a museum alone or ride the subway at 3am, because the subway really does run 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. For a solo traveler that's a huge advantage: the night ends when you decide, not when the last train leaves.

The catch is the check. Numbeo users put a cheap meal at $28 and a beer at $8, and Hostelworld's dorm beds start at an average of about $43. You can do the city for around $110 a day, but that means market food and a lot of walking. The single supplement here isn't a percentage; it's the difference between a pod the size of a closet and a real room.

The official safety advice is measured. The UK Foreign Office says violent crime rarely touches tourists but advises against walking alone through empty areas at night. Italy's foreign ministry notes a nationwide rise in violent crime and, in New York specifically, counterfeit electronics in the small shops around Times Square.

For LGBTQ+ travelers New York is the exception in a divided country: the state ranks first in Spartacus's state-by-state index, while the US as a whole sits 47th. Trans travelers should still read the federal rules on documents carefully, because they apply here too.

Flying in from London or Dublin, you'll need an approved ESTA before you board. Your pound goes about as far as $1.33 at late-October rates, which makes that $28 meal roughly £21.

Who it's for / who it's not for

  • Anyone who wants to stay out late without worrying about the last train
  • First-time solo travelers who want a city where nobody notices them

  • Museum lovers, park people and serious walkers
  • Budgets under $100 a day that won't compromise
  • Anyone expecting a roomy single room at a mid-range price
  • Anyone after a slow, quiet vacation

Frequently asked questions

Is New York safe for a woman traveling alone at night?

The UK Foreign Office says violent and gun crime rarely affect tourists, but advises against walking alone in quiet areas, especially at night. On the subway, the MTA suggests boarding near the middle of the train, where the conductor usually is, and using the blue Help Point intercoms.

How much does a day in New York cost alone?

About $110 (roughly £83) on a dorm bed and cheap meals, about $170 (£128) with a private room or pod and one sit-down dinner. Numbeo users put a cheap meal at $28 and a beer at $8 in October 2026.

How do you meet people in New York?

Big Apple Greeter is the easiest start: a volunteer spends two to four hours with you, free. HI New York City Hostel runs welcome parties, comedy nights and free walking tours, and Free Tours by Foot has pay-what-you-wish walks.

How do I get from JFK at night?

The subway runs all night. A yellow cab from JFK to Manhattan is a $70 flat fare plus surcharges and tolls, tip extra. Turn down anyone offering a ride who isn't in an official uniform.

Is New York good for LGBTQ+ travelers?

Yes, and it's the best-protected part of the US: New York State ranks first in Spartacus's 2026 state index. The West Village has the Stonewall National Monument and long-running bars; the 2026 Pride March was on June 28.

What should trans travelers know about entering the US?

Since 2025, US federal documents for Americans show sex at birth. If you're on a foreign passport, the UK Foreign Office says travelers whose passport sex differs from their sex recorded at birth should contact the US Embassy for advice, and a change of sex on your documents means applying for a new ESTA.

Where should I stay alone?

The Upper West Side for a big hostel with activities, the West Village for the LGBTQ+ scene and tiny rooms at 113 Jane Street, Midtown for a pod in the middle of everything, North Williamsburg if you'd rather be in Brooklyn.
