Mexico City

Sociable hostels and taco counters, with firm rules on taxis after dark

The short verdict

It depends on where you sleep and how you get around. In Roma, Condesa, the Centro and Coyoacán, hostels run something most nights and meeting people is easy. The real risks are unlicensed taxis, express kidnappings and spiked drinks, all spelled out by the FCDO. It works well for people who stick to app cabs at night, far less for those who improvise.

version v1 · How we calculate it

Mexico City is one of the easiest cities in the Americas to make friends in, and one of the strictest about the basics. Both are true at once. Hostels in the Centro, Roma and Condesa run something almost every day, from lucha libre nights to boat trips at Xochimilco, and an average dorm bed costs about 15 euros, under 13 pounds. What matters most is not where you eat dinner but how you get home afterwards.

The official advice is detailed and worth reading as written. The FCDO reports robberies and assaults by unlicensed taxi drivers in the city, short opportunistic kidnappings in which victims are forced to empty accounts at ATMs, and robberies after drinks were spiked. It also notes protests against gentrification in central and tourist areas since July 2025. Italy's foreign ministry adds theft in crowded places such as the metro, bus terminals and markets, and names Tepito and Iztapalapa as areas to avoid. None of this is a reason to skip the city. It is a reason to book every night-time ride through an app.

For American readers, the US advisory as summarised by the media puts Mexico City at Level 2, the same level as the country overall, while several western and northern states sit at Level 4. For context, INEGI's June 2026 urban survey found 59.8 per cent of adults in Mexican cities feel unsafe where they live, but in the Benito Juárez borough (Del Valle, Nápoles) the figure falls to 17.4. Neighbourhood choice really does change the trip.

The city is high up, and the Italian advice urges caution for anyone with heart or breathing problems, also because of pollution. Take the first two days slowly.

Who it's for / who it's not for

  • Solo travellers who want instant company through hostel activities
  • Museum and street-food people who explore on foot by day
  • Budget travellers, given dorm prices
  • Anyone happy to use app cabs and authorised taxis without exception
  • People who want to walk between neighbourhoods alone late at night
  • Travellers with serious heart or respiratory conditions who cannot manage altitude and smog
  • Anyone looking for a quiet city

First dates are often dinner or drinks in Roma or Condesa, and later in the evening than in the UK.

The FCDO reports robberies and assaults after drinks were spiked. Meet somewhere public, go home in your own app cab rather than with someone you just met, and tell someone where you are.

Getting around

From the airport, also at night

At the airport the FCDO says to use only authorised pre-paid taxis, which AICM lists among its ground transport options. Ignore offers of rides in the arrivals hall.

In town

The metro and Metrobús cover the city, but the Italian advice flags theft in crowded places like the metro and urges maximum caution on public transport. By day, Ecobici at 134 pesos a day works well in the central neighbourhoods. For earthquakes, the FCDO points to the 911 CDMX app, which can give up to 60 seconds' warning.

Is it safe for a woman travelling alone?

The FCDO states that women travelling alone on public transport in Mexico have faced harassment and robbery, and sexual assault, and that sexual offences have been reported near hotels in tourist areas.
