The short verdict

Yes, as long as you take a few hard rules seriously. Hostelworld's 2026 data puts Thailand first worldwide for solo bookings, so company is never far away, and same-sex marriage has been legal since January 2025. The catch: vaping is a criminal offence, insulting the monarchy carries prison terms, and visa-free stays dropped to 30 days in September 2026.

version v1 · How we calculate it

If you have never travelled alone, Thailand is the easy answer, and the numbers back it up. Between July 2025 and June 2026 it took 7.6% of all solo bookings on Hostelworld, the highest share of any country. In practice that means hostels with a bar downstairs, bike tours and cooking classes where most people turned up on their own. You don't go looking for company. It finds you at breakfast.

The trade-off is a legal system with sharper edges than the UK's. Vaping is banned outright, and the FCDO is blunt that there are no exceptions for tourists. Lèse-majesté carries three to fifteen years per count, and it can cover a private message or a social post. Italy's foreign ministry even notes defamation complaints against people who left very negative hotel reviews.

One more thing worth reading slowly: for the first time since Hostelworld started tracking, Thai solo bookings fell, by 5.3%. Thailand still leads. Vietnam is closing in, and it is a 45-day visa-free stay away.

Who it's for / who it's not for

  • First-time solo travellers who want company without effort
  • Same-sex couples and LGBTQ+ travellers looking for a country with marriage equality
  • Backpackers who want city, mountains and beaches on one ticket
  • Remote workers looking for coworking spaces and a nomad crowd
  • Anyone who can't go a month without vaping
  • Long-stayers who don't want to deal with visas beyond 30 days
  • Trans travellers who need Thai paperwork to match their gender
  • People with asthma heading north during the crop-burning haze

The Marriage Equality Act cleared the Senate on 18 June 2024 and came into force on 23 January 2025, making Thailand the third place in Asia to allow same-sex marriage after Taiwan and Nepal. AP reported 1,832 same-sex couples married on the first day. ILGA Asia flags the gaps. There is no legal gender recognition for trans and non-binary people, and the law still says "father" and "mother" rather than "parent", which may complicate adoption. The broader legal picture is in the ILGA World database.

Entry and documents

British passport holders can stay visa-free for up to 30 days for tourism from 15 September 2026 and must complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card before arrival; check the FCDO entry requirements page for current rules, as this is not legal advice.

Culture and customs

The rule that matters most is about the monarchy. Article 112 of the criminal code punishes lèse-majesté with three to fifteen years per count, and it applies to private conversations, social posts and acts against the national flag. Skip the jokes, including in English, including in a bar. The FCDO adds that posting photos of people drinking, or dressed in ways considered inappropriate, can also be illegal. Smoking in a banned public place costs up to 5,000 baht. Cannabis is medical-only and needs a Thai prescription, and taking it out of the country is a crime with fines starting at 30,000 baht per kilo. Some anti-anxiety medicines, alprazolam among them, are treated as narcotics. If you take them, declare them following the procedure in official guidance before you fly.

Solo itineraries

7 days

First trip: Bangkok and the north

  1. Bangkok
  2. Chiang Mai

14 days

Two weeks, ending on a beach

  1. Bangkok
  2. Chiang Mai
  3. Phuket

The same start with an extra night in Chiang Mai for a meditation course at Wat Suan Dok, then five days on the coast. Phuket has direct seasonal flights to Heathrow this winter. On the Andaman side, respect swimming bans: sudden currents have caused drownings close to shore.

Frequently asked questions

How long can I stay in Thailand without a visa on a British passport?

Since 15 September 2026, up to 30 days for tourism only. Land-border entries are normally limited to two a calendar year. Fill in the Thailand Digital Arrival Card online no more than three days before you land. Check the FCDO page before you book, because these rules have changed twice in two years.

Is Thailand safe for solo travellers?

The Global Peace Index 2026 ranks it 101st of 163, well below Vietnam and Italy. The FCDO's concrete warnings are drink spiking, methanol in spirits, bag-snatching from motorbikes and rental shops holding passports against claimed damage.

What is the legal situation for LGBTQ+ travellers?

Marriage equality took effect on 23 January 2025, the first in Southeast Asia. Trans and non-binary people still cannot change their legal gender, as ILGA Asia points out. The FCDO describes Thailand as generally safe for LGBT+ travellers.

Can I bring my vape?

No. Possessing or using any vape, pod or heat-not-burn device is illegal, with no exceptions for tourists. Fines usually run from 5,000 to 30,000 baht, roughly £110 to £670, and you may have to stay until your case is closed.

How do I fly there from the UK?

Thai Airways and EVA Air run a combined 21 flights a week from Heathrow to Bangkok. From 18 October 2026 Virgin Atlantic flies Heathrow to Phuket three times a week until 26 March 2027, and BA, TUI and Norse run seasonal routes from Gatwick and Manchester.

What does a day cost?

Around 1,000 baht on a dorm bed and street food, about £22. A private hostel room plus one paid activity pushes it to 2,500 baht. The cost block below shows how we built the figures.
